The free health fair will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Garden City Rescue Mission, 828 Fenwick St., and will feature education about nutrition, stress relief and H1N1. Dental hygiene students will present oral health education. Medical students will offer hand sanitizer, foot powder, socks and information about proper foot care. They also will provide Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-inspired Keep It With You temporary medical information forms

In a win for the little guy, the small Victorian town of Romsey has a won a fight against the introduction of 30 poker machines in the town's only pub.

After a marathon five-year battle, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal today ruled against the introduction of the machines.

"On balance, I have concluded the social impact of gaming machines at the hotel on the well-being of the community will be strongly negative," Tribunal president Justice Kevin Bell said.

Surveys had indicated up to 80 per cent of the town's population opposed the introduction of the machines at the hotel.

Macedon Ranges shire mayor John Letchford was ecstatic after the decision and said the shire would help other communities fighting against the introduction of poker machines.

"We feel vindicated in our stance with this long-going gaming machine issue and certainly the community has been heard," he said.

"It gives great substance and credibility to local government to be able to take up this particular fight

Not long ago, inside the quiet library of the Muslim Community Center here in Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C., Golam Akhter, a local Bangladeshi-American civil engineer, 67, got into a fierce debate with a young Muslim doctor over how to interpret the concept of “jihad” within Islam. Akhter argued, “Jihad means an inner struggle, fighting against corruption and injustice.”

The young doctor responded. “That’s not a correct interpretation. Jihad means holy war. When your religion isn’t safe, you have to fight for it. If someone attacks you, you must fight them. That is jihad. You can kill someone who is harming you.”

The conversation would be just another theological debate, interesting but irrelevant, except that the doctor was Maj. Nidal Hasan, 39, the gunman in the tragic Fort Hood rampage. After being posted to Walter Reed Hospital as a psychiatrist, Hasan called the Muslim Community Center his local mosque. It’s just a short drive away from Walter Reed.

SEATTLE When some 600 atheists, agnostics and other nonreligious folks gather in Seattle starting Friday for a Freedom From Religion Foundation convention, there will be an emphatically nonprayer breakfast.

Not to mention hundreds of provocative bus ads, including one with Santa saying: "Yes, Virginia ... there is no God."

The ads may seem in-your-face to some. But the Wisconsin-based organization has never shied from controversy. It has filed lawsuits on state-church separation issues and sponsored "Imagine No Religion" and "Reason's Greetings" billboards in Seattle; Olympia,. Wash.; and other cities.

Last winter, it put up an anti-religion sign in the Washington state Capitol building that raised a furor, eventually involving FOX News personality Bill O'Reilly and prompting thousands of phone calls to the governor's office.

Spears, axes used in 500-person AFL brawl

More than 500 people wielding axes and spears turned on each other during an Australian Rules football game at a remote Northern Territory community.

Police claim the fight erupted on the field when an opposing player threw the football at another player who had been awarded a free kick.

"Another player then became involved and the situation deteriorated into a large scale disturbance and the football match was called off," a Northern Territory police spokeswoman said.

"However, the disturbance degenerated when community members allegedly began producing weapons including axes and spears."

While no arrests were made, police have confirmed a full investigation will be carried out to identify those people who were armed with weapons.

Elders in the Gulf of Carpentaria are expected to hold meetings with the community in an attempt to defuse and resolve issues between the families involved.
