Hacker blows Chinese coverup of gymnist's age

A determined U.S. computer expert has delved into cached pages on the Internet to unearth Chinese official documents showing a gymnast who took gold in the uneven bars competition, edging the U.S.'s Nastia Liukin, may indeed be underage.

First he simply tried Google, only to find that an official listing by the Chinese sports administration that had given her age could no longer be accessed. Then he tried the Google cache, only to find that He’s name had been removed.

Finally, he tried the cache of Chinese search engine Baidu. There, he found that Baidu lists two spreadsheets in He's name, both giving her date of birth as January 1, 1994 — making her 14 years and 220 days old and too young to compete at the Beijing games.

The lists were compiled by the General Administration of Sport of China.

Arthritis
In a 4-week double blind study of 70 patients with osteoarthritis, and 31 with rheumatoid arthritis, it was concluded that capsaicin cream is a safe and effective treatment for arthritis.
Another double blind study suggest that capsaicin is a safe and potentially useful treatment for painful osteoarthritis of the hands.

Digestive Health
Cayenne has been, and is still used for digestive problems in traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Ayurvedic medicines.
Studies have shown cayenne, or the ingredient capsaicin, to be effective in relieving the symptoms of dyspepsia.

Pain Relief
Capsaicin from cayenne peppers is used effectively in many areas of pain relief.

Chinese bank now world's most profitable

HONG KONG — Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., the world's biggest bank with a market value of $235-billion (U.S.), posted a 41 per cent increase in second-quarter profit, buoyed by widening interest margins and fee income growth.

Like most Asian banks, ICBC's subprime-related holdings in the West are small relative to its size, leaving the sector relatively unscathed by the fallout from the U.S. subprime crisis that has battered western peers.

The bank also said it held bonds related to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the troubled U.S. mortgage agencies, totalling $2.7-billion, or a fifth of 1 per cent of its total assets.

ICBC's Hong Kong shares have fallen 8.6 per cent so far this year, outperforming a 26.7 per cent drop in the benchmark Hang Seng Index amid a rout in global equity markets.

I’m a wimp when it comes to bugs. So when an exceptionally large grasshopper made its way onto my blanket recently as I was lounging at the park, I was a little surprised that I didn’t have a panic attack. But this particular grasshopper was beautiful, and his features were so large that it felt like he was actually staring at me, willing me to strike up a conversation with him. Though he eventually hopped away, I couldn’t stop thinking about his gigantic body, so I did some research online to find out if my grasshopper was as big as I thought he was. Turns out, he’s a bit of a pipsqueak compared to some of these giant insects. Though I can appreciate the beauty and grandeur of these insects, I’m thankful that none of them landed on my blanket that day.

On August 17, the two elderly women each received a document from the city authorities ordering them to serve one year of re-education through labour – an administrative punishment that does not require any judicial process – from July 30 this year to July 29, 2009 for “disturbing public order”. Li Xuehui, son of of Mrs Wu, said: ”Wang Xiuying is almost blind and crippled. What sort of re-education through labour can she serve? Two elderly women who applied five times to demonstrate in China’s Olympic protest parks against the demolition of their homes have been ordered to serve one year of re-education through labour, a human rights group said.

August 20, 2008

Wu Dianyuan, 79, and Wang Xiuying, 77, have been petitioning the government ever since they were forcibly evicted from their homes in Beijing in 2001 as part of a series of huge renovation projects across the city.

The pair applied five times between August 5 and August 18 to the Beijing city Public Security Bureau for permission to demonstrate in the newly designated protest parks. The two women, formerly neighbours, wanted to protest against their forced eviction from their homes seven years ago. Their application was neither granted nor denied and on August 5 they were held for 10 hours for questioning by the police, the son of one of the women told Human Rights in China.

Two Women Sentenced to ‘Re-education’ in China

BEIJING — Two elderly Chinese women have been sentenced to a year of “re-education through labor” after they repeatedly sought a permit to demonstrate in one of the official Olympic protest areas, according to family members and human rights advocates.

The women, Wu Dianyuan, 79, and Wang Xiuying, 77, had made five visits to the police this month in an effort to get permission to protest what they contended was inadequate compensation for the demolition of their homes in Beijing.

The authorities, however, have refused to explain what happened to applicants who disappeared after they submitted their paperwork. Among these, Gao Chuancai, a farmer from northeast China who was hoping to publicize government corruption, was forcibly escorted back to his hometown last week and remains in custody.

It all feels somewhat like this year's version of the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Berlin. Admittedly, Hitler didn't invade Czechoslovakia until three years after his Olympics.

The face of the 2008 Olympics varies from the sometimes disturbing, swarming and beehive-like orderliness of Beijing's opening ceremonies and then descends into the ominously goose-stepping precision of Red Chinese military flag-bearers. Initially the Olympics flag was born by adorably costumed children, but then handed-over to Red Chinese soldiers -- as if being a part of that provocative military style was the eventual fate for all Chinese children.

Just when the Free World is playing "hands-across-the-ping-pong-table" with the Red Chinese Giant, that other, formerly Communist and now neo-Soviet Russia is ready to re-instate the Cold War.

How much did -- and does -- China know of Russia's full, expansionist intentions?
