EDITORIAL: A law that demands consent to internet cookies has been approved and will be in force across the EU within 18 months. It is so breathtakingly stupid that the normally law-abiding business may be tempted to bend the rules to breaking point.

The fate of Europe's cookie law became improbably entwined with a debate over file-sharing. To cut a long story short, it broke free. On 26th October, it was voted through by the Council of the EU. It cannot be stopped and awaits only the rubber-stamp formalities of signature and publication.

Sourdough (Natural Yeast) Doughts

clipper's remarks: I use to bake more and at one point was using mainly natural yeast starters. I've done pancakes, pizza, breads of course,, and even doughnuts. Considering I didn't use a deep fryer, ok, at times a little greasy.

But this is a good idea and a good way to use up starters.

So how could I possibly introduce yet another pizza recipe to you, our dear but perhaps a bit pizza-satiated readers?

I’ll tell you how. Because this particular pizza is a multi-tasker. Not only does it slip easily into place among its 38 brethren in the recipe database; it solves a problem.

Yeah, the “What’s for dinner” problem, for sure. But also the “What to do with that cup of sourdough starter I’m supposed to throw away” issue.

But sourdough – like one of its basic components, yeast – is oh-so-forgiving. (Though, if you’ve truly managed to kill your starter, we offer fresh sourdough starter here at King Arthur.)

Google Chrome Syncs Bookmarks Almost Instantly

Google Chrome’s bookmark sync has come a long way since I last looked at it. The latest Windows beta build now offers bookmark sync, which by itself may not sound glamorous. But at the tail end of the video demonstration it gets a bit more interesting. If you have multiple computers signed in to Google, adding a bookmark on one computer adds it to the other in a near-real-time fashion. Google is leveraging the XMPP servers it uses for Google Talk to make the magic happen. That’s pretty clever since the first word in IM is “instant.”

Although Google didn’t mention this in their blog post, I noticed something interesting when I performed an initial sync: Google is also leveraging Google Docs for the bookmark data. The sync completion screen tipped me off, so of course I had to go look in my Google Docs account. Sure enough, there’s a folder structure there, complete with my shortcuts.

Oatmeal Pecan Cookies

Ingredients

1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup extra light olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons real vanilla extract
1 teaspoon coconut extract
2 large eggs
2 cups quick oats
1 (18.25 ounce) box yellow cake mix
2 cups quick oats, uncooked

1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

1. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. On a plate, cook pecans in the microwave for 1 ½ to 2 minutes stirring every 30 seconds until toasted. Set aside.

3. In a stand mixer, beat together sugar, oil, vanilla extract, and coconut extract on medium speed for 2 minute. Add the eggs and beat for 1 more minute. Then add the oats and mix until combined. Mix in the cake beat just until mixed, and then mix in the pecans.

4. With a standard (size 50) cookie scoop, scoop the dough and place on the parchment 2 inches apart.

5. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until or until golden brown on the bottoms, very lightly brown on top and no longer wet looking. Cool on wire rack.

Makes 53 cookies

(Newser) – The leader of the free world may have been masquerading as a frumpy suburban dad and handing out dried fruit, but it was still a pretty cool treat for a couple thousand DC-area kids who went trick-or-treating at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave last night. With the first lady dressed as a leopard, President and Michelle Obama handed out White House M&Ms, White House-shaped sugar cookies, and the aforementioned dessicated fruit.

A brass band in skeleton costumes pumped out gypsy music as makeup artists from a Chicago theater company painted faces and a Rhode Island farmer showed off his 1300-pound pumpkin, reports the Washington Post. Some 2,600 schoolkids chosen at random happily passed through the White House gates, but, professed one 9-year-old: "I'm not a fan of dried fruit."

Oatmeal Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookies
Adapted from this Joy of Baking Recipe

3/4 cup room temperature unsalted butter

3/4 cup dark brown sugar

1 large egg

2 tsp vanilla extract

3/4 cup all purpose flour

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup sweetened flaked coconut, packed tightly

1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Beat the softened butter and brown sugar until well combined, add the vanilla and egg. Sift the baking soda, flour, cinnamon and salt and add slowly to the butter and sugar. Stir in the oats. When combined add the coconut and chocolate chips. Line cookie trays with parchment paper. Use a heaping tablespoon full of dough gently form a ball, place on the cookie sheet and flatten slightly. This will make about 24 cookies. Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes until lightly browned.

Olive Oil Chocolate Chip Cookies

Recipe Adapted From Chicago Sun-Times

2 1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chocolate chips

A dash of rice milk or milk

Combine sugars, vanilla and oil first. Then slowly add the eggs. Now add all of your dry ingredients and chocolate chip cookies. Now add just a dash of milk…or just enough to bring the dough together in a firm ball.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake until just golden, about 10-12 minutes.
