Skype: We didn't know about security issues

Skype's president said that the company was largely unaware of a major security breach affecting Skype users in China.

In a blog published Thursday, Josh Silverman, Skype's president, explained he did not realize that TOM-Skype, Skype's partner in China, was logging and storing users' instant messages that were deemed offensive by the Chinese government.

He said the company knew that instant-messaging chats were monitored by the government, as all communications in China are. And he explained that Skype disclosed this to users in 2006, explaining that a text filter was being used to block certain words in chat messages. But he added that his understanding was that messages deemed unsuitable were "simply discarded and not displayed or transmitted anywhere."

Silverman pointed out in his blog that TOM, like all other ISPs in China, is required by the Chinese government to monitor all communication.

But he tried to reassure Skype users that Skype's computer-to-computer voice calls are

secure.

Can machines think? That was the question posed by the great mathematician Alan Turing. Half a century later six computers are about to converse with human interrogators in an experiment that will attempt to prove that the answer is yes.

In the 'Turing test' a machine seeks to fool judges into believing that it could be human. The test is performed by conducting a text-based conversation on any subject. If the computer's responses are indistinguishable from those of a human, it has passed the Turing test and can be said to be 'thinking'.

But at 9am next Sunday, six computer programs - 'artificial conversational entities' - will answer questions posed by human volunteers at the University of Reading in a bid to become the first recognised 'thinking' machine.

If any program succeeds, it is likely to be hailed as the most significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence since the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.

Citroen's just gone up in our estimation -- way up. At the Paris Motor Show today, it announced it would be the first car manufacturer to build a car originally designed for a computer game -- a bleedin' computer game, we tell you.

The frankly dangerous-looking GTbyCitroen is the brainchild of Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauch, and Citroen's Takumi Yamamoto. It was first designed to hurtle around the virtual tracks of the PS3's Gran Turismo: Prologue, but Citroen -- presumably bored of making Picassos and C5s -- has decided to make one for real.

The former Democratic congresswoman from Georgia who now is the Green Party's candidate for president has claimed the government killed 5,000 prison inmates during Hurricane Katrina, dumping their bodies in a Louisiana swamp, according to a Fox News report.

Cynthia McKinney told a news conference in Oakland., Calif., Sunday she heard the story from the mother of a National Guard soldier, and she checked it with "insiders" who want to remain anonymous.

"And these were mostly males and her son was afraid to talk because he had signed a silence agreement," McKinney said, according to Fox News. "So he only complained to his mother. But the data was entered into a Pentagon computer."

The American military faces a growing threat of potentially fatal equipment failure—and even foreign espionage—because of counterfeit computer components used in warplanes, ships, and communication networks. Fake microchips flow from unruly bazaars in rural China to dubious kitchen-table brokers in the U.S. and into complex weapons. Senior Pentagon officials publicly play down the danger, but government documents, as well as interviews with insiders, suggest possible connections between phony parts and breakdowns.

In November 2005, a confidential Pentagon-industry program that tracks counterfeits issued an alert that "BAE Systems experienced field failures," meaning military equipment malfunctions, which the large defense contractor traced to

fake microchips. Chips are the tiny electronic circuits found in computers and other gear.

Microsoft has extended the availability of Windows XP on new PCs by six months, the company confirmed Friday.

Computer makers that "downgrade" machines from Windows Vista Business or Vista Ultimate to Windows XP Professional will be able to obtain media for the latter through the end of July 2009, a Microsoft spokeswoman said Friday.

The new date is a change in policy. Previously, Microsoft had planned to halt XP Professional media shipments to major computer makers after Jan. 31. 2009.

"As more customers make the move to Windows Vista, we want to make sure that they are making that transition with confidence and that it is as smooth as possible. Providing downgrade media for a few more months is part of that commitment," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

It's also possible that XP will be widely available long after July 31, 2009. "Downgrade rights do not expire," Microsoft's spokeswoman said Friday.
