Bill Ayers' notoriety dates from the radical, anti-Vietnam War group he helped to start in 1969, splintering off from the activist Students for a Democratic Society. The members of the new group, the Weather Underground, favored shows of violence to further their cause. On March 6, 1970, though, three of them blew themselves up in a Greenwich Village townhouse during a bomb-making session gone badly awry. Ayers and his fellow Weathermen, as they were called, soon dropped out of sight

Barack Obama, who was born Aug. 4, 1961, was 8 years old at the time.

The Weather Underground continued setting off bombs, including one in a men's lavatory in the Capitol building in 1971 and another in a women's restroom in the Pentagon in 1972

. Nobody was killed, due to evacuation warnings the Weathermen sent out in advance.

Golden macaroons

Ingredients:

1 cup grated carrots
3/4 cup water blended with 1/2 cup chopped dates
3 teaspoons almond extract
2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
1/4 cup wholewheat flour
1/4 cup chickpea flour or soy flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions:

Grate the carrots and place in a bowl.
Chop the dates and add the water, allow this to sit for 10 minutes and then mix well, o puree.
Add the almond flavor to the date mixture and add to the carrots.
In a second bowl, put the coconut, and flours and 1/4 tsp. salt. Mix well, and then add the sweetened carrot mixture.
Mix well and allow to stand for 1o minutes.
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Form the macaroons, but make sure not to make them too large, as then the outside will be too brown, while the inside is still too moist.
A size a bit larger than a walnut is what is recommended.
Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Clad in floor-length white robes, members of The Druid Order of London marched up Primrose Hill in London’s west side to participate in the pagan celebration of the Autumn Equinox on September 22. It is the only time during the year in which there are equal amounts of daylight and dark.

Laughing and smiling, members of the Order and even a mother toting a child, ascended the hill, forming a circle at the top while conducting pagan rituals and singing. The celebration drew dozens of people who were fascinated by England’s pagan past. The ceremony was followed by a picnic in a nearby park.

Originally founded in Oxford in 1245, the group dates its first official ceremony to 1717, when the Order was established at one of the highest points in the city, Primrose Hill.

According to the website for the British Council of British Druid Orders, the group considers itself “part of the process of the rekindling, in the 21st century, of an ancient national nature religion.”

Court blocks Uighurs' release from Guantanamo

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Wednesday temporarily blocked the release of 17 Chinese Muslims held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The appeals court granted the Bush administration's emergency request for a stay of a federal judge's order that the members of the Uighur ethnic group be released into the United States at the end of this week.

He ordered that the prisoners be brought to his courtroom for a hearing Friday morning, when they would be freed and allowed to live with Uighur families in the area.

The administration immediately asked for a stay of the judge's order while it appeals the case before the U.S. appeals court.

The three-judge panel said it granted the stay only to give the appeals court more time to consider the dispute. The court ordered that briefs be filed by both sides on various dates through October 16.

What is cob?

Cob building dates back hundreds of years ago, and cob houses built over 500 years ago in Europe are still inhabited to this day.

buckets of wet clay and sand are mixed by foot (or by horse, oxen, concrete mixer, or even Bobcat excavators) and then combined with straw to produce a sticky, malleable material that can be rolled into palm-sized loaves (or “cobs”, which is where the name originated) and then laid onto a foundation and sculpted by hand to build thick and massive cob walls

The properties of cob

When cob dries, it resembles rock or concrete in its hardness. With a nice thick coat of plaster, cob can withstand significant weathering before it starts to (slowly) wear away.

Cob has better “thermal mass“, which means it is capable of capturing and storing large amounts of heat.

Larger numbers were indicated by putting a horizontal line over them, which meant to multiply the number by 1,000. Hence the V at left has a line over the top, which means 5,000. This usage is no longer current, because the largest numbers usually expressed in the Roman system are dates, as discussed above.

C stands for centum, the Latin word for 100. A centurion led 100 men. We still use this in words like "century" and "cent." The subtraction rule means 90 is written as XC. Like the X's and L's, the C's are tacked on to the beginning of numbers to indicate how many hundreds there are: CCCLXIX is 369.

D stands for 500. As you can probably guess by this time, CD means 400. So CDXLVIII is 448. (See why we switched systems?)

M is 1,000. You see a lot of Ms because Roman numerals are used a lot to indicate dates. For instance, this page was written in the year of Nova Roma's founding, 1998 CE (Common Era; Christians use AD for Anno Domini, "year of our Lord"). That year is written as MCMXCVIII. But wait! Nova Roma counts years from the founding of Rome, ab urbe condita. By that reckoning Nova Roma was founded in 2751 a.u.c. or MMDCCLI.

The Romans were active in trade and commerce, and from the time of learning to write they needed a way to indicate numbers.

Roman numerals traditionally indicate the order of rulers or ships who share the same name (i.e. Queen Elizabeth II). They are also sometimes still used in the publishing industry for copyright dates, and on cornerstones and gravestones when the owner of a building or the family of the deceased wishes to create an impression of classical dignity. The Roman numbering system also lives on in our languages, which still use Latin word roots to express numerical ideas. A few examples: unilateral, duo, quadricep, septuagenarian, decade, milliliter.

The big differences between Roman and Arabic numerals (the ones we use today) are that Romans didn't have a symbol for zero, and that numeral placement within a number can sometimes indicate subtraction rather than addition.

A brief thought: knowledge can be static, but skill is knowledge embodied in a process. If you know all the events and dates of, say, the development of quantum theory, it doesn’t imply that you have scientific skills (and vice versa, of course). A skill is a deeper understanding—knowledge specifically of how to do a process and that knowledge deep enough so that you can adapt the process to deal with unexpected obstacles or blocks. Clearly there’s an interplay between skill knowledge and static knowledge—often the static knowledge provides a foundation (and a supply closet) for skills knowledge.
