Are we a nation of whiners, as Phil Gramm put it a little while ago? No, the American public is not whining...More likely, though, Americans are just leaving the whining to pundits and trend reporters. Our problem is not whining. It is persuading young people that, with baby boomers retiring, entitlement programs bulging and the world economy growing ever more competitive, now's the time to roll up the sleeves for something other than tattoos.

For example, India produces 2.5 million college graduates every year (with concentrations in high demand fields - electronics, programming, engineering, accounting, etc.), and approximately 90,000 MBA's. Nothing against tattoos, but I do feel ignorance and apathy are much too prominent in America. Awareness of ignorance is the first step to wisdom.

Never mind that GDP is puttering along in positive terrain. Headlines still scream that we're closing in on 1929, not 2009.

Meanwhile, Prius cars are flying off the Toyota lots, even though they cost $3,700 more than a similarly sized gasoline-fired Toyota and it takes 3.5 years to pay back the investment in fuel savings.

In July the jobless rate among college graduates was just 2.4%, drifting up from 2.1% in March. That is miles away from the 1981 recession and, of course, you'd need scientific notation to compare it to the Great Depression

For some, it still feels lousy out there. But lousy is not a technical synonym for recession.

Still, no president, Democrat or Republican, can create prosperity for those who decide to forgo even a basic education.

High schools don't teach what they used to, and so students who don't go to college are left without the skills necessary to compete in a global economy.

clipper's remarks: To uncover this ability, Pessiglione and colleague Chris Frith, of University College London, tested 20 volunteers with a simple game based on winning and losing small amounts of money.

On a computer screen, the volunteers watched an animated abstract pattern which for a couple of tenths of a second included one of three symbols part way through. Unbeknownst to the subjects, the symbols indicated whether they would lose or gain £1 or break even if they accepted the gamble.

Surprisingly, subjects got better at predicting whether they would win or not, eventually plateauing at slightly above chance, strong evidence that volunteers do not consciously notice the symbols but are affected by them nonetheless.

Next time you’re at a blackjack table trying to decide whether to hold or hit, just trust your gut. New research shows that our brains pick up on subliminal signals – a dealer’s tell, for instance – when making risky decisions.

“When you think that you are referring to your intuition, actually you just learn an association between subliminal signals in your context and the outcome of your actions,” says Mathias Pessiglione, a neuroscientist at the Centre for Neuroimaging Research in Paris, France, who led the study.

Doctors and gamblers may be used to trusting their instincts in make-or-break situations, but scientists have had a tough time proving that the brain can learn subconsciously.

Under a functional-MRI brain scanner, the researchers found that the subjects appeared to be basing their subconscious choices on activity in an area of their brains involved in conscious risk-taking – the striatum.

Almost 10,000 people spent $7.3 million buying phony and counterfeit high school and college degrees from a Spokane diploma mill. The complete list of buyers, which the U.S. Department of Justice has refused to release to the public, has been obtained by The Spokesman-Review and published July 28.

Some names are annotated with an asterisk (*). These individuals didn't necessarily buy degrees, but their names surfaced for various reasons during Operation Gold Seal, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday. They said these individuals should not be considered as confirmed degree buyers.

clipper's remarks: Speculation is that he's the man for McCain. Looks to be a solid but not very exciting pick. He does have more experience that Obama, and would be the only candidate in the race that isn't a US senator and who has executive experience.

From what I can tell, this guy would help more than hurt McCain, but I don't think he would have a major impact either way right away. Looks like he would be a safe pick that could put Minnesota into play, but not an exciting pick like Alaska's Sarah Palin or Oklahoma's Dr. No Tom Coburn or even Joe Lieberman (not that I think he would be a good pick, but he would be exciting).

Inferred arrogance is a way of enabling bad behavior. He's being a jerk, so I can be a jerk. You see it a lot in politics too - John McCain calls Barack Obama an elitist. Look, they're both U.S. senators; they both went to college; they're both major-party nominees for president. It's elitist against elitist.

And, just incidentally, what's the matter with being an elitist? Would you rather have some low-normal meth-addled unemployed carpenter from Hemet running the country? No, but it turns out that low-normal meth-addled unemployed carpenters from Hemet can get very excited by the use of the word "elitist." They can perceive inferred arrogance. "This guy thinks he's better than me."

Why should achievement and education be turned into negative traits? Why should virtue be decried as snooty? I know there are paid political operatives out there who just push the buttons they think will help their candidate

but why are citizens buying into it? Are we a nation ruled by resentment?

SUE WENTZ and her husband, Eugene, saved for five years, living in a modest home in a low-income neighborhood of Houston, before they broke ground in January on a 4,300-square-foot house on 12 acres in Magnolia, Tex., a woodsy suburb about 40 miles northwest of the city. They are overseeing the construction themselves to control costs. So it was with dismay that they arrived at the job site one morning in July to find that all the copper wiring and air-conditioning tubing had been ripped out of the rough frame of the house.

Besides the financial hit — $11,000 — the theft took a psychological toll. “I felt so violated, and now I don’t trust anyone,” said Ms. Wentz, who teaches English at a community college

If this were merely a failure to cite Kinnock, why was Labor Leader Neil Kinnock talking about the Biden family and the coal mines of Pennsylvania?

Biden not only lifted -- as The New York Times reported -- Kinnock's "phrases, gestures and lyrical Welsh syntax intact," but also his entire life story.

Kinnock's speech continued: "Those people who could sing and play and recite and write poetry? Those people who could make wonderful, beautiful things with their hands? Those people who could dream dreams, see visions? Why didn't they get it? Was it because they were weak? Those people who could work eight hours underground and then come up and play football? Weak?"
