Handler never gave up on lost army dog

The handler of an army-trained labrador that went missing for more than a year says he never gave up hope for the lost dog.

The black Labrador called Sabi went missing in action in southern Afghanistan, during the battle in which the SAS trooper Mark Donaldson won the Victoria Cross.

Now Sabi has been reunited with her Australian unit. The Australian Defence Force says an American soldier spotted the dog last week.

The 10-year-old female was trained to detect explosives like the roadside bombs used extensively by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was the dog's second tour of duty.

Soldier spots dog

He says the dog was recovered by a US soldier who can only be identified as John. The soldier was aware the Australians were missing an explosive detector dog.

He says the soldier reportedly gave it some commands it understood.

"When she did come back we were all overjoyed with what happened," he said.

CONCERNS that canola may become contaminated with the genetically modified (GM) variety are falling on deaf ears, a non-GM farmers group says

The Network of Concerned Farmers says it's worried that non-GM canola being stored alongside GM varieties in silos in Victoria, NSW and Western Australia will be at risk of contamination

Victorian non-GM grower Geoffrey Carracher said he was recently advised of a three-day delay in the delivery of non-GM canola to a silo run by his storage handler Graincorp while grain at the site was being tested for cross-contamination

told AAP he has raised his concerns with Graincorp over reports of GM price penalties of $15 per tonne, the inability to meet contract provisions, liability for accidental contamination and legal recourse

But the grain handler says his concerns should be forwarded to Monsanto or the Australian Oilseeds Federation

Family stunned after M61 death

TRAGEDY: Ian Wilkinson

This is the Wigan man who died in an horrific accident after his car broke down on the motorway.

It is thought Ian Wilkinson, 39, from Hindley, was attempting to cross the southbound carriageway of the M61 early on Sunday morning when he was struck by a heavy goods vehicle.

Lancashire police have confirmed his car had broken down and was found on the hard shoulder further down the motorway.

It said: "Ian was a fantastic and loving father. He was loved by his mother Olive, father Lawrence, brothers Stephen, Adrian and David and partner Nicola. This was such an unexpected tragedy that has left all that knew him stunned.

"Ian served the public working for the NHS and will be sorely missed by his family and many close friends."

Recent research published in the journal Brain and Cognition finds that people can boost the number and quality of their original ideas when they increase the interaction between the brain's right and left hemispheres.

Sixty-two subjects performed a creativity task, where they had to come up with as many alternate uses for common objects like, a paper clip, pencil, shoe, etc. as they could in one minute.

After this initial task researchers asked subjects to move their eyes to follow a target as it moved horizontally left to right for 30 seconds. This exercise is thought to increase the cross-talk between the hemispheres.

Then the subjects completed the creative task again. Results were surprising. Subjects came up with significantly more unique uses for the everyday items, than the control group who stared straight ahead.

So when brainstorming ideas

try bilateral eye movement which, in the words of science, increases your inter-hemispheric interaction, and in turn increases your options.

This is a video of Roomba Pac-Man in action. A few clarifications:

The red tape on the floor is simply so the user can visualize the map in the real world. The robots are unaware of the tape, and are rather constrained by a virtual boundary embedded in their programming.

The "dots" on the floor are pieces of paper the the Pac-Man Roomba must vacuum up to complete the map.

The ghosts actually autonomously search for Pac-Man, and when they get close enough to "sense" Pac-Man, chase him according to a set of probabalistic rules.

The human controller cannot force the Pac-Man to cross any boundaries, it will only allow inputs in valid directions.

Obama's Unnecessary War

Before it became his cross to bear, President Barack Obama redefined the war in Afghanistan as a war of necessity. In contrast, he also preemptively labeled the other, less popular war which was grandfathered into his term as a war of choice.

Presumably, a war of necessity confronts us with an imperative that leaves no reasonable option but to engage. To wit, the war in Afghanistan against Al Qaeda and The Taliban is a conflict in which we must be engaged. By contrast, Iraq is a war that we really do not need to be engaged in, which suggests that as a free nation, we were once afforded the opportunity to weigh our options on whether or not we should commit to this struggle.

An Indian team game, Kabaddi calls itself a cross between tag and wrestling.

Two teams of 12 (seven playing, five in reserve) face each other on a court just over half the size of a basketball court. One team sends a raider into the opponents territory, who must not draw breath whilst he is there (laws dictate the raider must constantly chant 'Kabaddi,' thus eliminating any "hey, I saw you breathe!", "No, my mouth is closed!", "You breathed through your nose, I saw you!" arguments).

The raider' job is to 'tag' his opponents and get out without being caught. Tagged opponents are out, but if the raider is wrestled to the ground until he draws breath, then he is out the game. Traditional garb for teams is socks and boxer shorts, or sometimes briefs.

No one quite knows when Kabaddi started, though Indians claim they have concrete evidence the game was played 4,000 years ago, presumably in the form of primitive drawings of men chasing each other in their underpants.
