To back up its claims, the White House also released a white paper showing that independent economists estimate that the stimulus package has created or saved anywhere from 620,000 to 1.5 million jobs through the third quarter. Those numbers figure in all of the stimulus spending to date as well as secondary employment, which is fair.

A million or so jobs sounds good until you remember that U.S. employment has fallen by more than 7 million since the recession began in December 2007. Economists estimate that the economy lost roughly 200,000 more jobs in October alone.

On Oct. 29 news reports greeted the 3.5% estimated growth rate of the economy in the third quarter as evidence that the deep recession was finally over. However, much of that growth came from stimulus programs such as cash for clunkers and the tax credit for first-time home buyers. Without those, President Obama's chief economic adviser, Christina Romer, said on Oct. 29: "Real GDP would have risen little, if at all."

Experts see rebounding economy shedding jobs

"It's not even a jobless recovery; it's a recovery with more job losses," said UCLA economist Lee Ohanian. "The idea of having essentially no net job creation after a remarkably severe recession is a real pathology for the U.S. economy."

Top White House economist Christina Romer of UC Berkeley told Congress on Thursday that employment growth could remain "painfully weak" through next year, and that the largest effect from the $787 billion stimulus enacted in February, mainly aid to states, is past.

Even under optimistic assumptions, it could take seven straight years of solid growth just to get employment back to where it was before the downturn, a Rutgers University analysis found.

clipper's remarks: Of course, the truth that very few people want to say out loud is that for-profit insurance companies are actually doing the smart thing by denying coverage to sexual-assault victims. If you've been raped, you're probably going to require expensive one-on-one therapy and who knows what other sorts of treatment. You're a bad risk. Why not deny coverage? At least, that's how it looks to me. Someone can explain to me if I'm getting it wrong somehow.

Rape Victim's Choice: Risk AIDS or Health Insurance?

Christina Turner feared that she might have been sexually assaulted after two men slipped her a knockout drug. She thought she was taking proper precautions when her doctor prescribed a month's worth of anti-AIDS medicine.

Only later did she learn that she had made herself all but uninsurable.

"It's difficult enough to make sure that rape victims take the drugs," said Diana Faugno, a forensic nurse in California and board director of End Violence Against Women International. "What are we supposed to tell women now? Well, I guess you have a choice - you can risk your health insurance or you can risk AIDS. Go ahead and choose."

Turner, now a life and casualty insurance agent, said she went without health coverage for three years after the attack. She second-guesses her decision to take the HIV drugs. "I'm going to be penalized my whole life because of this," she said.

"It was remarkable that the irradiated, running mice were just like the normal, non-irradiated mice that didn't exercise," lead researcher and graduate student Sarah Wong-Goodrich of the Duke Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, was quoted as saying. "We were expecting some memory retention issues with a longer delay and there weren't any."

The researchers believe exercise benefits the mind by improving blood flow to the hippocampus in the brain, a key area for learning and memory.

Exercise after receiving radiation to the brain is key to improving memory and mood, new research shows.

Exercise appears to prevent the decline of erasable memory, which is similar to the memory problems patients with brain tumors experience following whole-brain radiation.

"This is the type of short-term memory people use to find their car after they have parked it in a large lot," Christina Williams, Ph.D., a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the Duke University in Durham, N.C., was quoted as saying. "After radiation, this type of memory becomes impaired in many people."

In the scientists' experiment, one group of mice was kept in their cages following brain radiation, to live among other mice as they normally would -- eating and playing. A separate group of mice, however, was given access to a running wheel to use as they wanted.

Ingredients

* 1-1 1/2 lb cubed beef stew meat
* 1/2 cup flour
* 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
* 1/2 teaspoon pepper
* 1/4 cup vegetable oil
* 1 onion, chopped fine
* 1 carrot, chopped fine
* 1/4 cup finely chopped celery, with a few minced leaves
* 1 tablespoon dried parsley
* 1 pinch thyme
* 3 1/2 cups beef broth
* 2 medium potatoes, diced
* 2 carrots, diced
* 2 onions, diced

Directions

1. Put flour, salt and pepper in a large ziploc bag.
2. Heat oil over medium heat in a large dutch oven.
3. Place meat in bag with the flour and shake until well coated.
4. Shake off meat pieces and add them to the oil and stir until slightly browned, Add remaining flour from the bag and the finely chopped onion.
5. Stir until well browned.
6. Add finely chopped carrot and next 4 ingredients.

The Nielsen Company issued a report today on the top U.S. web brands and Internet usage in the U.S. As expected, Google is the #1 web brand based on unique audience.

For the larger web brands, users spend an average of 1 hour 53 minutes a month on Google (), 3 hours 8 minutes on Yahoo and 5 hours 24 minutes on Facebook (). The usage study compliments another Nielsen report issued yesterday that reported a 25% increase in online video viewing year-over-year.

clipper's remarks: Finally a common sense decision. When i read about this yesterday it made my blood boil and i did email the school. More people should express their pinions, sometimes it helps. Not that they paid any attention at all to my rambling. But i did point out that schools have gone to far. IT'S one thing to protect our kids but common sense needs to be used as well. Otherwise the terrorists did accomplish their mission by placing this country in such a paranoid state we may as well have let the Nazi's win. "Do as we say and like it" is what i thought we we fighting against in Arab world and other countries.
Point is never feel complacent and like anything you have to say don't matter. Maybe as single input it don't but when merged with hundreds of others people take notice.
Speak up and fight for what you think is right otherwise we are no longer a free country. Rather led by the hand being told what and what not to do.

Student Who Brought Camping Utensil to School Has Suspension Lifted

BEAR, Del. — A Delaware first-grader who was facing 45 days in an alternative school as punishment for taking his favorite camping utensil to school can return to class after the school board made a hasty change granting him a reprieve.

The seven-member Christina School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to reduce the punishment for kindergartners and first-graders who take weapons to school or commit violent offenses to a suspension ranging from three to five days.

Zachary Christie, 6, had faced 45 days in an alternative school for troublemakers after he took the utensil — a combination folding knife, fork and spoon — to school to eat lunch last month. Now, he could return Wednesday.

Finding character witnesses when you are 6 years old is not easy. But there was Zachary Christie last week at a school disciplinary committee hearing with his karate instructor and his mother’s fiancé by his side to vouch for him.

Zachary’s offense? Taking a camping utensil that can serve as a knife, fork and spoon to school.

He was so excited about recently joining the Cub Scouts that he wanted to use it at lunch.

School officials concluded that he had violated their zero-tolerance policy on weapons, and Zachary was suspended and now faces 45 days in the district’s reform school.

“It just seems unfair,” Zachary said, pausing as he practiced writing lower-case letters with his mother, who is home-schooling him while the family tries to overturn his punishment.

based on the code of conduct for the Christina School District, where Zachary is a first grader, school officials had no choice. They had to suspend him because, “regardless of possessor’s intent,” knives are banned.
