With huge budget gaps, increasing unemployment, and extreme foreclosure rates, nine additional states are joining California in the crippling budget deficit club.

According to a report from the Pew Center, nine more states — Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin – are now facing financial problems that are likely to result in higher taxes as well as fewer government jobs and services.

California, which is on track to run an estimated deficit of over $12 billion, is still the worst off. However, the combined economic output and population of all ten states make up more than a third of the US. How they manage their budgetary crises provides useful insight into the whole nation’s poor economic outlook going forward.

If you look at the Baucus framework, which was the basis of the Senate bill—it’s on the Senate Finance Committee website. Just right-click on that document, and it turns out the author of the document was Elizabeth Fowler, who’s a former vice president of Wellpoint, the nation’s largest private insurance company, covering 35 million people. So the private insurance industry has hijacked the process. What’s come out of the House, what’s likely to come out of the Senate, is a completely inadequate bill that takes about $500 billion in taxpayer money and hands it over to the private health insurance industry.

I believe much of the opposition means well, deep down inside, and they would just as soon see all citizens provided with reasonable health care. For policymakers, as well as those who feel the need to understand, it is important to learn enough so as to balance a sense of empathy and caring with a knowledge that self-sufficiency and motivation are robbed and diminished every time we just submit to the government and let them say, "Come to papa." Of course, it's the intuitive part that lets one know that those are even factors important to investigate, I do believe.

As someone crawling out of years of ignoring what goes on around me (or, I guess you could say, ignorance) I pretty much am forced to try to learn each new topic from the ground up. At least when it comes to technical matters. Now on the intuitive level, I think I even gain from a lack of certain preconceived perceptions. Things like body language, human behavior, and a fairly accurate B.S. detector. This health care thing is a multi-headed beast, on multiple layers and levels. (Not to mention the multi-headed beasts which are the personalities involved.) It is entangled with, and must involve, your sense of values toward your fellow man, and it requires thought surrounding fundamental American ideas. I think it is likely that much of the most strident resistance is rooted in a valid sense that those in power are not just seeking a progress that progresses the American way, but one that is Post-American Progressive as a brand.

WASHINGTON — The number of US veterans who died in 2008 because they lacked health insurance was 14 times higher than the US military death toll in Afghanistan that year, according to a new study.

The analysis produced by two Harvard medical researchers estimates that 2,266 US military veterans under the age of 65 died in 2008 because they lacked health coverage and had reduced access to medical care.

That figure is more than 14 times higher than the 155 US troop deaths in Afghanistan in 2008, the study says.

Released as the United States commemorates fallen soldiers on Veterans Day, the study warns that even health care provided by the Veterans Health Administration (VA) leaves many veterans without coverage.

More than 2,200 veterans under the age of 65 died last year due to lack of health insurance, according to a study out of Harvard Medical School released today. This number - 2,266 in one year - is more than 14 times the number of US troops who died in Afghanistan in 2008.

The researchers also found that, in 2008, 1,461,615 veterans between the ages of 18 and 64 lacked insurance.

Steffie Woolhandler, one of the study's authors, pointed out that most uninsured veterans fall into a common coverage gap: they aren't poor enough to qualify for Medicaid or special VA benefits, but earn too little to pay for health care on their own.

Many veterans cannot receive care from the VA, even if they've been through combat, according to Woolhandler. Generally, VA facilities only treat medical problems or disabilities specifically acquired during military service.

Although most vets get medical care through the VA, there are about a million and a half, under 65, who were not wounded and are "too poor to afford private coverage but not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid or means-tested VA care," one professor says.

Being uninsured ups your odds of dying by 40%, the researchers note. Hence the result: "Six preventable deaths a day," says a study co-author. "On this Veterans Day we should not only honor the nearly 500 soldiers who have died this year in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also the more than 2,200 veterans who were killed by our broken health insurance system," the associate professor says, according to ThinkProgress.

The health care bill just passed by the House has a surprise for younger Americans who may want to avoid the expense of extensive health coverage, either buy the Democrat version of insurance or go to jail for 5 years.

A letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) obtained by the office of Republican House member Dave Camp confirmed that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962, as amended) could land you behind bars.

The letter says that citizens don’t have “acceptable health insurance coverage” and who choose not to pay the individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), can be slapped with civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 five years in jail.

Over the past decade, the AARP has morphed from an advocacy group to an insurance company (through its subsidiary company). It is one of the main suppliers of Medi-gap insurance, a high-cost, privately purchased coverage that picks up where Medicare leaves off. But President Bush-43 passed the Medicare Advantage program, which offered a subsidized, lower-cost alternative to Medi-gap. Under Medicare Advantage, the elderly get all the extra coverage they need plus coordinated, well-managed care, usually by the same physician. So more than 10 million seniors went with Medicare Advantage, cutting into AARP Medi-gap revenues.

Presto! Obama solved their problem. He eliminates subsidies for Medicare Advantage. The elderly will have to pay more for coverage under Medigap, but the AARP — which supposedly represents them — will make more money

As the suicidal Democratic congressmen proceed to rubber-stamp the Obama healthcare reform despite the drubbing their party took in the ’09 elections, the president trotted out the endorsements of the AMA and the AARP to stimulate support. But these — and the other endorsements — his package has received are all bought and paid for. Here are the deals:

· The American Medical Association (AMA) was facing a 21 percent cut in physicians’ reimbursements under the current law. Obama promised to kill the cut if they backed his bill. The cuts are the fruit of a law requiring annual 5-6 percent reductions in doctor reimbursements for treating Medicare patients. Bravely, each year Congress has rolled the cuts over, suspending them but not repealing them. So each year, the accumulated cuts threaten doctors. By now, they have risen to 21 percent. With this blackmail leverage, Obama compelled the AMA to support his bill … or else!
