Business welcomes free trade deal

Canterbury business has generally welcomed the historic free-trade agreement (FTA) with China.

But some caution that the devil will be in the detail as the Government trumpets the deal being worth up to $350 million annually to New Zealand.

National business organisations are calling it a big achievement, although the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association (CMA) said key problems had to be addressed if the playing field was to be levelled between New Zealand and China.

The Council of Trade Unions (CTU) said it appeared union concerns had been noted in the deal, and that the phasing-down period for the remaining NZ tariffs was over a reasonable time. The labour memorandum also gave a channel for unions to raise labour rights issues.

Ngai Tahu Seafoods chief executive Geoff Hipkins said getting real security over future tariffs and import regimes would give the firm more confidence and lessen its risk as it expands into the China market.

The arrival of 2008 finds Kenny Chesney in the driver's seat. The CMA and ACM's reigning entertainer of the year, Kenny sold more concert tickets than any other country act in '07 -- followed by Tim McGraw/Faith Hill and Rascal Flatts. This, too, will eventually pass. Remember when George Strait was filling the stadiums, back when Kenny, Faith and Tim were his opening acts? Who will be the next act? Brad Paisley is filling major venues, Dierks Bentley is looking real good and Carrie Underwood is selling records like hotcakes.

Lightning Strikes Kill 109 People in August

Lightning strikes killed 109 Chinese people and injured 43 in August, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) announced on Friday.

In early July, the Ministry of Education, the State Meteorological Administration (SMA) and the emergency office of the State Council jointly started a campaign to provide free materials on how to avoid lightning strikes to more than 420,000 high schools and primary schools nationwide.

Figures from the CMA show that 19,982 accidents involving lightning strikes occurred in 2006 across the country, claiming 717 lives and injuring 640 people.

CMS web design: Mambo, Joomla, or Drupal?

When it comes to web-based CMS, there are a variety of open source solutions; while each one doesn't offer everything, there are 3 that clearly stand above the rest: Mambo, Joomla, and Drupal.

When it comes down to it, you'll be deciding between Joomla and Drupal; Mambo is an earlier development that was abandoned in 2005 and has many bugs. If you choose Mambo, I can promise that you'll be spending much time searching message boards and modifying PHP scripts.

In terms of installation, Joomla is clearly the winner; Drupal is significantly harder to install, and requires the user to have certain high-level privileges to the server's database.

Drupal's appearance is a far cry from that of Mambo or Joomla; although, looks should take no authority over usability. Drupal is, however, easier to customize; often times a simple change in Mambo or Joomla would lead to other elements not displaying correctly.

China lightning kills record 141

Lightning killed almost 150 people last month across China, the highest number since records began in 2000, a state body has said.

According to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), 141 people died in lightning strikes in July.

China's top meteorological official blamed global warming for the extreme seasonal weather.

More than 700 people have died in floods in central China, while millions of others have been hit by drought.

"Extreme weather has incurred frequent natural disasters such as rainstorms, floods and droughts across the country this year," CMA chief Zheng Guoguang said on Wednesday.

Elsewhere in China, meteorologists issued their first heatstroke warning of the year.

Forecasters said temperatures in southern China and the western Xinjiang region could hit 40 degrees Celsius.

Millions of hectares of arable land have been affected, the office said.

If our sun were replaced with such a star, its surface could extend to the orbit of Saturn. If we take its radius to be that higher figure of 2100 solar radii, it would take more than 2 hours for light to travel around its circumference.

Potential Deception and Destruction of Healthy Chocolate

Members of the Chocolate Manufacturers of America (CMA), such as Hershey, Nestle and Archer Daniels Midland, initially posing as an interested citizens group, have covertly petitioned the FDA to "modernize food standards" by allowing products containing little or no cocoa butter to still be labeled chocolate.

This would allow products that were essentially a mix of milk, artificial sweeteners and hydrogenated trans fats to be sold as chocolate.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Considering science is proving how eating minimally-processed chocolate can provide you with boatloads of beneficial antioxidants, you'd think big business couldn't and wouldn't do anything to mess that good news up.

Guess again, folks.

You may soon see sales of "chocolate" that is a mixture of artificial sweeteners, 2 percent milk fats and the very health-harming trans fats.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but the FDA controls what fits under the definition of chocolate for sale in the United States.

The rules currently state (basically) that chocolate must contain cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Other things can be in there, like milk fat and milk solids to make milk chocolate and a small amount of milk fat can be added to dark chcoolate as well. The new proposal would allow products that contain NO COCOA BUTTER to be call chocolate.

Why is the Chocolate Manufacturers Association pushing for this? Because it’s more cost efficient.

You know what? The FDA doesn’t have to give the CMA what they want. You have the power to reject this ... but you have to tell the FDA!

It’s never been easier ... just visit the FDA’s public comment portion of their website and tell them that you don’t want to lose real chocolate in a sea of wax and tropical oils. You can fill out the form, or send them a letter or a fax.
