Advent calendars have been a holiday tradition for centuries, and over that time countless versions have come and gone. While the more common variety is the rectangular shape with small, paper windows for chocolates, there are more creative renditions to consider, such as the walnut shell idea presented here. Besides the high level of creativity this one requires (teeny, tiny gifts only!), the best part of this Advent calendar is that it's green; you're not buying anything new. (Well, you might have to make a trip to the store for the walnuts — organic, of course.) Scrounge around the house long enough and you'll find almost everything you need to get started and have fun with this holiday project. (Text: Ashley Chase/MNN)

DIY walnut treasure chest

Walnut Treasure Chest

You will need:

a walnut
3/8" - 1/2" brass fittings (from the miniature dept of a craft or hobby store)
small drill
small estucheon pins
epoxy glue
small pieces of velour

Clean and smooth the inside of a perfectly split walnut. Holding the 2 halves securely together, use a small rasp or grinder to somewhat smooth and flatten a small patch on both "long" sides of the shell. this will help you to position the hinge and latch.

Hold the hinge in position against the shell and mark the holes. Drill a tiny hole at each mark. Reposition the hinge, lining up the fastening holes and secure with a little epoxy glue - be very careful not to get glue into the hinge itself.

Repeat the process for the latch on the other side.

Tap a small estucheon pin through the holes and bend over the excess on the inside of the box and secure with a dab of epoxy glue.

Cut two pieces of velour in a circle, a bit larger than the rim of the nutshell.

Secure them into the walnut halves with a little glue

Thankfulness Tree

clipper's remarks: This is the second year we have had a Thankfulness Tree. I have some fake branches that I put in a big vase to hold the leaves. I went to a scrapbooking store and used their die cut machine to make many many leaves from paper. If you buy the paper there, you can use the machines for free.

I punched holes in the leaves to hang on the branches without having to mess with string or glue or hangers of any sort.

I place the leaves in a bowl with a pen so any guests that come during November can write something they are thankful for on a leaf and hang it up.

On Thanksgiving we read the leaves and we give thanks for all the friends and family that have come to our house. Then I put the leaves in a bag and date it so we can read them in future years too.

Yesterday, my daughter wrote that she was thankful for "being born" and for "being in this family." I am so thankful for those things too.

Go, get your thankfulness on!

Fill a flowerpot with sand and set in a shapely bare tree branch.

Next, cut a pile of leaf shapes from colored craft foam.

As your guests arrive, have them take a leaf and, with a permanent marker, write their name and the date on one side and something they're grateful for on the other.

To decorate your tree, push a large ornament hanger or straightened paper clip through the stem of each leaf and hang it in place.

I have this friend who’s always making fun of my affinity for what he calls “19th century entertainment.” For him, parades, fireworks, and festivals are a relic of a time when people didn’t have the internet, cable TV, or Wiis to entertain them. I think that’s sad.

I love parades. I love fireworks. And, OMG, do I love festivals.

Oakland has a fair number of festivals. But the Dia De Los Muertos festival in Fruitvale is easily one of my favorites all year.

They’ve got rides for the kids, and they’re got all this music, and of course great food everywhere, and while I’m personally not all that big on crafts, well, they’ve got tons of those too.

But what sets this one apart from like every other festival in Oakland for me (besides the size, of course) is the color.

The sounds, the smells, and, the colors, oh, the colors, just make for such a rich sensory experience. If you haven’t been before, you just have to go on Sunday.
