The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.

Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.

Several D.C. Council members said the Catholic Church is trying to erode the city's long-standing laws protecting gay men and lesbians from discrimination.

Catholic Church explores astrobiology at conference

The Vatican has hosted a conference to study the possibility of alien life in the universe and its implication for the Catholic Church.

The study was part of events marking the UN-designated International Year of Astronomy.

The Rev Jose Gabriel Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory, said "the questions of life's origins and of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe are very suitable and deserve serious consideration".

Funes said the possibility of alien life raises "many philosophical and theological implications" but added that the gathering was mainly focused on the scientific perspective and how different disciplines can be used to explore the issue.

This is not the first time the Vatican has explored the issue of extraterrestrials. In 2005, its observatory brought together top researchers in the field for similar discussions.

He said: "How can we rule out that life may have developed elsewhere.

For over 20 years, church youth groups, boy scouts, families, camps, and many others have been heading to the mountains to experience Mother Nature at her finest with a rafting trip. URIEL (אוּרִיאֵל): Anglicized form of Hebrew Uwriyel, meaning "flame of God" or "light of the Lord." In the bible, this is the name of a Levite, and the maternal grandfather of Abijah. It is also the name of one of the seven archangels whose names were removed from the Church's list of recognized angels in 145 A.D. He was said to have been one of the angels stationed at God's throne. The Democratic instinct to crush free speech is surpassed only its sister predisposition to crush religion. So it really is no surprise that Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey is suggesting that the IRS revisit the Catholic Church's tax-exempt status.

In her own words:

The role the bishops played in the pushing the Stupak amendment, which unfairly restricts access for low-income women to insurance coverage for abortions, was more than mere advocacy.

And this political effort was subsidized by taxpayers, since the Council enjoys tax-exempt status.

the tax-exempt status of churches, religious organizations, and other non-profits is not a subsidy. This insidious line of thought is characteristic of Democrats, who are so twisted that they believe whatever the government forbears to take by force of law is a "subsidy" the recipient should be thankful for

"The questions of life's origins and of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe are very suitable and deserve serious consideration," said the Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, an astronomer and director of the Vatican Observatory.

Funes, a Jesuit priest, presented the results Tuesday of a five-day conference that gathered astronomers, physicists, biologists and other experts to discuss the budding field of astrobiology — the study of the origin of life and its existence elsewhere in the cosmos.

Using tissue grown in a laboratory, researchers have engineered fully functional replacement penises. The organs were made for rabbits, but the technique may someday be useful for people.

“This technology has considerable potential for patients requiring penile construction,” wrote researchers in a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Leading the team was Anthony Atala, director of Wake Forest University’s Institute of Regenerative Medicine. Atala is best known for developing a technique in which cells are taken from an organ and sprayed onto a frame made of collagen, the primary structural protein in animal tissue. The structure is then bathed with growth-stimulating compounds and kept in an oven that duplicates the body’s temperature and chemical composition.

Given these starting conditions, natural biology does the rest. The cells divide and arrange themselves in natural, working configurations.

Westboro Baptist Church, a hate group that travels around the country holding anti-gay rallies, protested outside the school attended by President Obama's children on Monday morning.

The "church," run by Fred Phelps and composed largely of his extensive family, is known for staging its events for maximum publicity and controversy. In the past, members have demonstrated outside troops' funerals. Recently they have been targeting Jewish temples. Now they're aiming their vitriol at Washington-area schools -- including Sidwell Friends, where Malia and Sasha Obama are students.

A message on Westboro's website refers to the Obama children as "satanic spawn" of a "murderous bastard." Along with various schools, the church is also protesting outside the White House, the World War II memorial, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission field office.

Protesters were carrying signs with anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama slogans, slowing down traffic all along Wisconsin Avenue.
