Modipalm wins 3 Wilmar Mill contracts

CB Industrial Product Holding Bhd’s subsidiary Modipalm Engineering Sdn Bhd, has been awarded three palm oil mill construction contracts worth US$4.28mil each from Wilmar International Ltd group.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said Modipalm had on June 10, received the letters of award from three companies in the stable of the Singapore-listed Wilmar.

The contracts are for the design, supply, delivery, test, supervision and commissioning of palm oil mills in Sampit, Kalimantan.THE END

The contraction of Britain's building sector accelerated again last month, and construction orders over the three months to May also dropped, adding weight to fears that the UK faces a "double dip" return to recession.

The construction purchasing managers' index, a leading indicator of economy activity, had showed a brief lift in May. But the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (Cips) said yesterday that its index had dropped back by more than a point to 44.5 in June, still well below the break-even "50" mark.

Alongside wavering confidence in the future, historical data is also gloomier than expected. Office of National Statistics (ONS) numbers for the three months to May, also published yesterday, show construction industry orders falling by 1 per cent compared with the previous three months, and 30 per cent year on year.

with banks still reluctant to lend, and concerns over public debt rising, the economy is in danger of slipping back, analysts warn.

It is mostly forgotten now but it was President Richard Nixon, not earlier Presidents John Kennedy or Lyndon Johnson, who launched affirmative action. Prior to the Nixon administration, the whole thrust of legal and political action had been to remove legal barriers to equal opportunity rather than constructing a system setting aside actual or de facto quotas favoring one group or another.

Nixon Presidency

undertook an initiative to break notorious discrimination in the construction industry and unions. The so-called Philadelphia Plan was established which set aside a certain percentage of jobs for African Americans in construction trades. The practice soon spread elsewhere and became called affirmative action.

National liberals most active in leading the drive toward the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts were suspicious of affirmative action.

A woman is pulled from near the Center Street dam by construction worker Jason Oglesbee on Tuesday. A man who was with the unidentified woman died in the Des Moines River. A rescue team from the Des Moines Fire Department tried several times to rescue the woman but could not get close enough to her. (Andrea Melendez/The Register)

A construction worker dangled from a heavy-duty chain supported by a crane to rescue a woman from the swirling waters of the Des Moines River on Tuesday afternoon.

The dramatic rescue was met with cheers from spectators who had gathered on the banks of the river and nearby bridges after the boat the woman was in went over the Center Street dam.

Minutes before the woman was rescued, a Des Moines fire rescue team pulled the body of the woman's boating companion, a man of about 60, from the river downstream. The man had drowned.

US companies cut nearly a half million jobs last month as the recession continued to cut into the labour market in spite of other recent signs of hope in the economy.

Private companies cut 473,000 jobs from their payrolls in June, according to a survey by ADP employer services on Wednesday.

Employment in the goods-producing sector was hit the hardest, where 250,000 jobs were shed. Manufacturers, which have shed workers for 40 months in a row, culled 146,000 jobs in June, and construction employment fell by 97,000 as builders continue to cut back. In the services sector 223,00 jobs were lost.

June for the fifth straight month and were down 9 per cent compared with the same month a year ago. However, persistent high levels of jobless claims and Tuesday’s Conference Board report showing a drop in consumer confidence continue to darken optimism for a fast recovery.

Economists expect that the US shed another 363,000 workers in June, pushing the unemployment rate to 9.6 per cent.
