There is a fashion these days for apologies: not apologies for the things that one has actually done oneself (that kind of apology is as difficult to make and as unfashionable as ever), but for public apologies by politicians for the crimes and misdemeanours of their ancestors, or at least of their predecessors. I think it is reasonable to call this pattern of political breast-beating the False Apology Syndrome.

What is this all about, and what does it signify? Does it mean that at long last the powerful are making a genuine effort to see things from the point of view of the weak, or is it, on the contrary, a form of moral exhibitionism that subverts genuine moral thought and conduct?

apologies for distant events, however important or pregnant with consequences those events may have been, are another matter entirely. They have bad effects on both those who give them and those who receive them.

Abortion reform clears last hurdle

ABORTION has been legalised in Victoria.

Just after 10.30 last night, a historic vote in State Parliament gave women the right to choose to have an abortion free from the threat of criminal prosecution.

The conscience vote of upper house MPs prompted tears of joy from veteran pro-choice campaigners, including Jo Wainer, in the public gallery.

Former Labor premier Joan Kirner hailed the vote as a victory for women after a 35-year campaign to take abortion out of the Crimes Act.

But the 23 to 17 vote for decriminalisation was also greeted with cries of "You've got blood on your hands" from anti-abortion protesters.

Four pro-life activists were forcibly evicted from the public gallery amid angry and emotional scenes. They condemned the vote as a green light for "state-sanctioned baby killing" and vowed to continue their vocal campaign.

Last night's conscience vote ended a marathon parliamentary debate that split the major parties.

Of the 331 arrested yesterday, 11 (2 females, 9 males), including one plant supervisor, face criminal charges for various crimes including re-entry after deportation, aggravated identity theft, counterfeit documents and false statements. All have been transferred into the U.S. Marshal's custody.

All of those administratively arrested have been interviewed, fingerprinted, and photographed by ICE agents and processed for removal from the United States. The females arrested were transferred to the Atlanta City Detention Center in Atlanta, Georgia and the males were transferred to the Stuart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia.

According to the most up to date estimates available from the National Right to Life, there were 1,287,000 abortions performed in the United States in 2004.

I personally found this number to be appalling, especially considering that three-quarters of women who had aborted a fetus stated that the reason they were getting an abortion was because they could not afford a child. This means that money, the lack of financial security, is the reason for 75% of all abortions performed in the United States. For 2004, that’s equivalent to 965,250 lives being extinguished for fear of poverty.

The solution is simple, instead of giving $700 billion to rich bankers for their crimes, we could provide financial assistance to all expecting mothers.

I hope that all those Pro-lifers and Conservatives who think voting into office the same people who are robbing the nation and causing all these abortions get to see these numbers.

McCain Palin Inciting Racist Hate Crimes Against Obama & Supporters

That's all the McCain campaign has left. After falling so far behind in the polls their odds of winning in November seem to have dried up right before their very eyes, John McCain and Sarah Palin have turned to inciting their crowds in a fervor of hate, foaming at the mouth while spitting out lies about their opponents.

In speeches on Monday and Tuesday, McCain and Palin did not stop to correct or reprimand supporters who yelled out, "Terrorist!" "Treason!" and "Kill Him!" directed at Obama. Instead McCain and Palin laughed, and continued their hate filled neo-Nazi messages.

It's already working to harm Obama supporters. A man wearing an Obama t-shirt was shot in the face three times by a white man yelling, "I f-ing hate n-'s."

All they have left is Fear. Hate. Racism.

They had Stupidity all along.

Given that the DOJ normally doesn't care much about cyber-crime, one has to wonder how the decision to allocate those resources was made.

Cyber crimes are rampant in America today. Frequently they involve theft of identity metrics used to tap the victim’s credit. As I reviewed in a recent piece for the BBC, however, the Department of Justice has allocated few resources to investigate these crimes except in very large scale and systematic cases—that is crimes in which there is a clear criminal purpose and a clear victim, and tens of millions at stake. Generally the Department has not acted in cases in which the result of the intrusion is merely to embarrass the target, for a fairly obvious reason. At best we’re only talking about a misdemeanor. The Palin email hacking case quite plainly falls into this category. So what is going on?

McCain's Double Standard

Gordon Liddy.

Both Ayers and Liddy say they have no regrets for what they did. Both served prison terms for their actions.

Liddy, a radio talk show host, gives the advice: "if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot, they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. Kill the sons of bitches."

Ayers, since imprisonment, has spent his time helping the poor and disadvantaged.

McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

Can a presidential candidate justify a long and friendly relationship with someone who, back in the 1970s, extolled violence and committed crimes in the name of a radical ideology -- and who has never shown remorse or admitted error? When the candidate in question is Barack Obama, John McCain says no. But when the candidate in question is John McCain, he's not so sure.

Obama has been justly criticized for his ties to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers, who in 1995 hosted a campaign event for Obama and in 2001 gave him a $200 contribution.

McCain minced no words: "I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people."

What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers -- in the form of G. Gordon Liddy.

Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be

It is a sorry fact of American political life that campaigns get ugly, often in their final weeks. But Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin have been running one of the most appalling campaigns we can remember.

They have gone far beyond the usual fare of quotes taken out of context and distortions of an opponent’s record — into the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia. Senator Barack Obama has taken some cheap shots at Mr. McCain, but there is no comparison.

Ms. Palin, in particular, revels in the attack. Her campaign rallies have become spectacles of anger and insult.

Her demagoguery has elicited some frightening, intolerable responses. A recent Washington Post report said at a rally in Florida this week a man yelled “kill him!” as Ms. Palin delivered that line and others shouted epithets at an African-American member of a TV crew.

There were real heroes in Vietnam but he wasn't one of them. And despite Vietnam being another undeclared war built on lies a soldier is suppose to be loyal and not give aid to the enemy.

At least the smear, above, is based on truth; and we can't lose this election because Republican throw more *hit.

Judge orders Chinese Muslims at Guantanamo freed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal judge on Tuesday, in a rebuke to the Bush administration, ordered the release in the United States of 17 Chinese Muslims who have been held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The judge said there was no evidence the detainees, who have been held at Guantanamo for nearly seven years, were "enemy combatants" or a security risk, and that the U.S. Constitution prohibits indefinite detention without cause. He ordered them brought to the court for a hearing on Friday.

The Uighurs had been living in a camp in Afghanistan during the U.S.-led bombing campaign that began in October 2001. They fled into the mountains and were detained by Pakistani authorities, who handed them over to the United States.

The Uighurs remain at the prison even though the U.S. military no longer considers them "enemy combatants."
