AMY GOODMAN: There were a number of preemptive raids throughout this weekend. As they were taking place, thousands of journalists were making the trip from Denver, where they were covering the Democratic National Convention, to here in St. Paul to cover the Republicans. One of those who just happened to be on our flight was Jon Stewart of Comedy Central’s fake news program The Daily Show. I caught up with him next to baggage claim at the Minneapolis airport.

JON STEWART: I thought it was a reasonable flight.

AMY GOODMAN: You enjoyed the mixed nuts. Is that how you refer to your fellow passengers?

JON STEWART: That is how I refer—well, when you go to a convention, it’s really the only way to refer to your fellow passengers. But it was nice to see everybody rolling on. You were just checking off organizations—AP, New York Times, radio, Democracy Now!

AMY GOODMAN: What if the plane had gone down?

JON STEWART: American discourse would have risen. I can’t even imagine the depths.

Study: Late-night comics lay off Obama

A hilarious new study of late-night political jokes, due to be released later today, finds the network comedians clearly avoiding humor about Democratic candidate Barack Obama, while piling the jokes on President Bush and Sens. John McCain and Hillary Clinton.

From January through the end of July, the Center for Media and Public Affairs watched Conan, Leno, Letterman, Colbert and Stewart to examine the percentage of jokes for each candidate. On network late-night shows, there were 169 jokes about Obama, compared to 328 for McCain. On Comedy Central, however, the difference between Obama and McCain was close, with 207 and 201 jokes, respectively.

Let's face it.... "white haired dude" is just funnier than "black guy".

Comedy Festival Teams With Comedy Central

The cable network Comedy Central has announced a multiyear deal with the New York Comedy Festival. The festival, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary, will take place Nov. 5 to 9 in several New York City locations.

Singer and Songwriter Legend Isaac Hayes Died Today

clipper's remarks: He appeared in episodes of The A-Team and Miami Vice, though his acting wasn't limited to the small screen. Hayes also had roles in films such as Shaft (1971), Escape from New York (1981), I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988) and Johnny Mnemonic (1995).

In a tragic twist of fate, Hayes most recently filmed a small role playing himself in the upcoming movie Soul Man, starring Bernie Mac, who died yesterday at the age of 50 from pneumonia.

Hayes is survived by his wife, 12 children and 16 grandchildren.

It's another sad day in Hollywood.

E! News has confirmed that Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer and songwriter Isaac Hayes passed away early Sunday morning in Memphis, Tenn., at the age of 65. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Hayes made history when he won the 1972 Oscar for Best Original Song for the theme song to Shaft, becoming the first African-American to win an Academy Award in a non-acting category. He also won two Grammy Awards that year for his musical work on the film. A third Grammy followed in 1973 for the album "Black Moses" and he was eventually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Hayes' career experienced a resurgence in the late 1990s when he provided the voice of Chef on the hit Comedy Central series South Park. He played the smooth-talking, ladies-lovin' chef from 1997 to 2006, until he clashed with the show's creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, over the show's treatment of Scientology.

King of The Hill

Created by Beavis and Butt-Head’s Mike Judge and The Simpsons’ Greg Daniels, the weekly, half-hour animated series King of the Hill was a genial “redneck” comedy set in the fictional burg of Arlen, TX. The central character was Hank Rutherford Hill, a 40-year-old salesman for the Strickland Propane Company. Staunchly conservative and fiercely macho, Hank might have been described as the head of the Hill household were it not for his iron-willed wife Peggy, a substitute teacher. Also living under Hank Hill’s roof was his 12-year-old son Bobby, an overweight underachiever who was never quite able to live up to Hank’s lofty standards of manhood; and Hank and Peggy’s niece Luane Platter, who’d been living with the Hills since her trailer-park mom killed her dad during a brouhaha over “that last beer.”

The headlines are enough to give some Americans the queasy feeling their country is being sold out from under them. "It's the End of an Empire Sale and everything must go!" comedian Lewis Black said on Comedy Central's The Daily Show. "We're so hard up for cash we're dismantling America and selling it for scrap." He cited the Anheuser sale as well as this month's $800 million purchase by the Abu Dhabi Investment Council of a 90% stake in New York's Chrysler Building.

Rush to make rare TV performance on 'Colbert'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rush will be appearing on "The Colbert Report," and it's not Limbaugh.

The Canadian band Rush, which hasn't performed on U.S. television in more than three decades, will play their classic "Tom Sawyer" on the Comedy Central show Wednesday (11:30 p.m. EST). The Geddy Lee-led trio, which is currently on tour, hasn't played on U.S. television since 1975.

Rush is only the latest act to perform on "The Report," which has steadily edged closer to "Ed Sullivan Show" territory. With increasingly frequent musical performances, "The Report" has grown a variety-show impulse, evident in other upcoming bookings.

The Stephen Colbert-hosted comedy show was originally launched as a parody of conservative political punditry — and shows like "The O'Reilly Factor" do not make a habit of hosting music performances.

No joke! Kimmel, Silverman split after 5 years

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and his comedienne girlfriend Sarah Silverman have called it quits after five years together according to Vanity Fair.

The magazine's blog VF Daily reports that Kimmel's representative Lewis Kay and Silverman's rep Amy Zvi both confirmed the two are no longer dating. The reps issued a joint statement saying, "Jimmy and Sarah have will have no further comment."

Kimmel is the host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on ABC. Silverman stars in "The Sarah Silverman Program" on Comedy Central.

The couple scored hits on YouTube this year when both made mock music videos professing their "love" for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the online video-sharing Web site, owned by Google, has to turn over all its user logs to Viacom, the mega-corporation that owns MTV, Paramount Pictures, Comedy Central and VH1, among others.
