Circuit boards, switches, bytes, gigs...it all just runs together in my head. But when the techno aspect merges with the visual I can get a grip on it. Such is the case with Vomitsaw's clever conception of the circuit board skull bracelet. This is truly a cool idea that appeals to the masses, especially this time of year when skulls are so hip.

You will need:

Some circuit board

Wire

AV plugs

Some cleverness

But when it came down to an issue Heckman really cares about -- sending a daughter to college on $10.50 an hour -- her desire to see a woman reach the White House took a back seat to her depleted savings account.

"I have no retirement. With its bright colours and unusual patterns these canvasses are the latest
 examples of scientific art.

The artwork is made of up DNA symbols from animal and plant genes
 Photo: GB / Barcroft Media

Known as "Visual DNA" these spectacular images are the data visualisation of
 sequenced animal and plant genes.

German creator Daniel Becker, explains how the process of translating DNA text
into colourful symbols is not as complicated as it sounds.

"DNA art interprets the complex information of DNA with the help of symbols
and colours," says the 29-year-old from Frankfurt.

"The result is a individual graphic pattern for any creature or plant.

"For the naked eye a DNA sequence is a string of thousands of those four
 letters.

"So I came up with the idea to interpret these genes into symbols and
 colours."

A Student of Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, Daniel
also works as a graphic designer.

"They can use the graphics to print it on T-shirts, cups, use it as a poster.

But what happens when we we have the power to move time backwards? Undo decisions? Some daring new designers, such as Jonathan Blow, are letting us find out ...

Different media have different strengths. We go to novels for the way they can explore a character's inner life; we choose films for their visceral urgency. A great war film can convey the pure terror and chaos of the battlefield in a way that "War and Peace" never could for me. When it comes to videogames

some of the most interesting developments have been in creating complex new relationships between players, game worlds and the flow of time.

Arthur C. Clarke presents this unusual documentary on the mathematical discovery of the Mandelbrot Set (M-Set) in the visually spectacular world of fractal geometry. This show relates the science of the M-Set to nature in a way that seems to identify the hand of God in the design of the universe itself. Dr. Mandelbrot in 1980 discovered the infinitely complex geometrical shape called the Mandelbrot Set using a very simple equation with computers and graphics.

Tags: science, video, documentary, fractals

<clipSource>http://underdogcinema.com/sciencetechnology/fractals-the-colors-of-infinity/</clipSource>

Chandelier Cells Unveil Human Cognition

clipped by: Kelika
clipper's remarks: "By triggering specific chandelier cells, the authors were able to elicit a precisely timed chain of electrical events in the neocortex. Additionally, the authors found that the synaptic pathways between chandeliers and pyramid cells are incredibly strong – much stronger than has been recorded previously in other mammals. This suggests that humans do possess different types of cells, and that our higher cognition isn't due to having larger cells.

Although chandelier cells have been found in other species, they are more complex in humans. This raises the possibility that there are many things which attribute to higher cognition – different types of cells, and a complex circuitry, perhaps. This study by Tamas, et al, furthers the search for the answers to higher cognition, and more fully opens the door to questions of how our brains compare to those of other species."

Clip Source: www.sciencedaily.com

What is it that distinguishes humans from other mammals? The answer to this question lies in the neocortex – the part of the brain responsible for sensory perceptions, conscious thought, and language. Humans have a considerably larger neocortex than other mammals, making it an ideal subject for the research of higher cognition.

The authors, Tamas, et al, point to an important role in chandelier cells – so-named for their structural resemblance to an old-fashioned candlestick.

This challenging method allowed them to measure the dynamic communication lines between neurons, illustrating how neurons interact and affect one another.

Whereas previously it was thought that neurons worked in groups to affect the brain, the authors show that a single chandelier cell can trigger multiple excitatory pyramidal cells – which make up the bulk of the cortex – and cause a chain reaction throughout the brain.

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080902221739.htm</clipSource>

Rebuilding Ancient American Mounds

clipped by: cakebelly
clipper's remarks: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-08/uoc-upp082508.php

Clip Source: www.eurekalert.org

UC project puts Midwest mounds back on the map

More than 10 years ago, University of Cincinnati researcher John Hancock, professor of architecture in UC's top-ranked College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), began an ambitious, complex project using modern technology to electronically rebuild lost or damaged Native American monuments that once rivaled Stonehenge in their astronomical accuracy.

That electronic rebuilding project, known as EarthWorks, is now traveling museums across the Midwest – an area where, once, thousands of mounds and earthworks were built by Native American cultures in the form of geometric shapes, ringed hilltops or animal effigies (think Ohio's Serpent Mound or Fort Ancient).

<clipSource>http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-08/uoc-upp082508.php</clipSource>
