Mystery of the 'couple' buried arm in arm 1,000 years ago: Not husband and wife but Saxon warriors

For a thousand years they have lain side by side in a rough earth grave, one throwing a skeletal arm across the other.

Believed to be Saxon warriors, they are thought to have died together and been buried together as brothers in arms.

Their return to the limelight after so many centuries comes as archaeologists work on a 90-acre site near Ramsgate in Kent before it is developed into a salad-growing complex.

At first they were taken to be a man and wife, buried some time during the Saxon period between 410 and 1066, but now that opinion has changed.

'The body on the right is definitely male.

'They are exceptionally tall, both over six feet. The one on the left has got some female traits to it but it does seem to be male.

Another poignant grave is from the Roman era and is that of a young girl - thought to be in her early teens - who died in childbirth.

To an outsider, it would seem hard to do, but an oil-rich town with zero debt on the day she was inaugurated mayor was left saddled with $22 million of debt by the time she moved away to become governor – especially since nothing was spent on things such as improving the city’s infrastructure or building a much-needed sewage treatment plant. So what did Mayor Palin spend the taxpayer’s money on, if not fixing streets and scrubbing sewage?

For starters, she remodelled her office. Several times over, as a matter of fact.

Then Palin spent $1 million on an unnecessary, new park that no one other than the contractors and Palin seemed to want. Next, Sarah doled out more than $15 million of taxpayer money for a sports complex that she shoved through even though the city did not own clear title to the land; now, seven years later, the matter is still in litigation and lawyer fees are said to be close to at least half of the original estimated price of the facility.

IBM will build the first scientific supercomputer several Petabytes

IBM has signed an agreement to develop the first system of calculating the agenda petabyte (1 million billion bytes) specially dedicated to scientific research open. Known as Blue Waters, the calculation system is being developed for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his centre NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications).

The system will be operational in 2011. It will use over 200 000 core processors, more than one petabyte of memory and more than 10 petabytes of disk storage.

“Blue Waters will be a unique national asset, which will have a profound impact on science and society,” said Thom Dunning, director of NCSA and professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois. “Scientists across the countries, they simulate new drugs or materials, weather, epidemics or complex systems such as power plants or aircraft, will have to make discoveries that we n’imaginons not even exist. ”

Known as "Visual DNA" these spectacular images are the data visualisation of sequenced animal and plant genes.

German creator Daniel Becker, explains how the process of translating DNA text into colourful symbols is not as complicated as it sounds.

"DNA art interprets the complex information of DNA with the help of symbols and colours," says the 29-year-old from Frankfurt.

"The result is a individual graphic pattern for any creature or plant.

"For the naked eye a DNA sequence is a string of thousands of those four letters.

"So I came up with the idea to interpret these genes into symbols and colours."

A Student of Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, Daniel also works as a graphic designer.

"They can use the graphics to print it on T-shirts, cups, use it as a poster.

Last week, Intel, Yahoo, HP, and an international trio of research institutions announced a joint cloud-computing research initiative. The ambitious six-site project is aimed at developing an Internet-based computer infrastructure stable enough to host companies' most critical data-processing tasks. The project also holds an unusual promise for advances in fields as diverse as climate change modeling and molecular biology.

The new array of six linked data centers, one operated by each project sponsor, will be one of the largest experiments to date focusing on cloud computing--an umbrella term for moving complex computing tasks, such as data processing and storage, into a network-connected "cloud" of external data centers, which might perform similar tasks for multiple customers.

The project's large scope will allow researchers to test and develop security, networking, and infrastructure components on a large scale simulating an open Internet environment.

What is it that distinguishes humans from other mammals? The answer to this question lies in the neocortex – the part of the brain responsible for sensory perceptions, conscious thought, and language. Humans have a considerably larger neocortex than other mammals, making it an ideal subject for the research of higher cognition.

The authors, Tamas, et al, point to an important role in chandelier cells – so-named for their structural resemblance to an old-fashioned candlestick.

This challenging method allowed them to measure the dynamic communication lines between neurons, illustrating how neurons interact and affect one another.

Whereas previously it was thought that neurons worked in groups to affect the brain, the authors show that a single chandelier cell can trigger multiple excitatory pyramidal cells – which make up the bulk of the cortex – and cause a chain reaction throughout the brain.

UC project puts Midwest mounds back on the map

More than 10 years ago, University of Cincinnati researcher John Hancock, professor of architecture in UC's top-ranked College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), began an ambitious, complex project using modern technology to electronically rebuild lost or damaged Native American monuments that once rivaled Stonehenge in their astronomical accuracy.

That electronic rebuilding project, known as EarthWorks, is now traveling museums across the Midwest – an area where, once, thousands of mounds and earthworks were built by Native American cultures in the form of geometric shapes, ringed hilltops or animal effigies (think Ohio's Serpent Mound or Fort Ancient).
