The current salary of the president has recently been doubled to $400,000, to go with a $50,000 expense account, a generous pension and several other benefits. Has the remuneration improved?
Making a comparison using the CPI for 1790 shows that $25,000 corresponds to over $585,000 today, so the recent raise means current presidents have an equal command over consumer goods as the Father of the Country. When comparing Washington's salary to an unskilled worker, or the measure of average income, GDP per capita, then the comparable numbers are $11 and $24 million. Granted that would not put him in the ranks of the top 25 executives today that make over $200 million. It would, however, be many times more than any elected official in this country is paid today.

Most indices are measured as the price of a "bundle" of goods and services that a representative group buys or earns

Cygwin users will absolutely love PuTTYcyg. This lets you use PuTTY as a local cygwin terminal. If you use cygwin on your windows, I’m sure you’ll hate the default MS-DOS looking cygwin window. Using PuTTYcyg, you can run cygwin inside PuTTY. I love this add-on and use it for my cygwin on Windows.

On PuTTYcyg, click on cygterm radio button in the Connection type. Enter - (hyphen) in the “Command (use - for login shell“, to connect to the cygwin on the windows laptop using PuTTY as shown below.

The Simple Backup Configuration Program (SBCP). This wizard asks you a few simple questions about what to back up, where to back it up, etc. It records these answers in some configuration files and sets up automatic backups for you.
The backup script, bkup. This shell script actually performs the backups based on the options you set in SBCP. It has no user interface – it is meant to be run automatically by the Linux scheduler, cron, or manually from a command line.

You might be wondering, “What’s a script?” It’s just a small program – it just happens to be constructed from (in this case) Bash shell commands.

Computer viruses make it to orbit

A computer virus is alive and well on the International Space Station (ISS).

Nasa has confirmed that laptops carried to the ISS in July were infected with a virus known as Gammima.AG.

The worm was first detected on earth in August 2007 and lurks on infected machines waiting to steal login names for popular online games.

Nasa said it was not the first time computer viruses had travelled into space and it was investigating how the machines were infected.

Orbital outbreak

Space news website SpaceRef broke the story about the virus on the laptops that astronauts took to the ISS.

Nasa told SpaceRef that no command or control systems of the ISS were at risk from the malicious program.

The laptops infected with the virus were used to run nutritional programs and let the astronauts periodically send e-mail back to Earth.

The laptops carried by astronauts reportedly do not have any anti-virus software on them to prevent infection.

Thousands of cameras to watch over Beijing's buses: State press

Two others were killed in apparently co-ordinated attacks on two buses in the southwestern city of Kunming in July.

A little-known separatist group from China's far northwest Xinjiang region claimed responsibility for the attacks, but their statements have been impossible to verify.

Despite the security concerns, the China Daily quoted one Beijing resident as saying he did not want the cameras on the buses.

"The cameras will make me feel uncomfortable. It will give me a feeling of being watched all the time," Liu Yi, a museum employee, was quoted as saying.

China's communist authorities already use extensive methods to monitor the nation's 1.3 billion people in an effort to stop anyone expressing discontent with the government.

Dissidents are kept under constant surveillance, mobile phones are monitored and the Internet is strictly censored. Security cameras also monitor many public areas.

BEIJING - Thousands of state-of-the-art video cameras will be installed on buses in Beijing in the latest effort to ensure security and monitor the public, state press reported on Wednesday.

All buses that ply the route along Chang'an Avenue, one of Beijing's main thoroughfares that runs past the politically sensitive Tiananmen Square, will have the cameras, the China Daily said.

In total, more than 1,400 buses in Beijing will each be fitted with four video cameras, the paper quoted Wang Zheng, an official with the company that is making them, as saying.

Unlike older versions of cameras already on some buses, the new ones will be able to transmit information instantly to a public security command centre, Wang said.

"These new vehicles can effectively protect passengers and the vehicle itself from harm," Wang said.

The move to increase security on Beijing's bus fleet comes after a bomb blast on a bus in Shanghai in April killed three people.

If you have a need to create a self-extracting archive of compressed files and can't get your hands on IZArc or another similar tool - (like in those rare cases you can't get to the Internet) - - or perhaps you can't install a third-party tool on your servers...then you can use the built-in Windows command - 'IExpress.exe'.

Bill Clinton to some extent continued that pattern, although he may have smoothed out the edges of it. And George Bush took Ronald Reagan’s insight and ran it over a cliff. And so I think the simple way of telling the story is that when Bill Clinton said the era of big government is over, he wasn’t arguing for an era of no government. So what we need to bring about is the end of the era of unresponsive and inefficient government and short-term thinking in government, so that the government is laying the groundwork, the framework, the foundation for the market to operate effectively and for every single individual to be able to be connected with that market and to succeed in that market. And it’s now a global marketplace.

It is entirely apropos at this time, as next week, August 31, my partner Arnold and I are getting legally married here in our home city of Montreal. Same-sex marriage became legal in Canada in 2005. We waited until this year, because Sept 10th shall mark the 25th anniversary of our original unification ceremony we celebrated in Boston in 1983. What better way to renew our vows than to do so while finally getting married legally, in a country that recognizes and honours our relationship?

There are plenty of reasons not to tie the knot. Like many men, I had always been in fierce and firm command of them all. First off, as someone who had been a defensive single most of my adult life, I still believe that solitude makes you a deeper person, not a lesser one. So I felt kind of guilty for being in a couple.

Then there’s the fact that marriage often lasts about as long as a Botox injection. And what is marriage anyway but (if I may be so pretentious) a hetero-normative institution that clumsily mixes property and the State with the divine and ethereal ideals of love?

Matyas Eorsi, an envoy from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, was initially refused entry to Gori on August 20, before the decision was reversed. In a blow to local sensitivities, the governor of Shida Kartli, Lasha Vardzelashvili, was detained for two hours by Russian forces after trying to secure a humanitarian aid convoy’s passage through a Russian checkpoint.

The Georgian government announced that the Russian Embassy in Tbilisi has notified it that "to arrange civilized movement throughout Gori," information about "delegation members, travel objectives and duration, transport vehicles and itinerary" must now first be submitted to the Russian mission in Tbilisi. The note appears to refer to both diplomats and non-diplomats, including humanitarian aid workers. The information will be relayed to the Russian defense ministry, the note continues, "in order to give respective instructions to the peacekeeping command, which will further ensure unhindered movement."

The Georgian government, however, has termed the requirements a violation of international law based "on Soviet-imperialist traditions."

At the same time, Russian forces demonstrate no inclination to withdraw from the positions in Georgia that they currently hold

The continuing Russian presence in Gori appears to be hampering humanitarian aid efforts.

clipper's remarks: The VMC is operated by the Mars Express Flight Control Team, based at ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany. This activity is conducted on a 'best-effort, last-priority' basis given the availability of planning time, command upload time and data down-link capacity.

This is a unique situation, as Flight Control Teams for ESA missions usually do not 'operate' payload instruments; this is done by dedicated, specialised science teams. But the VMC is different: it had a purely operational purpose (successfully completed in 2003 with Beagle's separation) and as such it is not operated by scientists, but by flight controllers.

22 August 2008 The Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) is mounted on Mars Express, ESA's deep-space probe now orbiting the Red Planet. It originally provided simple, low-tech images of Beagle lander separation, and is now back in action as the 'Mars Webcam'. It's not a scientific instrument, but it does provide fantastic views of Mars - including crescent views of the planet not obtainable from Earth.

What Makes A Good CEO?

So it’s important to observe them in the CEO role. Do they communicate well? Do they excel at having difficult face to face conversations with their team and their investors? Do they hire well? Do they move quickly to get rid of problem employees? Do they think about the people side of the business most of the time? Do they have a sense of urgency? Do they command the respect and loyalty of the entire team?

Those are the kinds of things I look for in “long term” CEOs. Of course they need to be able to set the long term strategy and vision and hold the company on that line. And they need to be able to raise capital and manage a Board and investor group. But frankly I think that many young founders are pretty good at those things. It’s the human piece of the equation that is so hard and so few get right.
