on
                  the baby
                  as the preliminary
  process in collapsing
the skull,
  which would
  allow subsequent extraction.

This abortion intrument's purpose was to hold the baby's head with
the spiked ends.
Once the head was held, a long thin probe was
pushed deep into the skull like a sword.
The instrument held the baby's head, so once it was cut off, it would not float around in the uterus.

This abortion instrument was used to crush
the baby's skull
                so as to
          allow the extraction.

This abortion instrument works by pushing the spike into the child's head. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns-the ones we don't know we don't know." For Rumsfeld, these "unknown unknowns" represent the greatest threats facing the United States. But Rumsfeld forgot to add the crucial fourth term: the unknown knowns, things we don't know that we know-which is precisely the Freudian unconscious, the "knowledge which doesn't know itself," as the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan used to say. In many ways, these unknown knowns, the disavowed beliefs and suppositions we are not even aware of adhering to, may pose an even greater threat. That is indeed the case with the reasons for this war.
http://lacan.com/zizek-iraq2.htm

Clip Source: lacan.com

The regime in Teheran must heed the democratic demands of the Iranian people, or lose its last claim to legitimacy

There are, however, essential principles common to every successful society, in every culture. Successful societies limit the power of the state and the power of the military-so that governments respond to the will of the people, and not the will of an elite. Here it is important to recognize the fundamental value of parents’ example and the benefits of introducing young people to children's classics in literature, to the fine arts and to uplifting music. While popular literature will always have its place in culture, the temptation to sensationalize should not be passively accepted in places of learning. Beauty, a kind of mirror of the divine, inspires and vivifies young hearts and minds, while ugliness and coarseness have a depressing impact on attitudes and behaviour.

<clipSource>http://catholiceducation.org/articles/education/ed0302.htm</clipSource>

Taliban in Pakistan persecute Pushtun Artists

clipped by: Gul Agha

Clip Source: www.ndtv.com

Gulzar Alam's songs filled Peshawar's air not long ago, when the city was a different place with music, theater and even a bazaar for musicians and artists.

Dabgari Bazaar was famous for its artists and musicians. JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attacked Barack Obama on abortion on Saturday, saying the Democratic presidential candidate has "left behind even the middle ground on the issue of life."

Palin said she and Republican presidential candidate John McCain would be "defenders of the culture of life." She opposes abortion in all cases except where the pregnancy threatens the woman's life.

Palin said it was about time that Obama was "called" on his abortion views.

"Please, it is not negative and it's not mean-spirited to talk about his record," she said.

In the Illinois Senate, Obama opposed legislative efforts in 2001, 2002 and 2003 to give legal protections to any aborted fetus that showed signs of life. The 2003 measure was virtually identical to a bill President Bush signed into law in 2002 that unanimously passed the U.S. Senate.

<clipSource>http://apnews.myway.com/article/20081011/D93OGKAG0.html</clipSource>

An American Tragedy

clipped by: musex64
clipper's remarks: I still remember this event. But it also had a profound effect on the journalists assigned to the story: The brutality of the crime haunts many of them to this day,.

Tags: violence, homophobia, gay, news

<clipSource>http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95553578</clipSource>

The Cultural Evolution Of Religion

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.scientificblogging.com

First off, let me clear the field of an obvious source of what I think is rather fruitless discussion. The authors begin by summarizing three models of the evolution of religion: the evolutionary group selection scenario (religion as an adaptation for group living), the cultural by-product scenario (religion derives from the necessity of a theory of others’ mind and sensitivity to one’s reputation), and the cultural group selection scenario (where competition among social groups favors the spread of costly practices to maintain in-group cohesion).

To begin with, they debunk the oft-repeated claim that religiosity increases charitability. It turns out studies that have made that link are entirely based on self-reporting, a notoriously unreliable source of behavioral evidence

A series of “Good Samaritan” studies found that people’s actual (as opposed to self-reported) charitable behavior shows no correspondence whatsoever with the degree of religious belief

Tags: culture, <a monuments of a great prehistoric North American culture. The tallest, which stands higher than a six-story building above the surrounding grassy plain, is one of the largest structures ever built by the Mississippian societies that dominated much of the land from eastern Oklahoma to northern Florida from about A.D. 1000 to 1500. At Etowah, as at other Mississippian sites, the mounds were used for a variety of purposes: platforms for buildings, stages for ceremonial events, and cemeteries for the communities' elite.

<clipSource>http://www.archaeology.org/0811/abstracts/etowah.html</clipSource>

Math Skills Suffer in U.S., Study Finds

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: The students with the motivation to improve themselves are usually too poor to stay at school, those who can stay have to cope with peer pressure and the children of the rich aim to be celebrities. A major reason, according to the study, is that American culture does not highly value talent in math, and so discourages girls — and boys, for that matter — from excelling in the field. The study will be published Friday in Notices of the American Mathematical Society.

“We’re living in a culture that is telling girls you can’t do math — that’s telling everybody that only Asians and nerds do math,” said the study’s lead author, Janet E. Mertz,

For social reasons they’re not even trying.”

Tags: education

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/10/education/10math.html?_r=1&oref=slogin</clipSource>

Deathways Open Doors To Unexpected Cultural Practices

clipped by: wiccantexan

Clip Source: www.buffalo.edu

UB historian studies death in the New World

Cremation, "air burial," grave cairns, funeral mounds, mummification, belief in life after death -- death practices sacred to one culture are often considered "odd" or even terrifying by another.

In every social group throughout history, the disposal of the dead has special significance, and ways of death always fascinate those on the outside looking in,

"Beyond that," he says, "deathways illuminate religious meaning and the social life of cultures about which we may know little else."

"Much of my research looks at how deathways marked cultural self-definition and the definition of 'other' in the New World," he says.

In fact, Seeman says the examination of deathways is virtually unmatched for understanding cross-cultural encounters that took place centuries ago in the New World.

The book also takes a particular interest in how deathways document the cultural syncretism that, over time, reconciled a vast number of disparate or contradictory beliefs,

Tags: death, history, culture, social, belief

<clipSource>http://www.buffalo.edu/news/9688</clipSource>
