Japan plans massive floating generators which generate power and provide food

Japan realizing its massive future energy needs has decided to build ECO rigs that are generators which measure 1.2 miles by 0.5 miles that ground various alternate energy collectors like solar arrays, wind turbines and other green sources. Each of these Eco Rigs could produce around 300 megawatt hours of power, scientists even estimate that strapping three such Rigs could produce enough energy as a standard Nuclear power station.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is an automotive charitable event, a tradition that goes on for over 50 years. Both prewar and postwar collectors come each year to Pebble Beach, California, to show off their “assets”. This year, one of the most highly anticipated concept cars at the show is going to be the Rolls-Royce Hyperion by Pininfarina.

Based on the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, the Pininfarina Hyperion has been commissioned by one lucky and presumably very wealthy customer. Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute have just done a batch of research that they hope will help turn the world's roads into cheap collectors of solar power.

They started with the assumption that asphalt gets frakking hot when the sun shines on it, and then started making some serious leaps.

The result is blacktop that gets even hotter and stays hotter for longer than regular asphalt. Of course, this left them with the problem of how to get the energy out of the road. By laying down a series of flexible and highly conductive copper pipes before pouring the asphalt they were able to pump water through the asphalt, picking up the heat, for use in power generation.

In the lab, small slabs were exposed to halogen lamps, simulating sunlight. Larger slabs were set up outdoors and exposed to more realistic environmental conditions, including direct sunlight and wind. The tests showed that asphalt absorbs a considerable amount of heat and that the highest temperatures are found a few centimeters below the surface. This is where a heat exchanger would be located to extract the maximum amount of energy. Experimenting with various asphalt compositions, they found that the addition of highly conductive aggregates, like quartzite, can significantly increase heat absorption, as can the application of a special paint that reduces reflection.

Alternative Energy Hits the Road

Anyone who has walked barefoot across a parking lot on a hot summer day knows that blacktop is exceptionally good at soaking up the sun’s warmth.

Now, a research team at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has found a way to use that heat-soaking property for an alternative energy source. Through asphalt, the researchers are developing a solar collector that could turn roads and parking lots into ubiquitous—and inexpensive–sources of electricity and hot water.

Asphalt has a lot of advantages as a solar collector,” Mallick says. “For one, blacktop stays hot and could continue to generate energy after the sun goes down, unlike traditional solar-electric cells

In addition, there is already a massive acreage of installed roads and parking lots that could be retrofitted for energy generation, so there is no need to find additional land for solar farms.

Extracting heat from asphalt could cool it, reducing the urban ‘heat island’ effect

Why Should We Trust Them With More of our Money?

clipper's remarks: It's become pretty obvious to anyone paying attention, that state and federal governments are not good at managing money. We have a huge federal deficit, many states are facing huge deficits, and some large cities are even going bankrupt.

Why would we even consider raising taxes to give government even more of our money to mis-manage? All they'll do is pass more ridiculous legislation that spends our money even more unwisely.

Instead, let's focus on cutting government spending. Or an even more radical idea, let's run our governments like a business, led be real business executives instead of politicians.

I'm tired of seeing a large portion of my paycheck get flushed down the drain because our state and federal governments don't know a thing about how to spend it wisely.

It's amazing that a card can be worth that much money. Wagner, a legendary shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, made less in his professional career than one of his baseball cards is worth.

I feel bad for the guy; even though he's dead, a piece of paper was worth more then he was. But this guy was playing in the early 1900s, so nobody made that much.

All you baseball card people out there with classics, maybe you, too, will make a lot of money. Don't neglect your collection.

Classic Elvis: The statue bears an unmistakeable resemblance to the real King

With his dashing chiselled features, swept back hair and perky bouffant the resemblance is unmistakable.

But incredibly this carving of Elvis Presley was created around 1800 years before the King of Rock and Roll first warbled his first note.

The amazing likeness has come to light as part of a sale of ancient antiques by the auction house Bonhams.

The real thing: Elvis in concert in 1968

It forms part of a collection owned by Melbourne-based Graham Geddes - one of the world's most foremost collectors - which is estimated to sell for more than £1m when it goes on sale in October.

A spokesman for Bonhams said: "It is perhaps the strangest item in the sale, certainly to modern eyes.

The 'Elvis’ sculpture is 2nd Century AD and is estimated to make £25,000 to £30,000.

If you have ever seen a Reborn baby doll, then you know that they look for all the world like real babies. Reborns are popular with doll collectors as well as those who can't or don't want to have actual children.

Some of them, however, just lie there looking like real babies who aren't breathing. Like the one police in Australia saw when they peered into the window of an otherwise empty and locked automobile. Believing a child's life was in danger, the police smashed the window and rescued the doll.

A similar incident in the United States cost a man a window out of his brand new Hummer after his wife left her Reborn in his car.

Yes - that’s a real $10,000 banknote - the largest denomination Federal Reserve Notes ever printed. They were printed up to 1945 and were issued until 1969. They are still legal tender today, however, these notes are mostly in the hands of private collectors.

Who’s the guy on the banknote? It’s Salmon P. Chase - who was the US Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln, and later became the 6th Chief Justice of Supreme Court . He was also one of three people featured on the dollar bill who weren’t a president (the other two were Hamilton for $10 bill and Ben Franklin for $100 bill).

Interestingly, Chase’s portrait also appeared on the first $1 bill issued in 1862, when the Civil War brought on a monetary crisis. Later, as Chief Justice, Chase declared his own banknote to be unconstitutional!

In August of 2004 Takara held a contest in Japan where after buying five sepecific Transformer toys and sending in their "points" in you were entered in a drawing to win a Gold Masterpiece Optimus Prime. Only ten (or possibly twenty) of these unique toys were made. Based upon the Masterpiece Optimus Prime which has won many "Toy of the Year" awards, for many collectors this has become the holy grail of Transformers. I have created this site with photos of my Gold Optimus Prime so everyone can see more than the one photo shown in the contest.

DiStefano, a former Ney chief of staff, and Coffee, who had been part of George W. As a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, John McCain began the hearings that brought down Jack Abramoff, the former K-Street lobbyist, and key figure in a political scandal that landed Abramoff in jail.

But in Senator McCain's list of his 'bundlers' - or top money collectors - his campaign released this week, among the names was Juan Carlos Benitez, a fellow lawyer and lobbyist whom Abramoff had supported for a Bush administration post in 2001.

Questions have previously been raised about Benitez apart from his possible relationship with Abramoff. According to the blog Fired Up America, Benitez was lobbying for the island of Guam in 2003, at the same time that his wife was a special adviser on economic policy at the Department of the Interior, responsible for helping improve economic conditions on that island.
