clipper's remarks: Could this happen here in the biggest meat consuming countries in the world? Don’t we care enough about our health to cut meat out of our diets at least one day a week? Most of our health costs stem from eating red meat. Most of our food costs stem from feeding cattle. Doesn’t it make economic as well as heatlh sense to cut down on our red meat consumption?

The global Meatless Monday movement continues to gain momentum. Britain, Brazil, Holland, Finland and Taiwan have already launched their programs. Now, we’d like to welcome the wonderful people of Canada and congratulate them as they begin their own Meatless Monday!

The Canadian Meatless Monday launched at this year’s Taste of Health convention in Vancouver, Canada. Taste of Health is an opportunity for those concerned with healthy, environmentally friendly food to come together. The convention’s 6,000 attendees welcomed Meatless Monday with open arms.

Unlike many of the solutions to global warming that require government action, Meatless Monday is a tangible personal action that every Canadian can easily embrace. More greenhouse gasses can be prevented by going meatless one day a week than by eating locally seven days a week.

Non seulement ça ressemble à du suif, mais en plus ça doit avoir le même goût ! En plus de cela, c'est hyper salé, impossible d'avaler ce truc sans ressentir de la nausée. Et le goût reste en bouche même après un brossage vigoureux. Conclusion de cette première expérience : la Vegemite est une invention du diable, les Australiens sont des tarés, leurs papilles sont définitivement perdues pour la cause. Pas étonnant que ce truc ne se soit jamais imposé en-dehors de leurs frontières. Même les Anglais et les Américains n'en veulent pas, c'est dire. Franchement, cette chose devrait être interdite par la Convention de Genève. D'ailleurs, je suis sûr qu'ils en font bouffer aux prisonniers irakiens pour les faire parler, ça doit être plus efficace que la gégène.

Obama calls tea partiers "extremists" as they rally in Iowa, plus GOP fundraiser highlights

As freedom loving Americans from around Iowa headed to Des Moines this weekend, President Barack Obama was calling these same U.S. taxpayers "extremists", during an effort to rally the Democrats to pass PelosiCare. Iowa Congressmen Steve King and Tom Latham were on the front line on Capitol Hill, trying to thwart the attempted takeover of our healthcare industry.

Meanwhile, Saturday was a big day for conservatives and Republicans in the nation's most important state for Presidential elections. The Iowa Tea Party held its statewide convention, former 4-term Governor Terry Branstad held an open house in his new campaign headquarters, and 2012 Presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty headlined an Iowa GOP fundraiser.

Nonreligious community increasingly split by provocative tactics

SEATTLE When some 600 atheists, agnostics and other nonreligious folks gather in Seattle starting Friday for a Freedom From Religion Foundation convention, there will be an emphatically nonprayer breakfast.

Not to mention hundreds of provocative bus ads, including one with Santa saying: "Yes, Virginia ... there is no God."

The ads may seem in-your-face to some. But the Wisconsin-based organization has never shied from controversy. It has filed lawsuits on state-church separation issues and sponsored "Imagine No Religion" and "Reason's Greetings" billboards in Seattle; Olympia,. Wash.; and other cities.

Last winter, it put up an anti-religion sign in the Washington state Capitol building that raised a furor, eventually involving FOX News personality Bill O'Reilly and prompting thousands of phone calls to the governor's office.

That is, whether the president is "a very manly, virile, manful person, and a firm believer in strict discipline, corporal punishment, and nude apartment wrestling."

Oops, never mind. That last bit was Captain Ned. But it does get old hearing this cohort of Ivy League toughs -- most of whom one suspects haven't had even a fistfight since third grade -- describe every U.S. foreign policy issue as a testosterone test. One suspects it may not be Obama's virility they're worried about.

Next came Cheney's devoted daughter. After President Obama paid a 4 a.m. visit to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to salute the flag-draped caskets of 18 American servicemen arriving home from Afghanistan, and to console their families, Liz Cheney appeared on -- where else? -- Fox News radio to suggest a cheap political stunt.

Out on the ragged edges of America's misconceived "war on terror," events in Afghanistan daily dramatize the awful situation confronting President Obama. He appears to have no good options. To be sure, Obama invited trouble, telling an audience at a VFW convention last August, "This is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity."

Tanzania to Benefit From Legal & Illegal Trade In Ivory

Tanzania is reportedly preparing to ask CITES to lift the trade ban on elephant ivory, much to the dismay of its EAC neighbors, conservationists, and members of the tourism industry.

In a move that would surely undermine East African conservation efforts, Tanzania has taken up the position that a sanctioned sale of elephant ivory would provide much-needed financial support to the country’s anti-poaching measures.

This comes as a shock to the East African Community (EAC), considering that last year’s sanctioning of a one-off ivory auction is to blame for igniting a scourge of rampant elephant killings throughout Africa - particularly Kenya.

According to Tanzania’s The Citizen, both Tanzania and Zambia have prepared to appeal for the lift of the ivory trade ban at the March 2010 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in Quatar.

Tanzania’s position will not be welcomed by the EAC, conservationists or the tourism industry.

Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies and the Transnational Institute wants politicians, particularly President Obama, to know that criticizing Israel is no longer political suicide. Despite Republican fearmongering, 78% of Jewish voters supported Obama, and the rise of the new, pro-peace J Street lobby, which held its first convention this week, did not happen in a vacuum.

The discourse, she notes, has changed and Americans no longer wholeheartedly support militaristic policies in Israel. There is room for debate on these issues, and politicians should fear hiding from it more than they fear addressing the issues.

Proposals To Outlaw Fishing of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna

Atlantic bluefin tuna populations have declined so drastically that trade in the fish should be completely outlawed, says a new report. The population of the Atlantic tuna, a sushi staple, is now about 15 percent of the original stock size, says International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas’ (ICCAT). The report has delighted conservation groups, who have criticized ICCAT’s regulation policies. The report was triggered by Monaco’s recent proposal to ban international trade in the Atlantic bluefin under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) – a proposal that has gathered support from several other European countries [BBC News].

ICCAT has a history of setting quotas higher for the fish than scientists say is safe, while CITES seems to take a more proactive approach

In Japan, the fish are so highly prized that a single giant tuna can sell for more than $100,000 at the wholesale fish market. ICCAT will meet in 10 days to discuss the report.
