SYDNEY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called for all religions to unite against terrorism and resolve conflicts peacefully on Friday and heard an Islamic leader urge Christians to overcome "misconceptions and prejudices" about Muslims.

"In a world threatened by sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence, the unified voice of religious people urges nations and communities to resolve conflict through peaceful means and with full regard for human dignity," Benedict told an meeting with Muslims, Jews and members of other non-Christian faiths.

The pope, in Australia for the Church's World Youth Day, also said the Catholic Church was open to learn from other religions, a comment seen in the context of moves to improve relations with other religions, particularly Islam.

"The Church eagerly seeks opportunities to listen to the spiritual experience of other religions," he said.

It's not likely the pressure of the Olympics will get to Lopez Lomong.

He has, after all, visited his own grave.

Seventeen years ago, when Lomong was 6, Sudanese rebels snatched him from a church. His parents presumed their second son was dead until they were reunited in December.

Then, together, they visited the Catholic cemetery in their village of Kimotong.

"They'd made a funeral for me," Lomong said. "They had this pile of stones and things like that. They'd buried some of my childhood stuff. Symbols. A necklace. Other things from me."

Happily, they disassembled the pile and dug up the artefacts.

Now, the 23-year-old runner will compete for the United States in the 1,500-meter run in Beijing.

Over the past few years, several controversies over religion's role in the military have arisen. Most recently, students and staff at the U.S. Naval Academy and West Point have complained of pressure from their supervisors to engage in religious activities. Three years earlier, similar allegations surfaced at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Other controversies have arisen over whether military chaplains may offer faith-specific prayers at official military events. With cadets, military officers and chaplains asserting competing constitutional rights, these disputes have raised complicated questions. clipper's remarks: It seems to me that Manchester's allowing his "Catholic faith" to turn him into a bad businessman. After all, more marriages = more honeymoons = more money spent at hotels.

Besides, his Catholic faith requires a Catholic wedding -- does this mean he'd spend money to outlaw any wedding that wasn't Catholic?

A hotel owner’s $125,000 donation to support a ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage in the state has become a flashpoint, with opponents calling for a boycott of two of his hotels and supporters highlighting the donation in a fund-raising letter.

The hotelier, Doug Manchester, donated the money to support the collection of signatures to qualify the initiative, which would amend the state’s Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage, for the November ballot.

Efforts in 2006 on behalf of similar initiatives were not successful. But this year, an increase in donations from across the country helped qualify Proposition 8 in early June for the state ballot.

Mr. Manchester said Wednesday: “This really is a free-speech, First Amendment issue. While I respect everyone’s choice of partner, my Catholic faith and longtime affiliation with the Catholic Church leads me to believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

The reverse is also true. Chaos, joylessness, division, erotic numbness, and hardness of heart are generally a fault in chastity. To say this, though, implies a certain understanding of chastity. clipper's remarks: US taxpayers are required to report all foreign financial accounts if their total value exceeds $10,000 at any point during a given year, prosecutors said. Failure to report the accounts can result in a penalty of up to 50 percent of the amount in the accounts.
The report states that in some instances, UBS declined to report accounts to the IRS when clients opened them in the names of offshore corporations, trusts, foundations or other entities, even if the bank knew the true beneficial owners were US taxpayers.

In Liechtenstein, the report said the royal family's LGT Group contributed to a "culture of secrecy and deception" that enabled clients to "evade US taxes, dodge creditors, and ignore court orders."

St. Nicholas' Parish Church and Gutenberg Castle, in the Alpine tax haven of Liechtenstein, which has a population of 35,000.

The US loses about $100 billion annually due to offshore tax evasion, according to a US Senate report that targets Swiss bank UBS and Liechtenstein's royal family controlled LGT Group for allegedly marketing tax-evasion strategies to wealthy Americans. The report says 19,000 Americans have undeclared UBS offshore accounts, with a combined value of $17.9 billion and Liechtenstein royal Prince Philipp who is chairman of LGT, touted for business from tax evaders.

Last month, a US federal judge ruled that the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) could serve legal papers on UBS to force the bank to disclose who may have used overseas accounts to hide assets and avoid taxes.

I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything.

I want to know which church is it exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson practices, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution.

I think the cops have every right to shoot you if you're running from them. I also think they have the right to pull you over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are.

The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America and see what happens. Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.

I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is your opinion.

Café owners in the Netherlands are joining religious movement known as the One and Universal Smokers Church of God, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

‘We stand firmly behind the church’s teachings and that is smoking,’ Cor Busch, owner of the former Lindeboom café in Alkmaar told the paper. ‘Smokers are being discriminated against… but a beer and a cigarette belong together.’

Smoking has been banned in Dutch bars since July 1.

Several dozen bars have joined the movement which claims the Dutch constitution and European rules give it legitimacy under the right to freedom of religion, the paper says.

People who join the church get a membership card entitling them to smoke inside the building. Worshippers believe in the trinity of smoke, fire and ash and honour their god by smoking.

Church founder Michiel Eijsbouts says café owners who are trying to get round the ban on smoking will not be allowed to join. The church, he says, takes smoking very seriously.

HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion

In a spectacular act of complicity with the religious right, the Department of Health and Human Services Monday released a proposal that allows any federal grant recipient to obstruct a woman's access to contraception. In order to do this, the Department is attempting to redefine many forms of contraception, the birth control 40% of Americans use, as abortion. Doing so protects extremists under the Weldon and Church amendments. Those laws prohibit federal grant recipients from requiring employees to help provide or refer for abortion services. In the "Definitions" section of the HHS proposal it states,

Under these new standards there would be no way for a woman to prove she's not pregnant. Thus, any woman could be denied contraception under HHS' new science.

Russia says remains of last Czar's son identified

Russia said on Wednesday that charred remains found in a pit belonged to Czar Nicholas II's only son and his daughter, exactly 90 years after the Bolsheviks shocked the world by murdering the last Czar.

Moscow's confirmation that the remains included those of Czar Nicholas' 13-year-old heir, Prince Alexei, came as hundreds of Russians flocked to a church built on the site where the family was gunned down by Bolshevik executioners.

Remains believed to belong to the Czar, his wife and three of his daughters were exhumed after the collapse of the Soviet Union. They were reburied in 1998 in the imperial crypt of the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in St Petersburg.

But Prince Alexei Nikolayevich and 19-year-old Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna were not among those remains.

Forensic scientists said molar teeth and amalgam fillings found with the new remains matched those found among the remains of the other members of the royal family.
