Child Dying of Cancer Leaves Notes Behind

Brooke and Keith Desserich of Cincinnati, Ohio, were told their daughter Elena had 135 days to live. She beat her diagnosis by 121 days.

But during that time, as she fought the cruelest form of pediatric brain cancer, 5-year-old Elena left a powerful legacy.

She began to hide little notes -- hidden in book shelves, CD cases, sock drawers -- for her family to find after she was gone.

"The first time I found a note caught between books, I thought nothing of it," said Keith Desserich, 34, and an entrepreneur. "But then I started to find 20 to 30 notes, and wondered if there was something more to it. One -- 'I love you Mom and Dad' -- was packed in a bag of clothes put away for the winter."

Soon, the family got calls from her grandparents, saying they, too, had colorful hand drawings from Elena. One aunt even found a note written to her chihuahua, which little Elena loved.

Also known as Echizen kurage or Nemopilema nomurai, Nomura’s jellyfish aren’t your garden variety jellyfish, growing 6 feet long and 400 pounds heavy.

Last week, the 10-ton Japanese fishing vessel Daisan Shinso-maru bit off more than it could chew, capsizing while attempting to bring in a net full of jellyfish. (All the crew members were safely rescued.)

When Denver Broncos Coach Josh McDaniels heard about the poll and told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review Wednesday "He's one of those guys when you say tough, physical football player, his face is probably right there in the dictionary" .

Cincinnati businessman Roger Ach surrendered to Texas authorities on a felony bad check charge, spent a little more than an hour in a crowded jail cell and, on Friday, was back home on a $7,500 cash bond.

Ach, 60, beat a Monday deadline to turn himself in to face a Denton, Texas, charge of "theft of services" from a Texas consulting company, Halter Financial Group. Its owner, Timothy Halter, accused Ach of writing a bad check for services valued at between $100,000 and $200,000. An indictment was issued June 5.

Being booked and having a mug shot taken at the Denton County jail is the latest setback for an entrepreneur and fund-raiser whose connections extend to Ohio Gov. Bob Taft and the upper reaches of Cincinnati society. His company, Games Inc., has lost $2.2 million in its current fiscal year and concedes the uncertainty of its future as a going concern. He lost his East Walnut Hills mansion last month in a sheriff-supervised foreclosure auction.

Ms. Taitz is a leader in the so-called "Birther Movement," the movement that challenges President Obama's right to hold office on the grounds that he is not a U.S. citizen.

The ABA Journal Law News Now reports that a federal judge in Georgia fined Taitz $20,000 for her wild accusations in court and ordered her not to pursue any further frivolous actions in court - ever. In my opinion, this should render Taitz unable to practice law. Not to be dissuaded, Taitz filed a motion for reconsideration the next day. Lawyer Fined $20K for ‘Wild Accusations’ in Suit Over Obama Citizenship

A Georgia federal judge has fined California lawyer Orly Taitz $20,000 for her litigation tactics in a suit questioning whether Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen.

U.S. District Judge Clay Land said he had no reservations about sanctioning Taitz, the Cincinnati Ledger-Enquirer reports. “A clearer case could not exist; a weaker message would not suffice.”

Land had dismissed Taitz’s suit contending Obama had no authority to deploy an Army captain to Iraq and told her never to pursue a “frivolous” claim again. She filed a motion for reconsideration the next day. Earlier this month she filed a recusal motion that implied Land may have dismissed the action because of an improper “whisper” by Attorney General Eric Holder, who was reportedly spotted in a coffeeshop near the courthouse. She also claimed Land was influenced by improper stock holdings.
