Being fat and lazy cat, Garfield is also portrayed as cynical, sarcastic, sadistic and pessimistic. He loves to destroy stuff, to maul the mailman and to torment his "colleague" pet Odie. He has comments sharp as a knife, usually on Jon being unable to find a date. But he has also his soft side, which is reserved for food, sleep and his teddy bear.

I have spent most of the past 15 years in the dark side of the rising sun. Until three years ago, I was a crime reporter for the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest newspaper, and covered a roster of characters that included serial killers who doubled as pet breeders, child pornographers who abducted junior high-school girls, and the John Gotti of Japan.

Most Americans think of Japan as a law-abiding and peaceful place, as well as our staunch ally, but reporting on the underworld gave me a different perspective. Mobs are legal entities here. Their fan magazines and comic books are sold in convenience stores, and bosses socialize with prime ministers and politicians. And as far as the United States is concerned, Japan may be refueling U.S. warships at sea, but it's not helping us fight our own battles against organized crime -- a realization that led to my biggest scoop.

4. Bad News for CNN — and Its Anchors

CNN hit an all-time competitive low in October, with three of its four prime-time shows finishing last in the ratings among the four cable news networks.

The pioneer all-news cable network's programs airing between 7 and 11 p.m. lagged behind not only those on Fox News and MSNBC, but also CNN's sister network HLN, formerly Headline News.

CNN's prime-time ratings are down 22 percent from 2007.

"In an era when the relationship between the White House and Fox News is making headlines, and when the ideological rivalry between MSNBC on the left and Fox News on the right is commanding the spotlight, CNN has little from a news angle to stir consistent interest from viewers," The New York Times observed.

The only prime-time CNN show that did not finish last was "Larry King Live." It finished third.

Adding insult to injury, two CNN anchors recently suffered "humiliating defeats" on "Celebrity Jeopardy," NewsBusters reported.
