But more so, since 9/11, the patriotic fervor, which was somewhat reminiscent of McCarthyism, was so profound in American newsrooms that you had someone like Dan Rather say that if you were to criticize the White House during post-9/11, you would have been accused—it would have been like being a traitor in South Africa, a South African township, and the quote is, "and having a flaming tire of patriotism put around your neck." Now, Rather said that to the BBC. Unfortunately, he didn't say it very loudly here.

CBS News may be ready to part ways with ‘CBS Evening News’ host Katie Couric, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

CBS executives and people close to Couric say she could leave the network after the presidential inauguration early next year, well before her contract expires in 2011, the Journal reports.

Ratings for the ‘CBS Evening News’ trail rival newscasts on ABC and NBC by wide margins, despite the fanfare that accompanied Couric’s arrival to the network in June of 2006, the Journal reports.

After her earlier success as co-host of NBC's 'Today' morning show, Couric took the helm of the 'CBS Evening News' following the departure of longtime CBS anchor Dan Rather, whose reputation had been marred by the network's discredited report on President Bush's military record.

Diabetic girl dies as parents pray instead of calling for medical aid

An 11-year-old girl died from diabetes after her parents prayed for her recovery rather than calling for medical assistance.

Madeline Neumann died on Sunday in Wisconsin, from an undiagnosed but treatable ailment.

Dan Vergin, the local police chief, said she had been ill for a month, suffering symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

"She just got sicker and sicker until she was dead," he said.

Police are now preparing a report for prosecutors. However, legal action against the parents may be prevented by a Wisconsin state statute against failing to act to protect children from bodily harm.

The statute contains an exemption for what it refers to as "treatment through prayer". Mrs Neumann, whose husband is a former policeman, said they had never expected her daughter to die. She suffered from diabetic ketoacidosis, which left her with too little insulin.

Ruby Waves is a new Web application framework for Ruby, developed by Dan Yoder. On the surface, this makes it seem “Rails-like” but Waves is billing itself as a “next-generation” framework, a cutting edge Rails-inspired framework, if you will. Dan says that Waves is “not a better Rails” but the realization of an evolution of the ideas behind frameworks like Rails. For example, Waves supports request lambdas (mapping a request to a block, rather than a URL pattern to a controller and action), just-in-time resources, nested layouts, and hot-patching. Waves is also thread-safe.

On a cold day in January, Dan Stoicescu, a millionaire living in Switzerland, became the second person in the world to buy the full sequence of his own genetic code.

He is also among a relatively small group of individuals who could afford the $350,000 price tag.

Scientists have so far unraveled only a handful of complete human genomes, all financed by governments, foundations and corporations in the name of medical research. But as the cost of genome sequencing goes from stratospheric to merely very expensive, it is piquing the interest of a new clientele.

“I’d rather spend my money on my genome than a Bentley or an airplane,” said Mr. Stoicescu, 56, a biotechnology entrepreneur who retired two years ago after selling his company. He says he will check discoveries about genetic disease risk against his genome sequence daily, “like a stock portfolio.”

January 21, 2008 -- Bill Clinton showed yesterday why he made it into the book "The Art of Napping."

During an appearance at the Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem, the former president was caught nodding off.

Clinton was there during a service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while his wife was nearby at Abyssinian Baptist Church, where she was endorsed by its minister, Rev. Calvin Butts.

Clinton has had napping episodes before. Among others, he nodded off at a Mets game and at Ronald Reagan's funeral.

When he was president, he told Dan Rather, "If I can take a nap, even 15 or 20 minutes in the middle of the day, it is really invigorating to me. On the days when I'm a little short of sleep, I try to work it out so that I can sneak off and just lie down for 15 minutes, a half an hour, and it really makes all the difference in the world."

Not that what one blogger thinks matters that much, but if Huckabee gets the nomination, I'm voting Democratic.

I'll vote for the Democratic candidate, even Hillary

If we're going to have eight years of liberal rule, I'd rather the Democratic Party be governing, so at least they can take the blame.

And, quite frankly, Hillary is to the right of Huckabee on most issues

And I don't think I'm alone on this.

I'm surprised to see Ace say he'd vote for Hillary before Huckabee. The fact is, I have been thinking about this for days and reached the very same conclusion last night. And, yes, I mean it, too.

That Presidential "R" in 2008 will stand for nothing I believe in. The guy is slick but doesn't even look competent. And if Republican primary voters are that stupid, they deserve to lose next Fall.

I am done voting for Republicans who don't represent what I believe in, low taxes and small government.
