Rep. Mark Souder, an Indiana Republican, said he was looking at an "Obama tide" in his district and wondering about his own reelection: "Can I withstand a firestorm?"

When Bill and Hillary Clinton take the stage Sunday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, it will be the launch of an active campaign for their former nemesis Barack Obama in the home stretch of the 2008 presidential race.

Once the nation's best known and most powerful Democrats, the former first couple is getting used to a new role: cheerleaders for Obama, who vanquished Hillary Clinton last spring in a Democratic primary contest for the ages.

Whatever recriminations the Clintons may still harbor from that long battle seem to have been nudged aside as they campaign in earnest for the Democratic ticket.

The New York senator and the former president will appear with Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, at a rally Sunday in Scranton, a working class town that has assumed something of an outsize role in the presidential race.

After the rally, the Clintons will follow separate itineraries through presidential battleground states.

National Novel Writing Month, or nanowrimo for you cool folks, is only a few short weeks away. Starting Nov. 1st I will be starting the insanity; a month long quest to write the Great American Novel, or at least 50,000 words of it. Sound interesting? Click on over and sign up. clipper's remarks: Sarah Palin isn’t in this election to change anything in Washington, she is in this race to win. This is nothing more than a contest to her. Her competitive spirit is dictating that she not back down (an unthinkable act contrary to her very nature) and do whatever it takes to win.

The current state of the republican party has degenerated into an unethical, immoral, propaganda generating, smear machine designed more for character assassination than solidifying itself as a viable platform of positive change.

John McCain, who I believe is a decent person, has made a grave error in judgment, perhaps blinded by the prize, but nonetheless, has done himself and his party (and therefore his country) a grave disservice. As a result of his choice the world now sees him as selling out his principles for his party.

His only hope to win this election (and granted it would be an unprecedented and desperate attempt) is to replace Sarah Palin with, pretty much, anyone else.

In the 1970s, the disgraced Richard Nixon famously insisted that “when the president does it, that means it is not illegal.”

And what is the Alaska governor’s public response to this assault on American freedoms? She stands on the political stump and applauds a corrupt ideology.

Supreme Court May Bar Groups From Contesting Federal Rules

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday appeared sympathetic to a legal position held by the Bush administration that would limit environmentalists and other public interest groups from challenging federal regulations.

The case centers on a dispute over rules imposed by the U.S. Forest Service, but legal experts contend the court's ultimate decision could have far-reaching impacts and make it nearly impossible for many individuals and third parties to contest rules enacted by federal agencies.

The origins of the case lie in regulations enacted by the Bush administration in 2003 that limited some federal timber sales and logging projects from the agency's usual notice, comment and appeal procedures.

The 2003 Forest Service rules affected timber projects of less than 250 acres and "forest thinning" projects of 1,000 acres or less.

The leader of South Africa's official opposition, Helen Zille, says she would welcome a split in the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party.

She was responding to former Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota's threat on Wednesday to form new party.

Ms Zille says a split would be a "good thing for South Africa"

"We're seeing a non-racial alignment... on the basis of principles and that's a very good thing," she told the BBC.

But ANC leader Jacob Zuma said a new party would be not threat to the ruling party in polls due next year.

"This splinter party will never be a real threat. Here we are talking about a party that has not been formed as yet and if it were to be formed, it will have very little time to mobilise support before the elections," South Africa's Witness newspaper quotes him as saying.

Ms Zille, who heads the Democratic Alliance, said if Mr Lekota did form a new party it would not threaten her party

Ms Zille said that she would work with all parties "opposed to power abuse".

As the rhetoric at Palin's rallies has ratcheted up, so too has the language of supporters in the crowds coming to see her. At rallies in Florida, supporters were heard yelling "treason" and "traitor" when Obama's name was mentioned.

At a rally on Monday in Clearwater, one man shouted "Kill him," according to the Washington Post, after Palin mentioned Obama's association with 1960s radical Bill Ayers. It was not clear who made the comment or if the man was referring to Ayers or to Obama, but the Secret Service says it will investigate.

Palin's speeches and a series of recently released negative ads, some pundits say, are all par for the course in the waning days of a closely fought contest. Now questions are being raised, by the opposition and by outside observers, about whether Palin is stoking people's worst natures and, more broadly, about when a candidate should take her supporters to task when they go too far.

'Opus' coming to an end

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is retiring, leaving a hole in the Sunday funnies and the hearts of "Opus" fans.

The last strip featuring the beloved, large-beaked penguin will run in about 200 newspapers nationwide November 2. Breathed announced Monday he's calling it quits after a comics career that has spanned nearly 30 years.

Amy Lago, comics editor of The Washington Post Writers Group, said Breathed will pursue other interests, such as writing books and screenplays.

The writers group unveiled his "Bloom County" strip in 1980; he went on to win the Pulitzer for editorial cartooning in 1987. He ended that strip in 1989 and the same year began the Sunday-only strip "Outland," which he quit in 1995. In 2003, he launched "Opus."

This Sunday's strip will include a contest in which Breathed asks readers to guess the penguin's fate. Details on how to participate are not being released ahead of time. The answer will appear online after the last "Opus" runs next month,

First, this "plan" would piss off a lot of people who bought houses they could afford and would then watch others who bought houses they could not afford (granted given bad advice/loans) and have taxpayers bail them out so they can stay in homes they really should not be in, in the first place.
If there had been oversight in the govt and better regulation, none of these people would be in the situation they are in because it would have been a crime for these douche bag mortgage brokers and others to pitch them and give them the loans.
So now this guy wants to take another $300 billion on top of the almost trillion the tax payers have already put into this mess. What a fracking idiot.

BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - White House hopeful John McCain pitched a $300 billion plan to help struggling homeowners on Wednesday as he tried to erode an advantage held by Democratic rival Barack Obama on economic issues.

The day after a sometimes tense second presidential debate, the ailing economy again took center stage in the White House contest.

Both candidates welcomed cuts in global interest rates, even though the reductions failed to stop the tumult on Wall Street.

Two snap polls judged Obama the winner of the Nashville, Tennessee, debate on Tuesday night. That suggested that McCain, a Republican, could be running out of chances to recast the November 4 race, which has been trending toward his Democratic opponent.

Microsoft followed their annual major Tech-Ed event in Australia with a week-long programming contest called "DevSta," to find "star developers." While the quantity and quality of submissions suggest a poor turnout it certainly caught the attention of at least two hackers who left their mark.

Microsoft Australia’s DevSta challenge 2008 is on, and in fact at this time of writing still has 19 hours to go in case you’ve got a good idea and can code quickly.

Contest entries can be coded for Microsoft Windows desktops, Microsoft-based web servers, Windows Mobile, Windows Vista’s Sidebar or Silverlight web apps.
