U.S. intelligence analysts eavesdropped on personal calls between Americans overseas and their families back home and monitored the communications of workers with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations, according to two military linguists involved in U.S. surveillance programs.

Describing the allegations as "extremely disturbing," Sen. Given that the DOJ normally doesn't care much about cyber-crime, one has to wonder how the decision to allocate those resources was made.

Clip Source: harpers.org

Cyber crimes are rampant in America today. Frequently they involve theft of identity metrics used to tap the victim’s credit. As I reviewed in a recent piece for the BBC, however, the Department of Justice has allocated few resources to investigate these crimes except in very large scale and systematic cases—that is crimes in which there is a clear criminal purpose and a clear victim, and tens of millions at stake. Generally the Department has not acted in cases in which the result of the intrusion is merely to embarrass the target, for a fairly obvious reason. At best we’re only talking about a misdemeanor. The Palin email hacking case quite plainly falls into this category. So what is going on?

Tags: politics, presidential_campaign_2008, palin, internet, crime, law, news, opinion

<clipSource>http://harpers.org/archive/2008/10/hbc-90003672</clipSource>

Terence McKenna - Seeking the Stone Part 1

clipped by: Michael Black
clipper's remarks: The first part of a video of the seminar , in which Terence McKenna present his perspective on the idea of a spiritual path for all and an impending transformation of the human world . In his singularly lucid , prosaic style , McKenna presents profoundly compelling ideas that challenge our beliefs and encourage our participation in the creation of a new social reality. He champions the individual’s freedom of choice in deciding one’s own sexual and spiritual development and techniques. During the meeting she allegedly said that she didn't have to hire any blacks. Even more damning, she purportedly said that she didn't intend to hire any.

Gwen Alexander, president of the African-American Historical Society of Alaska, initially reported Palin's quip. This charge is so racially incendiary that it sounded like yet another one of the legion of Palin urban legends that have fueled the cyber gossip mill from the moment Republican presidential contender John McCain put her on his ticket. The charge had to be confirmed or denied. If Governor Palin or any other public official flatly said that they had no intention to hire blacks, that would be politically unpardonable. And for a potential vice-president, it would and should be the kiss of death.

Tags: race, politics, bigotry, sarah-palin, alaska, quotes

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/election08/100219/did_sarah_palin_really_say_she_wouldn%27t_hire_blacks/</clipSource>

Claude Steiner - emotional literacy, transactional analysis, warm fuzzies and more

clipped by: Lexica

Clip Source: www.claudesteiner.com

Indeed, some anthropologists argue that human intelligence emerged as the consequence of the last major ice age, a period of enormous environmental stress demanding flexibility, foresight and creativity on the part of the small numbers of early Homo sapiens. Historically, those who have prophesied doom for human civilization have been proven wrong, time and again, by the capacity of our species to both adapt to and transform our conditions.

It is in this context that the Global Extinction Awareness System (GEAS) offers its forecast of the likely extinction of humankind within the next quarter-century.

Clip Source: ieet.org

Today is the “preview” launch for Superstruct, the massively-multiplayer forecasting game that Jamais Cascio has been working on with the Institute for the Future. Except this isn't a campaign against the website, but an ad for the website itself: it's just trolling by the site's creator, Marc Waesche, to try and generate some heat. Cynical?
