clipper's remarks: I don't know much about financial institutions in Britain, but I found it encouraging that they still apparently have building societies.

In South Africa all the major building societies demutualised about 20 years ago, suckering their members with stories of "windfalls", which they have since lost many times over in the bank charges levied by the commercial banks that replaced the building societies.

Am I right in surmising that Northern Rock, which recently had a big bail out at the expense of the taxpayers, was also one of these demutualised ex-building societies?

And what are these Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac that have had similar bail-outs in the US? The first sounds like an escort agency rather than a financial institution. I realise that "image" is deceptive, but who in their right mind would lend to or borrow from an institution with a name like that?

Nationwide is expected to announce that it is taking over two smaller rivals in a deal that will value the building society at £191 billion.

However, the two smaller societies' 910,000 members are unlikely to receive a windfall because the Derbyshire and Cheshire will retain their own brands and branches.

No money will change hands in the deal, which must be approved by the societies' members. The three societies will together have almost 16 million members.

But experts said that the deal was unlikely to kick off a wave of consolidation because most societies had business models that could steer a path out of the economic doldrums.

Nationwide, which took over the Portman Building Society last year, has benefited from the so-called flight to quality that occurred after the collapse of Northern Rock.

Savings fund 71 per cent of Nationwide's business, which means that it is less reliant on borrowing from the wholesale market.

The SL Bar Association is offering a free California CLE seminar in Second Life Tuesday, September 9 at 12:00 Noon, Pacific, at the Association’s in-world headquarters (SLURL). The seminar will focus on trademarks, and will be presented by SLBA President-Elect Stephen Wu (SL’s ‘Legal Writer’).

Stephen Wu is a partner in the Silicon Valley law firm Cooke Kobrick & Wu LLP, and is Secretary of the American Bar Association Section of Science and Technology Law. He advises clients concerning e-discovery, electronic records retention, digital evidence, and legal matters relating to information security, privacy, and ecommerce. How dangerous is air travel?

Spanair jet crashed in Madrid killing 154 passengers and crew. Days later a further 68 people were lost in Kyrgyzstan and this week 168 Ryanair passengers endured a terrifying emergency descent from 30,000ft when their jet suddenly lost cabin pressure. Such a spate of incidents inevitably leads the travelling public to ask: how safe is it to fly?

According to the statistics, travelling in a commercial airliner is becoming progressively safer. The accident rate in 1996 for western-built jet aircraft was 1.3 crashes per million flights, which nearly halved to 0.75 crashes per million flights last year. The fatality rate has been falling too, from 1,035 deaths in 2005 to 692 in 2007. In comparison, just under 3,000 people were killed on British roads last year.

The main warning is that some continents have better safety records than others

in Africa is just over 4 per million flights

north America's accident rate is at 0.09 flights per million

EPA tightens lawn mower, motor boat emission rules

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Exhaust-spewing lawn mowers and speed boats will get a green make-over under tough new rules from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency designed to reduce smog and save millions of gallons of gasoline.

Gas-powered engines in lawn and garden equipment will be required to cut smog-forming emissions by 35 percent, while engines in personal watercraft will have to cut smog-forming emissions by 70 percent and reduce carbon monoxide emissions by 20 percent.

It's the EPA's latest step to reduce emissions from nonroad sources. The agency previously set new standards for farm and construction equipment, recreational vehicles, locomotives and commercial marine craft.

"When fully implemented, this rule will be the air pollution equivalent of removing one out of every five cars and trucks on the road," said Bill Becker, executive director of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies.

To some, the other idea of Gene Kelly performing an array of modern dance moves may be anathema but even they will have to concede that the ad is a technological triumph as footage of Kelly from Singing In The Rain is seamlessly melded with new footage to create a remix that is simply staggering.

In any case, Gene Kelly was very progressive in his thinking on dance and if this ad has him turning in his grave, it will surely be because he is trying to emulate the elaborate dance moves that the masters of digital manipulation show him achieving in this terrific commercial.

As a captivating piece of film, this ad is an undoubted success but what makes it especially admirable is that, unlike so many car commercials, the striking imagery is made relevant by the central concept – namely, that the new Golf GTi is “the original, updated”.

Ballot measure 4, which survived a challenge that went all the way to the state Supreme Court to remain on the state's primary ballot, would have prohibited large metal mines from contaminating salmon streams and drinking water sources. Though by law the ballot measure couldn't name a specific project, everyone knew it was aimed at the proposed Pebble Mine, which if developed as planned would be North America's largest open pit gold mine, also mining copper and molybdenum (a crucial element in steel).

The remake of the commercial, which was due to be premiered on British television on Friday night, shows the gorilla playing along to Welsh rocker Bonnie Tyler’s classic Total Eclipse of the Heart.

The original Dairy Milk advert featuring the Phil Collins track In The Air Tonight became a cult classic on its release last year, and was viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube.

Tyler will be hoping for a similar career boost to the one enjoyed by Collins, whose 1981 hit reached No 9 in the UK download chart on the back of the advert’s popularity.

A Glass and Half Full Productions, the agency behind the drumming gorilla, said they were inspired to release a new version by parodies and remixes of the original posted on YouTube and sent in by fans.
