Shanghai World Financial Center Opens becomes 2nd tallest building in the world

Shanghai will open the world’s third-tallest skyscraper to the public tomorrow (August 30th 2008) , 14 years after the project began.

Total investment in the 101-story, 492-meter-high landmark project, located in Pudong’s Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, amounts to over eight billion Yuan (1.16 billion U.S. dollars).

This building will be the 2nd highest completed building in the world behind the Taipei 101. The Burj Dubai once completed will push this building to 3rd place.

Bank of China has cut its portfolio of securities issued or guaranteed by troubled US mortgage financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by a quarter since the end of June.

The sale by China’s fourth largest commercial bank, which reduced its holdings of so-called agency debt by $4.6bn, is a sign of nervousness among foreign buyers of Fannie and Freddie’s bonds and guaranteed securities.

Although every Chinese child is taught the legend of Yue Fei, a 12th-century general whose mother tattooed “serve the country with utmost loyalty” on his back, tattoos were considered disreputable in China for centuries. Imperial courts tattooed criminals’ faces before sending them into exile. By the 1949 revolution, the tattoo was the favored mark of crime syndicates and subsequently condemned by the Communist Party. Today, tattoos remain taboo for many of China’s elder generation, which sneers at the sight of a sun or lotus inked on the back of a trendy neighbor.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - A newborn baby abandoned outdoors in winter by her 14-year-old mother was found safe in a dog pen with a mother dog and her brood of puppies near the city of La Plata, Argentine media reported on Friday.

Farmer Fabio Anze found the naked baby girl on Thursday, being kept warm among his dog China's puppies, La Nacion newspaper said. Anze called the police and the baby was taken to a hospital.

Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero hospital, told television and newspaper reporters that the baby was just a few hours old when she was found, and was in good health although she had some bruises.

It was not clear whether the mother left her baby in the dog's pen or whether the dog found the baby outdoors and carried it in to join her puppies.

Winged cats have been known to exist since the 19th century, but only a handful of people have actually seen—let alone owned—one. This woman in Sichuan province watched as her beloved kitty grew angel wings on his back last summer after a bunch of female cats tried to mate with him. "Many female cats in heat came to harass him, and then the wings started to grow," she said.

Geneticists have a less romantic theory. They believe it could be a genetic defect, a skin condition, or the result of poor grooming.

Por causa de problemas na pele, possivelmente causados por condições genéticas, e crescimento anormal da pelagem, o bichano desenvolveu as duas pequenas formações nas costas, que se assemelham a asas.

A dona do gato, no entanto, acredita que o gato foi exposto à poluição e sofreu estresse por ter sido 'cortejado demais' por fêmeas no cio.

"Ele é um anjo, e não um demônio", afirma a dona, em entrevista à agência de notícias HUashang. "Anjo", inclusive, é o apelido do animal.

De acordo com especialistas consultados pela revista Cryptozoology, as deformidades não prejudicam a vida normal do gato.

Eigenaresse Feng zegt dat haar kat in eerste instantie twee knobbeltjes kreeg, maar dat deze na een paar maanden uitgroeiden tot vleugels. Volgens oma Feng ontwikkelde haar kat vleugels nadat hij seksueel was belaagd door krolse katten.

Aan een kat in China groeien twee vleugels. De een jaar oude kater uit de plaats Xianyang bezit twee harige vleugel-achtige uitgroeiingen van zo'n tien centimeter lang.

Chinese experts denken eerder aan een genmutatie waarvan het beest zelf geen last zal hebben. Vliegen kan de kat vooralsnog ook niet.

Sending Your Data To China

Did you ever bring your Mac back to Apple for service? You might be amazed at what they do with it. Thanks to Liquid Matrix for pointing this out.

The Apple Repair Terms and Conditions agreement says that they may have to send your data abroad in order to fix your computer:

It's not 100% clear what "data" is being protected here. Is it your personal data, like your name and e-mail address, which seems to be the sort of data described in the aforementioned privacy policy? Or could it also mean everything on the hard drive? What else could they send to the PRC for repair other than the data on your hard drive? The privacy policy isn't really written to address such data, but clearly there's a general spirit in it to the effect that Apple will take all reasonable measures to protect your data. Even from the People's Republic of China.

China agrees $3bn Iraq oil deal

Iraq and China have agreed the terms of a $3 billion oil service contract, Iraq's oil minister says, announcing the first major oil contract with a foreign firm since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

The deal means China has taken the first opening since the US-led invasion for work on the world's third-largest reserves.

Hussain al-Shahristani, Iraq's oil minister, warned that time was running out for big Western oil firms, which have jostled for years for Iraqi contracts, to seal even the short-term deals that were expected to mark their return to the country.

Iraq and China's state-oil firm CNPC agreed the renegotiated terms of an old deal signed in 1997 to pump oil from the Adhab oilfield, Shahristani said.

CNPC is Asia's biggest oil and gas company.

"Finally we have reached an agreement," Shahristani said after clinching the deal.

Tough bargains

Iraq has toughened the terms, changing the contract to a set-fee service deal from the oil production sharing agreement signed under Saddam.

DUSHANBE, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's president said on Thursday he expects China and other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to support Russia's role in Georgia following the recent conflict.

Western powers have warned Russia that it faces "international isolation" over its continued security presence in Georgia, three weeks on from Tbilisi's attack on breakaway South Ossetia, and over its recognition of Georgia's rebel regions as independent.

Dmitry Medvedev, in Tajikistan for a two-day SCO summit, said: "We are confident that the position of SCO member states will produce an appropriate resonance through the international community, and I hope this will give a serious signal to those who are trying to justify the aggression that was committed."

The security bloc, seen as a counterweight to NATO's influence in Eurasia, comprises China, Russia, and four Central Asian states - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Quake Victims in China Rally From Painful Losses

CHENGDU, China — Far from Beijing and its gathering of Olympic athletes, a small group of people here spend hours each day pushing their own physical limits.

Some are missing an arm or a leg. Others lost even more. They are all victims of the earthquake that devastated Sichuan Province in southwest China on May 12, and they are here at a medical center to learn to use prosthetic limbs.

The vast majority of the patients are victims of the 7.9-magnitude quake that left nearly 70,000 people dead and 18,000 missing.

The patients spend one to two months here, first training for a week before getting a new limb, then learning how to use it.
