do worse on memory tests.

Scientists interested in the effects of stereotype on memory enlisted

seniors

to take a memory test.

some subjects were told that the test checked the effects of age on memory.
Researchers call this a threat—it reminds participants of the stereotype. That
group was also asked to write down their age after reading the instructions,
again homing in on the stereotype.

The other group was told that the test controlled for biases. This could make
them feel more secure. Researchers also gave participants a stigma consciousness
questionnaire to test how strongly they bought into negative stereotypes.

The results: participants who got reminded of their age and the old age, poor
memory stereotype did significantly worse. Those who say they feel stigmatized
also performed more poorly. So your memory may function better just by believing
that it will.

Tags: aging, research, study, memory, stereotypes

<clipSource>http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode.cfm?id=elderly-who-forget-age-remember-bet-09-05-19</clipSource>

Dreaming and conciousness

clipped by: wozzeck63
clipper's remarks: very interesting, Find This

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

“I argue that dreaming is not a parallel state but that it is consciousness itself, in the absence of input from the senses,” said Dr. Llinás, who makes the case in the book “I of the Vortex: From Neurons to Self” (M.I.T., 2001). What is that state of Cosmic Consciousness, the ultimate awareness called variously - enlightenment, nirvana, satori, samadhi, self-realization, rapture, salvation, ascension, unity consciousness, voidness, and many other terms by many various religions? It is the goal of life, the ultimate destination of every individualized being. It is brought about when the individual personality ascends beyond the illusionary perception of self separateness to merge in the Universal Self from which it originated so very long ago. Spiritual evolution towards this goal takes place over ages but the final ascent of Spirit can happen in an instant of time.

Meditation or Dhyana is the seventh limb of the Patanjali Yoga Sutra. Meditation helps an individual reach a state of tranquility and the practitioner is rejuvenated with ultimate serenity. Through meditation, one can experience a calm and relaxed state of mind. Highest joy is realized as the practitioner experience the oneness with their own center of consciousness, the Atma.

Tags: yoga cds, yoga music, kundalini yoga music, music for meditation

<clipSource>http://www.spiritvoyage.com/yogablog/index.php/2009/11/05/meditation-music-for-kundalini-yoga/</clipSource>

Three feminists on dirty words, pop culture, and the language of choice

clipped by: Lexica

Clip Source: jezebel.com

Yesterday the Planned Parenthood NYC Action Fund brought together Jessica Valenti of Feministing, Lynn Harris of Broadsheet, and longtime reproductive rights activist and writer Gloria Feldt to discuss everything from feminist pop culture to whether "feminism" is a dirty word.

The evening seemed to focus on how we talk about feminism

issues of language and rhetoric are a really important part of being a feminist in the larger world. The conversation touched on blog comments — which all three agreed were like a more public version of 1970s consciousness-raising groups — before zeroing in on the word "feminist" itself. Valenti said she embraced the word, and that there was no point in picking another, less loaded term because "I think any word you use to talk about women's rights is going to become a dirty word." Feldt concurred: "the first thing people do to you when they want to diminish you is they diminish you with language."

Tags: feminism, women, language, culture

<clipSource>http://jezebel.com/5397833/three-feminists-on-dirty-words-pop-culture-and-the-language-of-choice</clipSource>

Big game fishing,Jiggling,Trolling - Sport Fishing Center

clipped by: there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines

inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. Furthermore,
it is constantly in contact with other interests, so that it is continually

Situated in southern England, built by our Neolithic ancestors, it’s at least 5,000 years old, and may even have existed when England was still connected to continental Europe, and the Thames was a tributary of the Rhine.

The Ridgeway of today is 87 miles long. But about half of that is a series of footpaths that connect the original old track following the ridge up on the chalk escarpment to the Thames River in the east

It’s close to silent up here. Soon the sound of traffic fades from consciousness, and we move back into a world of bleats and birdsong, and soughing wind.

“This is what I’m after,” Rory tells me. “To get away from the sounds of petrol.”

My room is in an annex, and the tub has wonderfully, fearsomely hot water.

We meet back in the bar, restored and fully perpendicular, for a further pair of pints, and a brace of excellent local pork chops in cider sauce.

Tags: england, history, stone-age, hiking, travel

<clipSource>http://travel.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/travel/01ridgeway.html?em=&pagewanted=all#</clipSource>
