As reported yesterday by “Archangel” and the Northeast Intelligence Network, an internet message offering a $50,000 bounty on the head of Columbus-area Pastor Rod Parsley for defaming Islam appeared earlier this week on the notorious “Ekhlass” online forum. Parsley is the pastor of World Harvest Church.

The complicity of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), particularly the Ohio chapter, in this violent threat must be noted. Since May, CAIR has waged a media campaign against evangelical pastors, particularly Pastor Parsley, and made a number of statements stoking the flames of Christophobic bigotry (statements, by the way, given plenty of attention by the Columbus Dispatch). The campaign by CAIR has attempted to marginalize evangelicals Christians by seeking to silence any criticism of the wave of violence caused by Islamic radicalism all over the world.

At 12:15 p.m. yesterday, as the United States bombed Afghanistan for a second day, a sequined Liza Minnelli took the stage at the White House to sing a song, moments after President Bush signed a Columbus Day proclamation.

The everything-is-normal image of calm resolution, punctuated by calls of patriotism and unity from the White House, were in sharp contrast to the images from halfway around the world -- angry anti-American mobs and fuzzy, green TV footage of bombs dropping.

The message at home is: We're doing the right thing, so carry on with your lives. And the message to Arab countries is: We're fighting terrorism, not Islam.

But no matter how many packaged meals the United States drops or how many assurances it gives that this isn't a war against Afghans, many in the Middle East remain unconvinced.

And the reasons are absurd. If a teenager had a malfunctioning liver, only religious weirdos would say to keep the child off the medication. But when a child's brain malfunctions and there is is a medication that can help, many people cry foul and become suspicious. Why? We are only talking about organs of the body. Just as yellowing skin can be a symptom of a malfunctioning liver, so depression can be a symptom of a malfunctioning brain. The meds can save lives.

A spike in U.S. teen suicides in 2004 -- sharpest increase in the past 15 years -- appears to have persisted into 2005, researchers said.

Jeff Bridge of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus said researchers have identified what may be an emerging crisis, but the next step is to figure out why. One answer may lie in the prescription of antidepressant medication. Because of concerns over side effects, the number of teens prescribed antidepressants has dropped by as much as 20 percent.

"The vast majority of young people who complete suicide have some sort of psychiatric disorder. Most commonly depression or some mood disorder," Dr. John Campo also of Nationwide Children's Hospital said. "Kids who need the medicine most may not be getting it."

Question: Are you offended by the phrase "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

Palin: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I'll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

The pledge, of course, was not written until 1892 and the words "under God" were not added until the 1950s. From Wikipedia:

The Knights of Columbus in New York City felt that the pledge was incomplete without any reference to a deity. Appealing to the authority of Abraham Lincoln, the Knights felt that the words "under God" which were from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address were most appropriate to add to the Pledge. In New York City on April 22, 1951, the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus adopted a resolution to amend their recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at the opening of each of the meetings of the 800 Fourth Degree Assemblies of the Knights of Columbus by addition of the words "under God" after the words "one nation."

HARTFORD, Conn. — For school bus driver Jamille Aine, a cold is more than an inconvenience. His employer does not offer paid sick days, so if he can't shake the bug, he may not be able to pay his bills.

About 46 million U.S. workers lack paid sick days, but lawmakers in 12 states — including California, Connecticut, Minnesota and West Virginia — have proposed legislation in the past year that would require businesses to provide them.

Dale Butland of Ohioans for Healthy Families, an advocacy group pushing a November ballot initiative that would require employers to offer paid sick days, said the effort picked up steam in Columbus and other state capitals because federal legislation has stalled.

"This is the next frontier in assuring workplaces are safe," said Kate Kahan, director of the work and family program at the Washington-based National Partnership for Women & Families,

It's probably too late to save Molly Stark hospital

Behind its towering brick walls, the pillars and arches adorned with marble and ornate stone decorations is a Molly Stark hospital that many wouldn't recognize.

Age, water leaks and arson have rotted Molly Stark from the inside. Ribbons of old paint stream from the ceilings and walls. Nearly a foot of black ash from the latest arson carpets the floor of a first-floor hallway. And patches of moss grow on the terrazzo flooring where metal-framed beds once held ill patients.

Visitors now must wear protective masks to avoid breathing in toxic fibers from potentially exposed asbestos.

Well beyond repair and a drain on Stark County finances, the building, at 7900 Columbus Rd. NE, must be demolished and the property sold.

The visions never materialized, sabotaged by the estimated high cost — roughly $2 million — to remove asbestos, commonly found in thermal insulation, drywall, plaster and terrazzo flooring.

Columbus' Franklin Park Conservatory's Palm House Illumined

Internationally renowned award-winning artist James Turrell followed a city council representative and a Franklin County Commissioners representative and Franklin Park Director Bruce Harkey, to the podium and gave a short speech while behind him the first ever illumination of the Conservatory’s 112 year-old historic glass Palm House glowed colorfully. This permanent installation will perform each evening beginning at dusk and can be viewed from the Grand Mallway west of the Palm House or as you crane your neck driving down East Broad Street.

This was a fantastic event with, I’d guess, maybe 1,000 people coming out and viewing the illumination and checking out the Conservatory’s newly opened rooftop decks, bridal garden and event space. I’m impressed with the event and with Franklin Park’s $20 Million Dollar Growth by Design expansion and renovation plans.
