Anger ... 250 inmates at Belmarsh get special treatment

PRISON bosses sparked fury yesterday after splashing out �25,000 to buy lunch boxes for Muslim terrorists and criminals.

The containers were handed out to nearly 250 inmates to keep their dinners warm in their cells during the Muslim festival of Ramadan.

The bright yellow metal flasks were issued to all Muslim prisoners in London’s top-security Belmarsh Jail — which houses scores of convicted and suspected terrorists.

They include hook-handed cleric Abu Hamza, 48, serving seven years for incitement to murder and racial hatred.

Prison officers at Belmarsh last night branded the decision �absolutely crazy�.

The boxes allow prisoners to keep meals warm until darkness when they are allowed to eat at the end of the fasting period during Ramadan, which began on Monday.

�It’s madness to allow dangerous prisoners to have a metal box with handles. These are not petty criminals — these are hardened terrorists.

Lobbyist Abramoff gets four years in prison

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, whose corruption scandal shook up Washington's power elite and contributed to the Republican loss of control in Congress, was sentenced on Thursday to four years in federal prison.

Abramoff is already serving a nearly six-year term on unrelated charges and the new sentence will be served at the same time, meaning he will not spend any extra time behind bars once his original sentence ends in 2012.

"I've fallen into an abyss, your honor, and I don't quite know how to get out," he said.

Several members of Indian tribes victimized by Abramoff urged the judge to give him the maximum sentence, but one tribal member spoke in his defense. Huvelle said because Abramoff cooperated with authorities on other criminal investigations, his sentence was significantly reduced from what guidelines suggested.

Mexico suspects ties to 'saint of death' cult that's popular with criminals

MEXICO CITY - The heads of 11 decapitated bodies discovered in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula last week may have been burned in a ritual, investigators said.

Police said they found an altar to the skeletal figure of the "Santa Muerte," an unofficial patron saint of death, in the home of two men arrested in connection with the slayings, while several scorched spots were discovered in a nearby clearing.

Police suspect the heads were burned in the clearing, according to a statement from the Public Safety Department. The department did not say what evidence it had to support that theory. Public Safety officials declined to give further details Monday, citing an ongoing investigation.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on a book tour in which she is being hounded by activists and questioned about her declaration that “impeachment is off the table.” She responded on the TV talk show “The View,” “If somebody had a crime that the president had committed, that would be a different story.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind may have provided the evidence she doesn’t want to see. Suskind has just published a book called “The Way of the World.” He makes an explosive charge: that the Bush administration instructed the CIA to forge a letter that would support its claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and was linked to al-Qaida. He also charged that the person whose name is on the forged letter, the former head of Iraqi intelligence, the man who was the jack of diamonds in the U.S. military’s “most wanted” deck of cards, Tahir Jalil Habbush, was given $5 million in hush money.

Hi-tech fraud gangs plan to exploit the US’s slow uptake of chip and pin technology by using cloned credit cards to fund wide scale shopping sprees here in the UK.

One gang, exposed by a BBC investigation, are said to have accessed the bank account and credit card details of over 2300 Americans in a single month and were planning to clone these onto fake ‘signature only’ cards to use overseas.

According to the BBC these details were acquired from other US based gangs who had managed to tap the phone lines between a number of banks and cash machines, suggesting that more scams of this nature are likely in the near future.

The Santa Muerte is one of several unofficial folk saints worshipped in Mexico. The cult has become popular among criminals in Mexico who appeal to the "saint" — not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church — to stay safe and out of jail. Law-abiding worshippers simply seek favors or intercession.

Proposals to monitor all our communications are an intolerable assault on liberty in the name of security

In the Queen's speech this autumn Gordon Brown's government will announce a scheme to institute a database of every telephone call, email, and act of online usage by every resident of the UK. It will propose that this information will be gathered, stored, and "made accessible" to the security and law enforcement agencies, local councils, and "other public bodies".

Two things have made this ghastly development possible: the technology, and politicians.

The technology is way ahead of the game: Siemens of Germany are already supplying 60 countries with a device that monitors and integrates data from phone, email and internet activity;

The second point concerns the quality of our politicians. They say they are putting us all under suspicion for our own good. They wish to protect us against terrorists and criminals, and to make bureaucracy more efficient.

The only two cents I'd add is that a real story — and one that should alarm people — is that this is what Obama thinks the Justice Department is for. Here is a guy who fought the Patriot Act, fought surveillance reform, has spoken admiringly of Ayer's radical views of the criminal justice system, and has a record as a Chicago legislator of being soft on violent crime. He is evidently ambivalent about going after terrorists and hardened criminals, but he wants to mobilize the Justice Department post haste to suppress political speech that he doesn't like.

Ex-Youth Justice Board chairman Prof Rod Morgan criticised an "extensive net widening" of the use of summary powers such as cautions and on-the-spot fines.

Shadow home secretary Dominic Grieve accused the government of "pursuing easy targets instead of going after the real criminals".

"Not only are serious offenders escaping real justice due to the reliance on spot-fines but, as this report shows, many people who should be dealt with informally are being criminalised," he said.

To catch a thief

Theft of any kind is pretty despicable, but to take from those who often have so little, those who in their daily commuting or errand-running inflict so little burden on the rest of us — there must be a special circle of hell reserved for such scum.

Well, if there is, there’s a place of dishonour in it reserved for Igor Kenk. Among the cycling community, he’s long been notorious for rumours that he buys and sells stolen bikes out of his Queen West shop. Now we all know just how well deserved that notoriety likely was, after he was arrested by Toronto police this week and charged with theft. In his shop, and in several storage locations around the city, it appears he may have had more than 2,000 stolen bikes in his possession. The charges he faces indicate that his operation was a driving force behind Toronto’s reputation as the bike-theft capital of North America.
