While Massachusetts recipients of federal stimulus money collectively report 12,374 jobs saved or created, a Globe review shows that number is wildly exaggerated. Organizations that received stimulus money miscounted jobs, filed erroneous figures, or claimed jobs for work that has not yet started.

One of the largest reported jobs figures comes from Bridgewater State College, which is listed as using $77,181 in stimulus money for 160 full-time work-study jobs for students. But Bridgewater State spokesman Bryan Baldwin said the college made a mistake and the actual number of new jobs was “almost nothing.’’ Bridgewater has submitted a correction, but it is not yet reflected in the report.

The federal stimulus report for Massachusetts has so many errors, missing data, or estimates instead of actual job counts that it may be impossible to accurately tally how many people have been employed by the massive infusion of federal money.

A good question given that many baby boomer parents are doing just that for their 20-something kids by paying for college, summer overseas adventures, and even post-graduation apartments. Sure, times are tough, but what happened to independence? To sinking or swimming on your own? Or to just plain hard work and living within your own means (and not your parents')?

Gap year

A gap year (also known as year abroad, year out, year off, deferred year, bridging year, time off and time out) is a term that refers to a prolonged period (often, but not always, a year) between a life stage. The most popular gap years are taken between school and university or college.

Some students spend the time traveling, others spend the time working, and many combine these into an international working holiday. A popular option for gap year students, also known as "gappers", is international volunteering. In the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, a great number of the volunteers who helped in South Asia were on a gap year.^[1]

He spoke out against the government's decision to toughen penalties for possessing marijuana and argued that the drug is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol.

Three more quit over Nutt sacking

Three more scientists have resigned from the UK drug advisory body after the home secretary sacked of its chief advisor, Professor David Nutt, for disagreeing with government policy on marijuana.

The trio quit after a meeting with Home Secretary Alan Johnson that was called to reassure them that their independence would not be compromised, according to the BBC.

According to the BBC, the latest to resign are doctors John Marsden, Ian Ragan, and Simon Campbell. Their departure would mean six of the panel's 31 members appointed to advise Johnson on drugs policy have defected in solidarity with Nutt.

A 15-YEAR-old Brisbane schoolgirl was suspended for shaving her head to raise money for vital cancer research

her father is battling leukemia.

He underwent a bone marrow transplant a few weeks ago but has been given only a few months to live.

Ms Pridham decided to shave her head as part of a fundraiser for cancer research.

"Basically my way of coping is to try and help other people going through the same thing," she said.

Ms Pridham said she has been banned from Mount Alvernia College until her hair grows back.

Barbara Pridham said she supports her daughter's fundraising decision.

"I am just appalled that she could be suspended by a Catholic school that promotes joy, respect and community spirit," she said.

Mount Alvernia College released a statement to Channel Nine News that said Ms Pridham had breached the college's uniform guidelines and had been suspended because of "ongoing issues".
