You resisted the siren call of plastic teaser APRs, dutifully living within your means to store money for a rainy day. You never took out an interest-only mortgage. Never had to pawn the copper pipes from your exurban McMansion to pay the reset on your liar loan. Your credit score would have gotten you into Harvard at age 12.

Good for you! Your reward: injurious savings yields, inflationary rot, and election-season neglect, all served up with a dollop of institutional insecurity.

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute have just done a batch of research that they hope will help turn the world's roads into cheap collectors of solar power.

They started with the assumption that asphalt gets frakking hot when the sun shines on it, and then started making some serious leaps.

The result is blacktop that gets even hotter and stays hotter for longer than regular asphalt. Of course, this left them with the problem of how to get the energy out of the road. By laying down a series of flexible and highly conductive copper pipes before pouring the asphalt they were able to pump water through the asphalt, picking up the heat, for use in power generation.

8-foot statue of Jesus stolen off Detroit crucifix

clipper's remarks: It's unclear when the statue was snatched. A parishioner noticed it missing Monday from its perch on the side of the church, 10 feet above the ground. A small piece of plaster was found nearby.

The church has made a public plea for help.

"It is so crazy," Randolph said. "It's been there for so long and was a symbol of hope to a lot of people in this neighborhood."

Police were investigating, but department spokesman James Tate said it was doubtful thieves had mistaken the plaster statue for copper.

"People who steal copper know what copper is and what it feels like," Tate said. "There is no way they would think a plaster statue is some type of metal."

DETROIT (AP) - Thieves who stole an 8-foot statue of Jesus Christ off a crucifix in Detroit may have been seeking copper to sell as scrap. Problem is, it's made of plaster.

The Rev. Barry Randolph said Wednesday that the statue at the Church of the Messiah is green and looks like copper, one of several metals coveted by thieves because of soaring scrap prices.

Thieves have damaged copper pipes and stolen aluminum gutters at the church over the past few months, said Donya Ray-Gregg, a member of the congregation, which over the years has dwindled from about 350 members to just 50.

Copper pipes and wiring found in many of America's repossessed homes are now more valuable than the properties themselves.

Across the country thieves are stripping empty houses of the copper, aluminium, and brass in their plumbing and heating systems to take advantage of the crashing property market and the soaring price of scrap metal, much of which is sold to China and India.

The trend has accelerated as the glut of unwanted properties clog the market, dragging down house prices.

"Houses are getting stripped pretty quickly once they go through the foreclosure process," said Tony Brancatelli, a city councillor in Cleveland, Ohio, which has been particularly hard hit.

Aluminum of China, the parent of the nation's biggest producer of the metal, plans to buy more overseas copper mining companies to meet rising domestic demand and help diversify earnings.

Peru Copper, based in Vancouver, owns Peru's third-largest deposit of the metal used to make wires and pipes. Chinalco also agreed this year to buy a 49 percent stake in Yunnan Copper, which owns China's third-biggest producer.

"We hope to acquire more copper resources because this is where China is short," Xiao said.

Dogs chase down suspects in break-in at Georgia K-9 training facility

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - It's a bad idea to burglarize a place marked "K-9 training facility."

Police dog handlers arriving Wednesday at the abandoned nursing home where they hold training sessions discovered two men and a woman dismantling the building's copper pipes and wiring, Hall County Sheriff's Sgt. Kiley Sargent said.

When the officers arrived, the three dropped their tools and ran. That was their second mistake.

"For anyone to try to run from a whole unit of canines, it's just a no-win situation," Sargent said.

Pamela Puckett, 37, quickly surrendered. Marc Black, 18, was tracked to a trash bin behind a nearby convenience store. Paul Perry, 39, was treated for a superficial dog bite just below the buttocks after his arrest, authorities said.

Signs outside the northern Georgia facility warn, "Caution!!! Gainesville Police Department K-9 training facility - Keep Out."

Non-caustic drain openers -- anyone have recommendations?

clipper's remarks: I'd like to figure out a way to deal with organic clogs in my drains without using Drano, Liquid Plumr, etc. My pipes are old and made of copper. Will enzymatic cleaners actually break up serious clogs?

Are Liquid Plumr, Drano and similar products safe to use in an old house, or is there a better alternative?

I live in an 80-year-old house with old pipes that are generally in pretty good condition for their age. Occasionally we have minor clogs (usually hair). Is it OK to use commercial drain openers to fight the clogs? The bottles state that they are safe for all kinds of pipes, including old plumbing, but other people have told me this is not true. Is there something else I should be using instead?

You can't answer your own question.

The best alternative is to use an enzyme drain cleaner. Caustic cleaners eat a hole in the clog and go down the pipes, leaving the majority of the clog to start clogging again. Enzyme cleaners, such as Draincare by Zep, cling to and eat organic clogs. It is safe for all systems including septic tanks.

Not too long ago we reviewed the newest CPU cooler from Noctua, it was probably one of the best looking and best performing coolers to hit the market this year. This is a sign that not all great products come from the big mainstream companies like Thermalright and Scythe.

Well Noctua is at it again with a different cooler. This time however it is for your north bridge and not your processor. The NC-U6 looks like a miniature version of the NH-U12F CPU cooler. Sporting a high towering structure, the NC-U6 is bound to take the heat off your chipset. Consisting of twenty-nine aluminum fins and two copper heat pipes will look good doing it. This in turn will aid in a few more megahertz on that new CPU.

Mintz Scrap Iron & Metal Inc. employees bought stolen copper and other metals on 23 days during a six-week period from a man now facing dozens of burglary charges and often failed to ask for the man's identification, according to police.

Andrew Purvis, 34, sometimes visited the company owned by Spartanburg County Councilman-elect O'Neal Mintz two or three times a day. Business records show Purvis sold about 850 pounds of metal to the Magness Drive business and was paid almost $1,500, investigators said.
