Goldman and Citibank get swine flu vaccine

Even as a feeding frenzy surrounds the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, New Yorkers were confronted with the news that Wall Street banking firms Goldman Sachs and Citibank were given 200 doses of swine flu vaccine—the same quantity given to Lenox Hill Hospital.

Goldman and Citibank were not the only corporations given doses of the vaccine, and any companies receiving the vaccine had to have their own medical personnel in place. Also, the understanding was that the vaccinations would be given only to employees in the highest-risk groups, which includes pregnant women, children, and those with chronic diseases such as asthma.

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is widely credited with the apparent gaffe, sources say the CDC gave the vaccine doses to the state, which dispensed them to hospitals, doctors, and corporations.

Those that read and enjoyed such posts as The Crash Course and Money as Debt will understand the significance of, and not be surprised by, the Federal Reserve (now former) chairman clearly stating that the Federal Reserve is a private agency, above the law, above the president and should not be subject to any outside interference. Despite having such a pivotal role in the U.S., and hence the world economy, the Federal Reserve is thus no different than private corporations like Monsanto, McDonalds, Tesco, etc. – it’s not working for the benefit of citizens, but is working for profit for its shareholders.

While thousands of at-risk Americans wait, some big Wall Street banks have already secured the hard-to-find H1N1 vaccine for their employees.

bankers at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and employees at the Federal Reserve have all received swine flu vaccine doses to administer to their employees

Goldman Sachs has received 200 doses of the vaccine -- the same amount as Lenox Hill Hospital in New York

Wall Street banks, like many other companies, put in requests for the vaccine but seem to have had something of a leg up on securing doses.

Some corporations seem to be getting the doses before doctors and hospitals

"If we know that the distribution is the weak part of this entire thing, why not put doctor's offices and hospitals at the top of the line, and say to corporate America, no matter who you are, you're you're going to have to go through clinics and hospitals like everyone else."

The internet chapter of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a secret copyright treaty whose text Obama's administration refused to disclose due to "national security" concerns, has leaked. It's bad. It says:

* * That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.

* * That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.
