PB&J Bars

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup cold butter
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup jelly
1-2/3 cups peanut-butter chips, divided

Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease 9-inch-square baking pan. Mix together flour, sugar and baking powder. Cut in butter with fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg. Reserve 1 cup mixture; press remaining mixture onto bottom of prepared pan. Stir jelly to soften, and spread evenly over crust. Sprinkle 1 cup peanut-butter chips over jelly. Stir remaining 2/3 cup chips into reserved crumb mixture; sprinkle over top. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Cut into bars. — S.G., Louisiana

Wall Street capped its worst week ever with a wild session Friday that saw the Dow Jones industrials rocket within a 1,000 point range before closing with a relatively mild loss

The Dow lost 128 points, giving the blue chips an eight-day loss of just under 2,400. The average had its worst week on record in both point and percentage terms, as did the Standard & Poor's 500 index, the indicator most watched by market professionals.

The Dow fell 128.00, or 1.49 percent, to 8,451.49. At its low point Friday, the Dow was down 696 at 7,882.51, just 60 points above its low in Wall Street's last bear market, 7,286.27, reached Oct. 9, 2002.

The Dow has lost 1,874.19 points, or 18.2 percent, over the past week. Its dismal performance outdid the week that ended July 22, 1933, which saw a 17 percent drop — and back then, during the Great Depression, there were six trading days in a week.

Kenji Akasaka, 69, president of a local printing company, said he had never seen it this bad in the 40 years he has traded stocks. He said he invests mainly in blue-chips including Toyota Motor Corp. and Nintendo Co.

"There's no bottom to the stock markets now," said Francis Lun, general manager at Fulbright Securities Ltd. in Hong Kong. There's no clue when it will stop."

Analysts also said there's pressing need for the U.S. to quickly implement the $700 billion plan to buy up toxic mortgage-related securities from troubled banks and financial institutions that are at the core of problem.

Chocolate Florentine Cookies

From Nestle Classic Recipes

2/3 cup butter

2 cups quick oats

1 cup granulated sugar

2/3 cup all purpose flour

1/4 cup light or dark corn syrup

1/4 cup milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 tsp salt

11 oz package chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or foil.

Melt butter in a medium saucepan; remove from heat. Stir in oats, sugar, flour, corn syrup, milk, vanilla extract and salt; mix well. Drop by level teaspoons, about 3 inches apart, onto prepared baking sheets. Spread thinly with a spatula.

Bake for 6 to 8 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely on baking sheets placed on wire racks. Peel foil from cookies.

Carefully melt chocolate in the microwave, stirring every 10 to 20 seconds. Spread a thin layer of melted chocolate onto flat side of half the cookies. Top with remaining cookies.

Makes about 3 1/2 dozen sandwich cookies.

He and the rest of the band are inside a London cinema talking to reporters after a press screening of their new film, 'Live At The Apollo'.

"It's like when you see a photo of yourself and think, 'I look a bit s**t'," O'Malley adds.

The film in question is a feature-length recording of their end of tour gig at the Manchester Apollo, shot live earlier in the year. "It's actually called 'live' at the Apollo," chips in drummer Matt Helders. "We live there."

True to form for this band, the 76-minute long film is a minimalist affair. No video diaries or backstage tours here, save for a bit of Super 8 shot by the band themselves. The band didn't want to make a documentary because they felt it too intrusive.

"It's different playing live to doing a fly on the wall thing. This were with people we know," says frontman Alex Turner in his Sheffield accent.

Helders adds: "We were aware of the cameras being there but we just put up with it. It was a bit different to doing a normal show though."

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/2 C Flour
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
1/2 C Softened Butter
1 1/2 C Sugar
1 C Canned Pumpkin
1 tsp Vanilla
1 Egg

1 C Chocolate Chips

Cream butter and sugar together.

Add pumpkin, vanilla and egg. Beat until the mixture is light and creamy.

Mix all dry ingredients together well in a bowl.

Add dry ingredients to wet and mix well.

Fold or gently mix in chocolate chips.

Drop by the rounded teaspoonful onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes (until lightly browned).

1 cup pumpkin
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon milk
1 cup chocolate chips

1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees

Dissolve baking soda in milk and set aside. In large bowl whisk together pumpkin, sugar, oil, vanilla, and egg.

In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture and then. Stir in the baking powder mixture and then chocolate chips. Spoon onto cookie sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until done.

Cause-related marketing can increase sales as much as 74% in certain consumer-goods categories, and consumers spend twice as long looking at cause-related ads than generic corporate ones, according to a study by Cone and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

After participants were exposed to either a cause-related or a generic corporate ad for one of four focus brands in the toothpaste, shampoo, chips and light-bulb categories, they entered a mock convenience store with nearly 150 SKUs and were given real money to purchase a product of each type.

There was a 74% increase in actual purchases of a shampoo brand after it had been associated with a cause. Nearly half (47%) of participants who saw the cause-related message chose the brand, while only 27% of those who saw the generic corporate ad chose the brand.

The American military faces a growing threat of potentially fatal equipment failure—and even foreign espionage—because of counterfeit computer components used in warplanes, ships, and communication networks. Fake microchips flow from unruly bazaars in rural China to dubious kitchen-table brokers in the U.S. and into complex weapons. Senior Pentagon officials publicly play down the danger, but government documents, as well as interviews with insiders, suggest possible connections between phony parts and breakdowns.

In November 2005, a confidential Pentagon-industry program that tracks counterfeits issued an alert that "BAE Systems experienced field failures," meaning military equipment malfunctions, which the large defense contractor traced to

fake microchips. Chips are the tiny electronic circuits found in computers and other gear.

1 package (3.4 oz) instant pudding mix, Vanilla or French Vanilla
1 egg, lightly beaten
5 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients except chocolate chips.

Stir in chips.

Form small balls of dough; place on unbaked baking sheet.

These cookies don't spread, so you may want to flatten a bit.

Bake in preheated 350° oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Makes about 18 cookies.

BOSTON — Deborah Anderson had heard the urban legends about the contraceptive effectiveness of Coca-Cola products for years.

So she and her colleagues decided to put the soft drink to the test. In the lab, that is.

For discovering that, yes indeed, Coke was a spermicide, Anderson and her team are among this year's winners of the Ig Nobel prize, the annual award given by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine to oddball but often surprisingly practical scientific achievements.

The ceremony at Harvard University, in which actual Nobel laureates bestow the awards, also honored a British psychologist who found foods that sound better taste better; a group of researchers who discovered exotic dancers make more money when they are at peak fertility; and a pair of Brazilian archaeologists who determined armadillos can change the course of history.
