This perforator was used to perform a craniotomy

For Rumsfeld, these "unknown unknowns" represent the greatest threats facing the United States. But Rumsfeld forgot to add the crucial fourth term: the unknown knowns, things we don't know that we know-which is precisely the Freudian unconscious, the "knowledge which doesn't know itself," as the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan used to say. In many ways, these unknown knowns, the disavowed beliefs and suppositions we are not even aware of adhering to, may pose an even greater threat. Gulzar Alam's songs filled Peshawar's air not long ago, when the city was a different place with music, theater and even a bazaar for musicians and artists.

Dabgari Bazaar was famous for its artists and musicians. But the artists and musicians have gone and this whole area has been commercialized.

It is to this reality that Pushtu singer Gulzar Alam has returned to after years in self imposed exile in Balochistan -- only because the liberal Awami National Party has formed the government. (Watch)

"Then a time came in our province that culture, arts and music were banned. Tape recorders were forcibly removed from people's private cars and public transport. And there was a ban on musical functions. And that time we suffered a lot, our whole community of artists just fled the country."

For now, Gulzar keeps the music only to himself. His neighbours have asked him not to gather musicians around so the Taliban are not provoked into punishing the entire neighbourhood.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attacked Barack Obama on abortion on Saturday, saying the Democratic presidential candidate has "left behind even the middle ground on the issue of life."

Palin said she and Republican presidential candidate John McCain would be "defenders of the culture of life." She opposes abortion in all cases except where the pregnancy threatens the woman's life.

Palin said it was about time that Obama was "called" on his abortion views.

"Please, it is not negative and it's not mean-spirited to talk about his record," she said.

In the Illinois Senate, Obama opposed legislative efforts in 2001, 2002 and 2003 to give legal protections to any aborted fetus that showed signs of life. The 2003 measure was virtually identical to a bill President Bush signed into law in 2002 that unanimously passed the U.S. Senate.

Weekend Edition Sunday, October 12, 2008 · On the night of Oct. 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay college student at the University of Wyoming, ran into locals Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at a bar in Laramie, Wyo.

The men decided to rob Shepard. They drove him to the edge of town, tied him to a wooden fence and struck him 18 times in the head with a .357-caliber Magnum handgun before leaving him to die. He was found the next day and died in the hospital on Oct. 12.

First off, let me clear the field of an obvious source of what I think is rather fruitless discussion. The authors begin by summarizing three models of the evolution of religion: the evolutionary group selection scenario (religion as an adaptation for group living), the cultural by-product scenario (religion derives from the necessity of a theory of others’ mind and sensitivity to one’s reputation), and the cultural group selection scenario (where competition among social groups favors the spread of costly practices to maintain in-group cohesion).

To begin with, they debunk the oft-repeated claim that religiosity increases charitability. It turns out studies that have made that link are entirely based on self-reporting, a notoriously unreliable source of behavioral evidence

A series of “Good Samaritan” studies found that people’s actual (as opposed to self-reported) charitable behavior shows no correspondence whatsoever with the degree of religious belief

The trio of massive earthen mounds rising from the banks of north Georgia's winding Etowah River are monuments of a great prehistoric North American culture. The tallest, which stands higher than a six-story building above the surrounding grassy plain, is one of the largest structures ever built by the Mississippian societies that dominated much of the land from eastern Oklahoma to northern Florida from about A.D. 1000 to 1500. At Etowah, as at other Mississippian sites, the mounds were used for a variety of purposes: platforms for buildings, stages for ceremonial events, and cemeteries for the communities' elite.

The United States is failing to develop the math skills of both girls and boys, especially among those who could excel at the highest levels, a new study asserts, and girls who do succeed in the field are almost all immigrants or the daughters of immigrants from countries where mathematics is more highly valued.

The study suggests that while many girls have exceptional talent in math — the talent to become top math researchers, scientists and engineers — they are rarely identified in the United States. A major reason, according to the study, is that American culture does not highly value talent in math, and so discourages girls — and boys, for that matter — from excelling in the field. The study will be published Friday in Notices of the American Mathematical Society.

“We’re living in a culture that is telling girls you can’t do math — that’s telling everybody that only Asians and nerds do math,” said the study’s lead author, Janet E. Mertz,
