Unified Parallel C (UPC) is an extension of the C programming language designed for high-performance computing on large-scale parallel machines, including those with a common global address space (SMP and NUMA) and those with distributed memory (eg. clusters). The programmer is presented with a single shared, partitioned address space, where variables may be directly read and written by any processor, but each variable is physically associated with a single processor. UPC uses a Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) model of computation in which the amount of parallelism is fixed at program startup time, typically with a single thread of execution per processor.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, has hit the European press circuit in full-on tease mode. He’s talking up a new version of the Windows operating system that will cater to so-called cloud computing technology, where people use software running in a data center rather than on their local machine.

Mr. Ballmer has mentioned this operating system, called Windows Cloud, at events in London and Paris. The name-dropping comes ahead of Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference later this month in Los Angeles.

So what exactly is Windows Cloud? Well, Microsoft won’t budge on exact details just yet.

Now Mile Gu at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and colleagues, claim that it may be possible to prove Anderson's idea. They studied a basic mathematical model called the Ising model, which is often used to study how magnetism arises in iron and other materials from the collective organisation of their atoms.
Using the model, the team focused on whether the pattern that the atoms adopt under various scenarios, such as a state of lowest energy, could be calculated from knowledge of those forces. They found that in some scenarios, the pattern of atoms could not be calculated from knowledge of the forces - even given unlimited computing power. In mathematical terms, the system is considered "formally undecidable".

ONE of the grand aims of science is to explain every aspect of nature in terms of simple, fundamental laws - but is this possible? A team of physicists claims to have found a hint that some things simply cannot be computed, and that nature could be more than the sum of its parts.

The idea of reductionism, a key tool in science for centuries, holds that everything in nature can ultimately be understood by gaining knowledge of its constituent parts. The laws of fluid flows, for example, can be derived from the deeper laws of atomic and molecular motion, which in turn follow from quantum physics.

In 1972, physicist Philip Anderson pointed out that there could be a problem with this approach. Anderson suggested that some systems may be more than the sum of their parts. He championed "emergence" - the notion that important kinds of organisation might emerge in systems of many interacting parts, but not follow in any way from the properties of those parts.

SAN FRANCISCO - Oracle(ORCL Quote - Cramer on ORCL - Stock Picks) CEO Larry Ellison doesn't think the future is bright for VMware(VMW Quote - Cramer on VMW - Stock Picks), the Android phone and cloud computing.

Ellison said Oracle will not invest in cloud computing centers, which he characterized as the latest fashion trend that, like on-demand software, lacks a profitable economic model. "Who's making money at cloud computing?"

As for on-demand software competitor Salesforce.com(CRM Quote - Cramer on CRM - Stock Picks) it "barely makes money at all," he said.

Although Oracle's own on-demand service recently turned profitable, the company intends to stick primarily with its model of selling licensed business software.

In the few instances where sophisticated mathematics proves useful, it is very impressive and leaves a long lasting impression on us. So we tend to try to reproduce it elsewhere, and we fail.

It is not so much that we should stop using Mathematics, but we should be critical of its powers.

So, PageRank uses Markov processes to compute the authority of a Web page. Very impressive, is it? But is it any better than computing the number of inbound links? Maybe. Maybe not. Using fancy Mathematics should not grant you immunity.

A network of 100,000 computers providing the greatest data processing capacity yet unleashed has been created to cope with information pouring from the world’s largest machine.

The Grid is the latest evolution of the internet and the world wide web and computer scientists will announce on Friday that it is ready to be connected to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

It is designed for schemes where huge quantities of data need crunching, such as large research and engineering projects. The Grid has the kind of power required to download movies in seconds, and the ability to make high-definition video phone calls for the same price as a local call. More importantly, it should help to narrow the search for cures for diseases. However, it is unlikely to be directly available to most internet users until telecoms providers build the fibre-optic network required to use it.

I know, the economy is rough these days. Myself, I'm unwilling to look at my mutual funds until we're through this. The idea is that when it does not seem like a good time to start a company, typically that is the best time to start a company. In this case you’re looking to bring in second generation technology, or technology created out of the lessons learned in the first. Thus, you have a better understanding of the problems at hand, and how SOA technology can solve those problems. There are huge opportunities here, as long as you make the right moves.

"The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we've redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do. I can't think of anything that isn't cloud computing with all of these announcements. The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women's fashion. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It's complete gibberish. It's insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?

Cloud computing is a trap, warns GNU founder Richard Stallman

Web-based programs like Google's Gmail will force people to buy into locked, proprietary systems that will cost more and more over time, according to the free software campaigner

Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and creator of the computer operating system GNU, said that cloud computing was simply a trap aimed at forcing more people to buy into locked, proprietary systems that would cost them more and more over time.

"It's stupidity. It's worse than stupidity: it's a marketing hype campaign," he told The Guardian.

His comments echo those made last week by Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle, who criticised the rash of cloud computing announcements as "fashion-driven" and "complete gibberish".
