Educational Origami is a blog, and a wiki, about the integration of ICT into the classroom, this is one of the largest challenges that I feel we as teachers face. Its about 21st Century Learning and 21st Century Teaching. Marc Prensky coined the now popular and famous phrase "Digital natives and digital immigrants" in his two papers on digital Children. We the teachers are the immigrants and our students are the natives, brought up in a world where there has always been computers and the internet, where information is always instant and varied. Our teaching and their learning must reflect this.

'The Grid' will see 80,000 computer network processing data from LHC

A network of around 80,000 computers worldwide is being readied for a deluge of data when the Large Hadron Collider starts up, marking a new phase in the use of the web.

The machine will slam subatomic particles called protons together to recreate conditions not seen since an eyeblink after the Big Bang of creation and explore new realms of nature, including finding the Higgs particle that plays a starring role in current theory, holding it together, and helping to endow matter with mass.

Around 300 computer centres in 50 countries will handle data from the vast atom smasher for the next decade, marking what will be the biggest computing exercise in history.

When the experiments get running at the LHC, the four great "eyes" of the machine start observing collisions, they will generate 15 million gigabytes of data every year, that is equivalent to one thousand times the information printed in the form of books annually.

Open Websites in Google Chrome from Firefox

If are using Firefox along side Google’s browser, this "Open in Google Chrome" extension might come handy - it lets you open web sites directly in Google Chrome from Firefox itself with a right click or via the Chrome button that’s near the Firefox address bar (optional).

Install “Open in Google Chrome” for Firefox 3

Download opengooglechrome.xpi on to your desktop and then drag it inside Firefox 3 much like what you did for Send to Google Docs.

Restart Firefox. Then go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Options and browse for the chrome.exe file on your Vista / XP / Windows 2000 machine.

In Windows XP, Google Chrome installs under \Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\ while in Windows Vista, Google Chrome installs in \Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\

Like IE-View, you may also configure this Google Chrome extension to open any website(s) directly in Chrome.

This is Eileen Clancy . . . The house where I-Witness Video is staying in St. Paul has been surrounded by police. We have locked all the doors

We are suffering a preemptive video arrest. For those that don't know, I-Witness Video was remarkably successful in exposing police misconduct and outright perjury by police during the 2004 RNC. Out of 1800 arrests, at least 400 were overturned based solely on video evidence which contradicted sworn statements which were fabricated by police officers. It seems that the house arrest we are now under and the possible threat of the seizure of our computers and video cameras is a result of the 2004 success.

We are asking the public to contact the office of St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman at 651-266-8510 to stop this house arrest, this gross intimidation by police officers, and the detention of media activists and reporters.

Digital Divide - Is it the Chicken or the Egg?

clipper's remarks: I've read a lot about the so called digital divide a lot in various news outlets and agree, it's definitely a real issue and one that needs to be addressed.

However, this article made me think whether or not having access to the Internet is the issue. Especially when I see the statistic that only 29% of people who haven't graduated high school have Internet access.

Is the real issue education? Is it not that some groups don't have access to the Internet, but that the lack of quality education they receive leads them to not realize or understand why access to information on the net is so valuable?

I don't know the answer to the question, but I do know our public school systems are terrible in many places. Maybe we need to focus on educating our youth. If we don't, even if they do get Internet access, what will they really do with it?

Overwhelmingly, these unconnected individuals tend to be minorities and people with low education levels. A recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that only 57 percent of African Americans and 37 percent of Hispanics have Internet access. And only 29 percent of people who have not graduated from high school are connected to the Internet.

There's been a lot of chatter over the years about the digital divide or the idea that there is a great chasm between people who have access to technology such as computers and the Internet, and those who do not. While some 68 percent of the U.S. population has access to the Internet via broadband or dial-up connections, there are still millions of people across the country who do not have any access at all.

Sony recalls 438,000 laptops on burn concern

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Japan's Sony Corp has launched a voluntary recall of 438,000 Vaio portable computers, citing a potential hazard that could cause the machines to overheat or possibly burn a user.

It is one of the biggest computer recalls since 2006 when Dell Inc recalled 4.1 million notebook computer batteries because they could overheat and catch fire.

Sony's recall affects 72,800 computers in the United States, a Sony spokesman said on Thursday.

MIT researchers may have found a way to overcome a key barrier to the advent of super-fast quantum computers, which could be powerful tools for applications such as code breaking.

One approach involves superconducting devices that, when cooled to temperatures of nearly absolute zero (-459 degrees F, -273 degrees C), can be made to behave like artificial atoms -- nanometer-scale "boxes" in which the electrons are forced to exist at specific, discrete energy levels (picture an elevator that can stop at the floors of a building but not in between). But traditional scientific techniques for characterizing -- and therefore better understanding -- atoms and molecules do not necessarily translate easily to artificial atoms, said William Oliver of MIT Lincoln Laboratory's Analog Device Technology Group and MIT's Research Laboratory for Electronics (RLE).

News of the recall of the Sony Vaio has prompted thousands of users to rush to the internet to see if their Sony Vaio is included in the recall. The recall occurred on Thursday, and according to a report mentioned in Rueters, includes 440,000 Sony Vaio TZ series laptop computers. This Sony Vaio recall aims to avert potential problems with overheating and short circuiting. Not the first recall of this magnitude for Sony, computer users are wondering if Sony is the best notebook choice after all.

TOKYO--Sony says it is recalling 440,000 units of Vaio laptop computers worldwide due to faulty parts that could trigger overheating.

Sony Corp. (SNE: 36.82, -0.84, -2.23%) said Thursday that the recalls involve 19 models of Vaio TZ laptop series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008, including three export models.

The Tokyo-based consumer electronics company says a faulty wiring connecting the main body of the laptop and its display could cause overheating near a power plug or the rim of the screen, sometimes distorting the shape of the computer.
