Town buys strip club to shut it down

LAVONIA, Ga. -- The town of Lavonia shelled out nearly $1 million to buy and shut down Cafe Risque, a strip club along Interstate 85.

"We bought it to get rid of it, bottom line," city manager Gary Fesperman told CBS 46 Thursday afternoon.

After the purchase, which Fesperman said was finalized Tuesday morning, the city burned the interstate signs advertising the club, which was popular with truckers.

"What was such a blight was those billboards," said Fesperman. "Those billboards did more damage to the community than the club did."

The city went to court several times to close the club but was never successful. Festerman said the club survived because it was grandfathered in under the laws on the books at the time.

"If the ownership changed, the grandfather clause would go away, and that's what happened," Fesperman said.

Sullivan died in his sleep in 2006 at age 47, but the city was not able to buy the club until this year.

The city now has a ban on adult-oriented businesses.

A sexual assault that leaves a victim pregnant may be punished more severely than one that does not result in pregnancy, the California Supreme Court ruled unanimously Thursday.

The state high court said a pregnancy may be considered "great bodily injury."

Justice Carol A. Corrigan and Chief Justice Ronald M. George said the ruling should apply to all pregnancies that result from sexual assaults.

"A victim who is raped and made pregnant experiences a different degree of injury than the victim who is not impregnated," Corrigan wrote. "Because pregnancy must result in childbirth, miscarriage or abortion, its infliction during a sexual assault is, by definition, a substantial or significant injury."

Garmin GPS units, similar to this one shown Wednesday night, Aug. 27, 2008 in Tampa, Fla., can be used in court cases to pinpoint for jurors the places defendants have been.

Prosecutors in suburban Chicago analyzed data from the Garmin GPS device to pinpoint where Hanson had been on the morning after his parents were fatally shot and his sister and brother-in-law bludgeoned to death in 2005. He was convicted of the killings earlier this year and sentenced to death.

Hanson's trial was among recent criminal cases around the country in which authorities used GPS navigation devices to help establish a defendant's whereabouts. Experts say such evidence will almost certainly become more common in court as GPS systems become more affordable and show up in more vehicles.

But the growing popularity of GPS systems - in cars, cell phones and other handheld devices - gives authorities another powerful tool to track suspects.

Codex Manesse may well be the quintessential medieval manuscript. The parade of miniatures - gallant knights and comely maidens, chess, backgammon and falconry, jousting tournaments and heraldry, castles and court musicians - feature the types of (near) cliché imagery we all immediately identify with the period.

The manuscript was compiled in the early 1300s at the request of the Manesse family in an attempt to record the major figures of the minnesang - the German tradition of composing and performing love songs, similar to the provincial troubadours of France.

The 137 manuscript illustrations depict 12th and 13th century poets

in scenes reflective of their names or themes from their songs. They mostly came from the nobility - Dukes, Kings and Counts - but sometimes the minnesang included educated members of the middle and lower classes.

The complete manuscript - 'Cod. Pal. germ. 848 Große Heidelberger Liederhandschrift (Codex Manesse)' - is available from the University of Heidelberg.

Nintendo faces legal action over Wii console

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Nintendo's hit Wii console, with its wandlike remote controller, has been targeted in patent infringement complaints by a U.S. technology company.

Hillcrest Laboratories, based in Rockville, Maryland, has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington and a patent infringement lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Maryland against Nintendo Corp., the company said in a statement Wednesday.

Hillcrest is accusing Nintendo of infringement in four patents dealing with technology for a handheld three-dimensional pointing device and a display interface system for organizing graphic content on a TV, it said.

"While Hillcrest Labs has a great deal of respect for Nintendo and the Wii, Hillcrest Labs believes that Nintendo is in clear violation of its patents and has taken this action to protect its intellectual property rights," it said.

Legal cases mount up over schoolyard injuries

CHILDREN are suing schools for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for injuries caused while playing games such as tiggy.

Nearly 100 lawsuits were filed against the State of Queensland for injuries suffered by schoolchildren in the last financial year.

One child is asking the court to award her $280,000 plus interest after she hurt herself playing tiggy (chase) in the schoolyard when she was six.

Another launched a lawsuit last month claiming more than $136,000 for an injury she says she suffered while high jumping during a Sunshine Coast school carnival.

The revelation that schoolyards are becoming fertile ground for litigation follows public outcry over the banning of cartwheels, handstands and somersaults at a north Queensland school and admissions by Education Minister Rod Welford that fear of legal action was partly behind the decision.

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme Court justices - 545 human beings out of the 300 million - are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the
domestic problems that plague this country.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not
replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts - of
incompetence and irresponsibility.

I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable
directly to those 545 people.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

A majority of California voters oppose a ballot initiative to ban gay marriage, though they are evenly split on the practice itself, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The ballot question essentially will ask voters to prohibit the practice of same-sex marriage, which was approved this year by the California Supreme Court.

A majority of likely voters, 54 percent, oppose ending gay marriage, compared with 40 percent who support it, the poll said. The result is similar to the findings of a Field Poll in July, which found that 51 percent of likely California voters opposed ending gay marriage, while 42 percent said they supported it.
