Congressional inquiry indicates Charles B. Nemeroff didn’t report income, violated federal research rules

An Emory University psychiatrist who is among the nation’s most influential earned more than $2.8 million in consulting arrangements with drug makers from 2000 to 2007, failed to report at least $1.2 million of that income to his university and violated federal research rules, according to documents provided to congressional investigators.

In one telling example, Nemeroff signed a letter dated July 15, 2004, promising Emory administrators that he would earn less than $10,000 a year from GlaxoSmithKline to comply with federal rules. But on that day, he was at the Four Seasons Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyo., earning $3,000 of what would become $170,000 in income that year from that company — 17 times the figure he had agreed on.

I normally wouldn’t beg for recommendations, but I think we need to pounce on this opportunity to prove that John McCain is a Washington Insider and his "tough talk" on earmarks is nothing but EMPTY RHETORIC!

We all remember John McCain’s angry pledge during his convention speech: he promised to veto the first bill on his desk that included pork barrel spending. He told us he’d teach them a lesson and "make famous" the politician who had the nerve to ask for an earmark. The crowd roared.

In last Friday’s debate, John McCain continued his tirade on earmarks and pork barrel spending. It was his response to nearly every economic question. Cutting earmarks is the hallmark of his economic plan. He said they lead to corruption and that several politicians are behind bars because of them. He said that he’s a maverick who would change Worshin’ton and again promised to veto any bill that included pork barrel spending.

He BROKE his promise.

LOU DOBBS: A presidential election now 35 days away. Election fraud still posing a dangerous threat to this democracy. Perhaps even worsening. Early voting began today in Ohio. After the State Supreme Court there ruled that absentee voters could register and cast their ballots on the same day. As Kitty Pilgrim now reports, that new law could lead to massive election fraud in that critical swing state.

PILGRIM: No photo ID is required. New Ohio voters have only to write down the last four digits of their Social Security number or write down their driver's license number.

DOBBS: Has everybody lost their minds? There's no way for these volunteers to check that. I mean it's an absurdity.

PILGRIM: Yeah, the officials we spoke to today say the county boards are just overwhelmed with the volume that they have to do at this point. It's such a big election.

DOBBS: Well, it is a big election, important election, but apparently no one cares about that. Kitty, thank you very much. Kitty Pilgrim.

Muslim Americans for Obama has announced a series of "get out the vote" events at mosques in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio this week during Ramadan celebrations.

These "get out the vote" events flagrantly violate the tax exempt status of these participating mosques which are strictly prohibited from supporting or endorsing any kind of partisan political activity.

More... Ohio Obama supporters are dragging homeless people off the streets in to vote.

The Iraqi Parliament just banned using mosques during election times

...The law includes a provision that allocates 25 percent of the seats to women and a prohibition on the use of mosques, pictures of clerical leaders and government institutions during the campaign season.

Since Speaker Pelosi took over the Swamp in 2006 her husband Paul Pelosi has continued paying his real estate firm with her PAC money.

Speaker Pelosi supported banning this practice of paying a spouse with political donations last year.

Pelosi criticised Tom Delay for putting his wife on his campaign and PAC payroll.

The Washington Times reported:

Pelosi has directed nearly $100,000 from her political action committee to her husband's real estate and investment firm over the past decade, a practice of paying a spouse with political donations that she supported banning last year.

FLS is on track to take in $48,000 in payments this year alone - eight times as much as it received annually from 2000 to 2005, when the committee was run by another treasurer.

the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal gave Democrats fodder to criticize Republicans such as former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay

for putting their wives on their campaign and PAC payrolls for fundraising work.

They range from the Congressional Budget Office's $1-2 trillion to an estimate by economists Joseph Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilmes of up to $4-5 trillion. So we're talking somewhere between one-and-a-half and seven bailouts-worth of taxpayer dollars flowing into the morass of disaster, corruption, and carnage in Iraq.

Let's start with the money the Bush administration has already thrown at the war in Iraq. According to the June congressional testimony of William Beach, director of the Center for Data Analysis, the war has cost $646 billion so far. The new defense budget for 2009 tacks on another $68.6 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan in the coming year. However, military expert Bill Hartung of the New America Foundation puts a conservative estimate of the costs of a single week of the Iraq War at approximately $3.5 billion (or about $180 billion a year).

In other words, the war in Iraq will cost far more in the next year than the Iraq portion of that $68.6 billion Congress is about to pony up in the defense budget, and so will be funded, as has long been true, through supplemental war bills submitted by the Bush administration (and then whatever administration follows). In other words, sometime in 2009 the direct costs of the war the Bush administration once predicted would cost perhaps $50-60 billio

She gladly accepted gifts from merchants: A free "awesome facial" she raved about in a thank-you note to a spa. The "absolutely gorgeous flowers" she received from a welding supply store. Even fresh salmon to take home.

Not that these things are to be excused out of hand, but Palin bends zoning rules — which I'm sure are stringent and a high stakes matter in Wasilla, Alaska — and gets a free facial. Obama gets a freakin' house with help from a someone indicted for money laundering, wire fraud, extortion and corrupt solicitation; has someone raising money for his campaign with well-publicized ties to organized crime; and the Illinois attorney general is currently looking into how Obama earmarked $100,000 for a former campaign volunteer who never spent the money for its intended purpose — and yet, I don't see too many "investigations" decrying Obama's transparently false claims he practices a "new" kind of politics.
