Victorian Hand-Colored Motion Picture

The Lumière brothers were pioneers of moving pictures. They started their careers working in their father’s photographic firm and would go on to make the advances that eventually lead to the beginning of the motion picture era. Their Cinematographe – a motion picture camera and projector – would be the invention that brought moving pictures to the masses.

The above video is one of the earliest examples of colored moving pictures. There is some question about its exact date; it has been put at 1896, 1899 and 1913. Every frame had to be colored by hand, and the result is stunning. The film features Loie Fuller, a dancer who performed her “Serpentine Dance” with billowing costumes and colored lights to create the effect that is re-created in the short film from the Lumière brothers.

In addition to creating badass awesome costumes, the parents of these junior Spartans of Thermopylae were resourceful as hell. Example: their shields were made out of the lids from formula containers. We love that the rest of the ingredients for this awesome costume (2 babies; 1/2 yard of red cloth; 1/2 yard of brown cloth; 2 pairs of boots; aluminum foil; cardboard; 4 scrunchies; tape) cost less than $10. This ... is ... crafty!

Ukrainian News Agency "Fraza" reported that, according to informed sources, "it has been confirmed 100 % Pneumonic Plague in Ukraine".

It is also required to distribute masks at health facilities with 8 levels of protection and anti-plague protection costumes. There is also an informal order not to allow any visitors to see the patients.

According to the "Fraza" agency, "today in Ukraine pneumonic plague is going in parallel with swine flu. The plague has killed over 60 people, and about 14 from the flu.

Lamenting the Decline of Bonfire Night

As you might have guessed, if you are a regular reader of Fancy Dress UK, I simply adore dressing up in fancy dress costumes.

Therefore, you may have assumed that I would be extremely pleased with the fact that Halloween has simply exploded in this country in recent years

Well, yes and no!

I was somewhat saddened to hear the news that this rapid rise in popularity has come at a price – for it seems that with the rise of Halloween has come the decline of that other great autumnal festival, Bonfire Night.

And that is a real shame. Unlike many European countries, Britain does not have too many traditions left that are peculiar only to us – Bonfire Night is one of the few. It celebrates the foiling of perhaps the most infamous act of terrorism on these shores and if that is not worth remembering, then surely happy childhood memories are.
