Wal*Mart shutting down DRM server, nuking your music collection -- only people who pay for music risk losing it to DRM shenanigans

But don't worry, this will never ever happen to all those other DRM companies -- unlike little fly-by-night mom-and-pop operations like Wal*Mart, the DRM companies are rock-ribbed veterans of commerce and industry, sure to be here for a thousand years. So go on buying your Audible books, your iTunes DRM songs, your Zune media, your EA games... None of these companies will ever disappear, nor will the third-party DRM suppliers they use. They are as solid and permanent as Commodore, Atari, the Soviet Union, the American credit system and the Roman Empire.

Boy, the entertainment industry sure makes a good case for ripping them off, huh? Buy your media and risk having it confiscated by a DRM-server shutdown. Take it for free and keep it forever.

The 419Eater website chronicles the incredible story of a guy who baits "Nigerian Letter" scammers by telling them he has no time to help them free their dead relatives' seized assets because he is so busy sending out $150,000 scholarships for talented carvings to display in his galleries. He actually convinces a 419 scammer to produce a detailed replica of a Commodore 64 computer with the lure of a big cash payout -- then blows him off with a twist ending worthy of The Big Con. Commodore, un marchio storico per gli over 35, in occasione dell'IFA 2008 ha presentato il netbook UMMD 8010/F.

A differenza dei concorrenti (Asus eeePC in testa e l’MSI WindPC ), l’UMMD 8010/F si affida ad una cpu C7-M di VIA con frequenza di 1.6 GHz.

le altre caratteristiche sono: ram 1 GB, hard disk da 80 GB e display LCD da 10".

L’ultimo nato di Commodore non dispone di Bluetooth se non come opzione ma ha il Wi-Fi nativo.

Il prezzo sarà di circa € 400, e verrà commercializzato solo in Inghilterra, almeno per i primi tempi.

Preservation Nation Covers Perrysburg School Demolition

After years of debate, the fate of a historic school in Perrysburg, Ohio, was decided last month. On June 20, the board of education voted to demolish about half of the Commodore Building, an amalgamation of structures built between 1894 and 1991.

The future of the building has been in question since it closed to students in 2002. Various plans for the site, now used as offices, have been proposed since then, ranging from demolishing the whole property to reworking the space into condominiums.

But last month the school board accepted a bid of $152,000 to demolish large sections of the 117,000-square-foot building, including the 1894 section and a 1916 addition.

The decision will preserve a gymnasium constructed in 1957, a cafeteria built in 1991, and a building from 1931 that currently houses the school district's administrative offices.

Phil Pelling, of Honda Cars Newmarket, says his dealership will still consider taking a late model V8 Holden Commodore as a trade-in, but says its value has dropped 25 per cent in the past couple of months as petrol prices have surged.

The number of people who can afford the petrol for large-engine cars has decreased markedly, Pelling says.

Petrol prices are already at record high levels in New Zealand and, as the value of the Kiwi dollar slides, economists are predicting they will keep rising even if the international oil market stabilises.

Tony Alexander, Bank of New Zealand's chief economist, says a further rise of at least 10c a litre looks probable, and that would push 91-octane petrol to at least $2.23 a litre.

Goetz Neugebauer, of scooter store Scooter e Motion in Auckland's Mt Eden, reports a "significant increase" in scooter sales over the past two months despite the onset of winter, as petrol prices have left motorists cold.

HMS Fearless (L10) was a Royal Navy ship which served from 1965 until 2002. One of two from the Landing Platform Dock (LPD) class she was based in HMNB Portsmouth and saw service around the world over her 37 year life. As one of the vessels committed to Operation Corporate, the 1982 Falklands War, Fearless, fitted with modern satellite communications equipment, hosted the staff of the amphibious force commander Commodore Amphibious Warfare (COMAW), Commodore Michael Clapp and Commanding Officer 3 Commando Brigade, Brigadier Julian Thompson and his staff, as well as elements of the landing force. On 17 December 2007, Fearless was towed to Ghent in Belgium to be broken up.

Tragic crash in the King Valley

A 19 year old Glenrowanwoman was killed, and two male teenagers injured when their vehicle left the road on a sweeping right-hand bend and hit trees in the King Valley last night.

Jessica Campbell died at the scene, while Dylan Bergamin - the 18 year old son of missing Wangaratta woman Kath Bergamin - and a 17 year old male from Wangaratta, were both injured.

The exact circumstances of the crash are still being investigated by members of the Major Collision Investigation Unit, who arrived at the scene from Melbourne late last night.

However, police have said they believe Ms Campbell was a front seat passenger.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lindsay Cummins of Wangaratta police this morning said it appears the late model Holden Commodore left the Upper King River Road, about 3.5km south west of Cheshunt, travelling towards Lake William Hovell, between 6.30pm and 6.45pm.

In this Super Techies interview, I talk with Marc Benioff about his career in the software industry. Benioff is the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Salesforce.com, which has led the business software-as-a-service revolution with its CRM-based platform. Salesforce.com is expecting to reach the $1 billion revenue threshold in its 2009 fiscal year, ending January 31, 2009.

In the interview, Benioff discusses his early work developing games for the TRS 80, Apple II, and Commodore 64, and his turn as a summer intern at Apple in 1984, coding in assembly language for the Macintosh.

Benioff also shares what he learned working alongside Oracle founder Larry Ellison during his 13 years at the company. In addition, he outlines the origins of Salesforce.com, which he started in 1999, and offers some insight into his aggressive marketing strategies and recipe for business success.

Just when you think all of your nostalgic fantasies have all been fulfilled, along comes Nintendo with a little extra joy for your retro heart. That "little extra" in this case happens to be Commodore 64 games for your Wii. You read that correctly, people -- C64 games are headed to the system's Virtual Console, starting with International Karate and Uridium, which will run you 500 Wii points apiece. Right now, the rollout appears to be taking place in Europe only, though we suspect it'll head over to our shores sooner rather than later.
