What do you do when your fiancée dumps you so close to the wedding that the flowers, food, and guests are already en-route?

"You should go ahead and have it," counseled my brother Kurt. "Your friends will be there. The wine will be there. Why let everything go to waste?"

So I did. I had a full wedding weekend with a golf tournament on Friday, a rehearsal dinner on Saturday, and even a mock wedding ceremony on Sunday. Of the 150 invited guests, 75 turned up -- my entire side of the aisle. They only thing missing was the bride.

I then decided to take Kurt on my pre-paid Costa Rican honeymoon. We canceled the champagne and roses, and promised not to carry each other over any thresholds. My head was a cyclone, as you can imagine. I was depressed, angry, confused, suspicious, and even a little bit relieved.

THE most ferocious tropical cyclones are spinning faster than ever thanks to ocean warming, with the North Atlantic and the northern Indian Ocean suffering some of the greatest increases.

James Elsner of Florida State University and colleagues used satellite data to study cyclone wind speeds between 1981 and 2006. Previous studies have looked for changes in the mean wind speed of all cyclones, but Elsner singled out the strongest cyclones - with wind speeds in the top 30 per cent.

Barring the South Pacific basin, they found that the average wind speed of these cyclones has increased by 7.8 metres per second, pushing up the average number of extreme cyclones per year from 13 to 17 (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature07234).

Speculators hunting for next victim target UK institutions

The storm sweeping the financial world crossed the Atlantic yesterday, with Halifax Bank of Scotland, the UK's largest mortgage provider, hit hard by a cyclone of speculation. Having watched a series of major US institutions previously thought invincible, such as Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and now AIG run into difficulties, traders asked "Who next?" and seized on the slightest hint of real or perceived weakness in the British banks to sell into a plummeting market.

Confidence was further undermined with the news that AIG Life had suspended withdrawals from two of its British funds yesterday, after being inundated with requests for redemptions following news that the insurer is on the verge of collapse. This is the first time during the credit crunch that retail investment funds, rather than bank deposits, have been threatened.

Farewell to Coney Island's Astroland

Depression has no place in an amusement park, but a definite pall hung over Astroland at Coney Island on Sunday, even as the screams of thrill seekers — grade-school children, metal-mouthed teenagers and nostalgic, if slightly nauseated, grownups — tore through the air.

On Thursday, the park’s owner, Carol Albert, announced that Sunday would be the last day for Astroland, the three-acre space-themed amusement park that has been a fixture on Coney Island’s Boardwalk since 1962.

Astroland’s closing would not mean the end of rides at Coney Island; the Cyclone wooden roller coaster and the Wonder Wheel, which is part of Deno’s Amusement Park, are both city landmarks and will continue to operate next year.

But part of what made Astroland unique was its accessibility, said Charles Denson, a Coney Island historian and author of the book “Coney Island Lost and Found.”

“It wasn’t Disneyland, but thank God for that,” said Mr. Denson. “It’s open to people of small means, and it always has been.”

Some people look at Coney Island and see a paradise of carefree entertainment. Others see a cesspool of gritty squalor. Few are those who gaze upon its shrieking kids, grizzled wanderers and fast-talking flimflam artists and see an opportunity for engaged political discourse.

But it was just that improbable impulse that drove the artist Steve Powers to open the new “Waterboard Thrill Ride” on West 12th Street, just off Surf Avenue, in the shadow of the Cyclone and a mere corn dog’s throw from Nathan’s.

It looks at first like any other shuttered storefront near the boardwalk: some garish lettering and a cartoonish invitation to a delight or a scam — in this case there’s SpongeBob SquarePants saying, “It don’t Gitmo better!”

Thank goodness some inventors specialize in ways to make our lives a little easier, especially around the house. Borrowing a page from Buckminster Fuller, one of his heroes, James Dyson ‘sees what needs to be done and just does it.’

In a show-and-tell format, Dyson offers a compendium of his labor-saving, ingenious designs, with side bars on business and engineering details. While Dyson has come up with washing machines, wheelbarrows and boats, the lion’s share of his presentation concerns his Dual Cyclone vacuum cleaner, which tidily eliminates several nasty aspects of ordinary vacuum cleaners: loss of suction, bag-changing and the emission of dirty air. “As a child, I remembered the screaming noise, smelling stale dust and picking things up in my hands the vacuum wouldn’t suck up.”

UN loses millions in exchange rate blunder

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The top U.N. humanitarian affairs official said on Monday the world body had suffered "significant" losses while delivering cyclone aid to Myanmar due to a distorted official exchange rate.

Earlier this month, the United Nations issued an appeal for more than $300 million in extra aid to cope with the effects of Cyclone Nargis that struck the Irrawaddy Delta region in early May, leaving around 140,000 people dead or missing.

The loss comes from a complicated system whereby the United Nations uses foreign exchange certificates with a nominal value of $1 each that are then exchanged for the local currency, the kyat, at a rate set by Myanmar's military government.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes told reporters the United Nations has lost about $10 million in currency exchanges so far as it pays for a variety of goods and services in Myanmar.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot has roughed up a younger rival storm and may consume it altogether.

The baby red spot appears to have gotten the worst of its whirlwind encounter with the ravenous super-storm that has dominated Jupiter for at least two centuries. Their tussle was captured in a recent series of images by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Scientists may be watching historical shifts in action as they learn how the giant planet's storms grow and change over decades and centuries.

The smaller storm first appeared earlier this year, but had the misfortune to get caught up in the reverse cyclone spin of the Great Red Spot. That left the baby red spot deformed and sapped of color as it spun off to the east of the greater storm. Astronomers predict that the Great Red Spot will eventually pull in and absorb the baby red spot — a possible reason why the super-storm has sustained its power for so long.
