When it hits plants on a roof, in contrast, the plants not only absorb the sunshine, but cool the air when the water in their leaves evaporates.

Temperatures on buildings with green roofs are up to 30 percent lower during the daytime in the summer than they are on those with conventional roofs, which means that tenants on the floors below do not have to run their air-conditioning as much. Con Ed has teamed up with Columbia University’s Center for Climate Systems Research to evaluate the benefits, using rooftop sensors to measure the temperature, wind and water runoff. Con Edison said it hoped to use the findings to encourage customers to install green roofs themselves.

David Westman, the resource conservation coordinator at Con Edison, said, “It’s not only the right thing to do, but it can make economic sense.”

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

The roof of a Con Edison training center in Long Island City is covered with sedum, an absorbent plant typically found in deserts.

The thousands of recently planted green and purple shrublike sedum lining the roof of Con Edison’s training center in Long Island City look a bit out of place in the shadow of Manhattan’s skyline.

But the tiny absorbent leaves and modest but hardy roots of the sedum — typically found in desert climates — are at the center of a growing effort to reduce greenhouse gases, rainwater runoff and electricity demand in New York.

This month, Gov. <A title="More articles about David A. Paterson approved tax abatements to developers and building owners who install green roofs, or a layer of vegetation and rock that absorbs rainwater, insulates buildings and extends the lives of roofs. Sedum, which soaks up water quickly and releases it slowly, is an ideal plant for the job.

The best locations for green roofs are buildings with large, flat tops well exposed to the sun.

it can make economic sense.

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/nyregion/28roof.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=slogin</clipSource>

Forged Letter to Saddam Used to Justify Iraq War

clipped by: blueridge
clipper's remarks: The White House denies THEY controlled this. But.

1. They do not deny there was a forged letter, if you read closely, to link Saddam to 9/11 falsely.

2. Dick Cheney (lead neocon in making the case for war, and member of the Project for New American Century blueprint for regime change in Iraq written in Sept. 2000) even admits he is not part of the Executive Branch.

So the White House officially did not control this, but Cheney (who was "visiting the CIA daily", it was reported) and the neocons in the Office of Special Plans did this.

Again, 9/11 was centrally used to claim to justify war with Iraq where even per Bush "Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11", yet this was the link they established to the public. 9/11 was a Neo-Con job, and this demonstrates further how they used it.

Clip Source: www.politico.com

Book says White House ordered forgery

A new book by the author Ron Suskind claims that the White House ordered the CIA to forge a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein.

Suskind writes in “The Way of the World,” to be published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery – adamantly denied by the White House – was designed to portray a false link between Hussein’s regime and al Qaeda as a justification for the Iraq war.

“The White House had concocted a fake letter from Habbush to Saddam, backdated to July 1, 2001,” Suskind writes. “It said that 9/11 ringleader Mohammad Atta had actually trained for his mission in Iraq – thus showing, finally, that there was an operational link between Saddam and al Qaeda, something the Vice President’s Office had been pressing CIA to prove since 9/11 as a justification to invade Iraq. There is no link.”

part of “false pretenses” for war

arguably impeachable offense.

Tags: bush, cheney, iraq war, saddam hussein, cia

<clipSource>http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12308.html</clipSource>

Drivers warned over 'cheap' fuel offer

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: About bloody time people were told what actually happens in this con job. Liebling meant when he said the press is "the weak slat under the bed of democracy." The slat broke after the invasion and some strange bedfellows fell to the floor: establishment journalists, neo-con polemicists, beltway pundits, right-wing warmongers flying the skull and bones of the "balanced and fair brigade," administration flacks whose classified leaks were manufactured lies - all romping on the same mattress in the foreplay to disaster.

The job of trying to tell the truth about people whose job it is to hide the truth is almost as complicated and difficult as trying to hide it in the first place. We journalists are, of course, obliged to cover the news, but our deeper mission is to uncover the news that powerful people would prefer to keep hidden.

The present crisis of Western democracy is a crisis of journalism.

Tags: bill moyers, 5th estate, big media, crime, democracy, free press, mainstream media, media consolidation

<clipSource>http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-moyers/on-journalism_b_95444.html</clipSource>

Male Army Major revealed as female con-artist

clipped by: queerty
clipper's remarks: Being queer rocks in my world. None-the-less, many companies have found ways to tally take advantage of jobseekers and RebateProcessorJobs.com is one of them.

When you first find RebateProcessorJobs.com you’ll begin to feel like your financial situation is going to be ok. Like any scam site, they’ll use manipulation techniques to play on your emotions and sucker you into paying THEM money to work. NEVER, EVER, E-V-E-R pay a penny to work. A real “job” online is like a real “job” in the “real world” – it will PAY YOU to work, not the other way around.

So after you pay your $40 to RebateProcessorJobs.com you’ll quickly discover that, as I have written before, this is not at all even a “rebate processing” job! This company, like myself, and maybe even you, is a member of ClickBank. They want YOU to get people to buy clickbank items.

HOW IT WORKS:

Tags: scam

<clipSource>http://paidopps.blogspot.com/2008/03/rebate-processor-jobscom-huge-scam-con.html</clipSource>

Pelosi's Scheme To Neuter Verification And Enforcement Act

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: The Baca Amendment would give illegal aliens who pass a background check a "five-year temporary worker permit" that expires on Dec. 31, 2012. It would also provide employers who hired illegal aliens (some measure of immunity from prosecution) for past hiring of illegal aliens. If Mr. Shuler gets enough signatures to force his bill (SAVE) Act, H.R. 4088, to the floor to be debated, Democrats hope to neuter it by attaching the Baca Amendment. If Mr. Baca's proposal were to become law, open-borders advocates could come back later and pass legislation on pathway to citizenship. While not endorsing the Baca Amendment, a senior official with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce told Congressional Quarterly that he believed there was "some kind of deal in the works."

Mr. Bilbray says of Mrs. Pelosi's efforts to derail the SAVE Act with amnesty legislation. "What happened last summer," with the defeat of the Senate amnesty bill, "should be a warning," he told The Washington Times.

Clip Source: www.washingtontimes.com

Last month, Mrs. Pelosi joined House Minority Leader John Boehner in announcing that the House-passed economic stimulus bill would "not allow any taxpayer funds to be distributed to illegals."

But unfortunately, the Democrats are putting together an elaborate con job: using tough-sounding rhetoric while working behind the scenes with open-borders advocates in the business community to win support from from firms that have become very dependent on cheap foreign labor.

Specifically, they are very worried about the fact that a growing number of moderate and conservative Republicans and Democrats (and even a few liberals) are cosponsoring the Secure America through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act, H.R. 4088, introduced by Rep. Sixty accredited experts in climate and related scientific disciplines signed a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, urging that billions of Canadian tax dollars appropriated to implement the Kyoto Protocol on climate change “will be squandered without a proper assessment of recent developments in climate science.”

"They wrote that if today’s extensive climate knowledge and measuring capabilities had existed in the mid-1990s, the Kyoto treaty “would almost certainly not exist, because we would have concluded it was not necessary.”

Clip Source: canadafreepress.com

Most of that data is freely available to scientists and others on the Internet. Using it, hundreds of highly qualified climatologists and other scientists outside the fraternal network of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have challenged climate prediction models and other assumptions of the IPCC’s reports. While there’s consensus that climates change over time, climatologists are sharply divided over the interactions of the many potential causes. As research emerges, CO2 as a primary warming force becomes harder to defend with hard data.
