Rape victim's 'gunpowder in eyes' horror

A rapist who poured gunpowder in his victim's eyes and set it alight could be jailed for up to 25 years, a court has heard.

The 26-year-old victim, who cannot be named, was raped in front of her four-year-old son before she was tied up and the gunpowder set alight.

Dennis robbed the woman at knife point and threatened to hurt her son, telling her, "Maybe I should take you for a drive but I guarantee that if I take you for a drive that it will be an all night thing because I have some friends in a car and they aren't as nice as me. Would you like a big gang bang?"

He then raped her as her son watched, tied her hands and feet with rope, poured gunpowder into her eyes and lit it with a cigarette lighter.

"You know you shouldn't cry 'cos it turns me on,'' he told the four-year-old as he masturbated in front of him.

"I am going to lie on top of mummy and protect her.''

Judge Penelope Hock today described the use of gunpowder as a "completely gratuitous act which you might describe as torture''.

Ex-boxing champ shot dead in smoking dispute

LONDON (Reuters) - Former British heavyweight boxing champion James Oyebola was shot in the neck in a nightclub after asking a group of men to stop smoking, a court heard Tuesday. Prosecutor Jeremy Donne told the Old Bailey that the boxer died after the "senseless" shooting at the Chateau 6 club in Fulham, west London, in July 2007.

He never regained consciousness after being hit in the neck and leg and died in hospital four days later when doctors switched off his life-support machine.

The Nigerian-born, 6ft 9" boxer won the UK heavyweight title in 1994 and the bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, where he lost to Lennox Lewis in the semi-finals.

Four men are on trial for his murder: Cyle Carth, 18; Dean Francis, 24; Rene McKoy, 20 and Kanyanta Mulenga, 23, all from south London. They deny murder and affray.

ST. CLOUD, Fla. -- A St. Cloud man's face, head and neck were charred when he sat down in his house to have a cigarette and a bug bomb detonated.

The explosion happened at 901 Walnut in the Mark Mobile Home Park.

After the bug bomb that was under a cabinet in the trailer went off, the 55-year-old rushed to the shower to cool off his burns, which is where St. Cloud Fire Rescue found him upon their arrival.

The force of the explosion blew the cabinets apart and the stove door open, but nothing in the room besides the man was burned.

The man was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Lee County Sheriff's Office says a Bonita Springs man has been arrested after offering undercover deputy who was posing as a prostitute two cents for sex.

Fausino Diaz Hernandez, 46, has been charged with soliciting a prostitute.

According to an arrest report, Hernandez offered a female undercover deputy two pennies on Thursday night.

Acting Sgt. Matt Chitwood, of the narcotics and vice operations for the Bonita Springs Community Policing unit, said Hernandez offered the undercover deputy other things as well, including cigarette lighters and a bicycle.

Hernandez's arrest was part of a three-hour sting to crack down on prostitution in Bonita Springs. He was one of 10 men arrested during the sting.

A previously unrecognized group of air pollutants could have effects remarkably similar to harmful substances found in tobacco smoke, Louisiana scientists are reporting in a study scheduled for presentation today at the 236th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. Inhaling those pollutants exposes the average person up to 300 times more free radicals daily than from smoking one cigarette, they added.

since tobacco smoke also contains these molecules. In the five minutes it takes a typical smoker to finish a cigarette, he or she will breathe in an equal number of PFRs from the air and the smoke itself, likely compounding the damaging effects.

In New York City and State, tobacco taxes have been raised so many times that the retail cost can exceed $9 a pack -- about double the national average. Few budget-savvy smokers in the Big Apple pay that tax. Patrick Fleenor, an expert on tobacco taxes at the Tax Foundation, estimates that there is "now a 75% gap between cigarette sales in the city and cigarette consumption." In other words, three out of four cigarettes are bought elsewhere or are contraband.

In New Jersey, about 40% of the Marlboros and Virginia Slims that are lit up escape the $2.57-a-pack tax. In Washington State, evasion was so rampant that the legislature decided in 2005 to lower the 75% tax on cigars and other tobacco products as a way to raise revenue and help state retailers.

Politicians in Annapolis are scratching their heads wondering what happened to all those chain smokers who were supposed to help balance Maryland's budget. Last year the legislature doubled the cigarette tax to $2 a pack to pay for expanded health-care coverage. Eight months later, cigarette sales have plunged 25% and the state is in fiscal distress again.

As House Majority Leader Kumar Barve put it, fewer people smoking is "a good thing." Yes, except that Maryland may be losing retail sales more than smokers. Residents of Maryland's Washington suburbs can shop in nearby Virginia, where the tax is only 30 cents a pack, and save at least $15 per carton.

The Maryland pols are so afraid this is true that they've made it a crime for residents to carry two packs of cigarettes that weren't purchased in the state.

Out-of-state purchases, tax-free Internet sales and a cigarette black market are booming.

Puffing on a first cigarette is a rite of passage for many teenagers, but whether it is enjoyable may be partly down to genetics, researchers suggest.

University of Michigan scientists have identified a gene variant found more often in people who said their first cigarette produced a "buzz".

These people were much more likely to go on to become regular smokers, the journal Addiction reports.

The researchers say the finding may help development of anti-smoking drugs.

A person's decision to smoke for the first time, or carry on smoking, is not thought to be governed solely by his or her genes, but a mixture of genes, environmental factors and social pressures.

It appears that for people who have a certain genetic make-up, the initial physical reaction to smoking can play a significant role in determining what happens next

Genetic data was obtained from 435 volunteers, some of whom were regular smokers, and some who had tried cigarettes but were not currently smokers.
