The 20-year contract is part of a raft of deals Iraq is close to formalizing in a bid to catapult itself to the world’s third largest oil producer after decades of war and economic decline.

ExxonMobil, partnering Royal Dutch Shell, beat Russia’s LUKOIL – which had teamed up with US oil-major ConocoPhillips – and two other groups led by France’s Total and China’s CNPC.

“This is better for us,” the Iraqi oil official said.

The pact on West Qurna comes after British oil major BP Plc. and China’s CNPC on Tuesday signed an agreement for the Rumaila oil field: Iraq’s first major new oil deal since the 2003 US-led invasion.

A group led by Italian oil major Eni also signed an initial agreement on Monday to develop the Zubair oilfield, and Iraq said it also expected to ink an agreement with Nippon Oil Corp on Nassiriya in the coming days.

Women fuming because they still see it as a man’s world can finally take it out on the Man himself. Or one of them, at least.

Digital Spy reports that Chinese gym coach Xiao Lin has launched a part-time career as a punching bag for stressed-out women.

Lin hails from Shenyang in northeast China’s Liaoning province and has not yet informed his family of his second job, according to the Liaoshen Evening Post.

“The first woman was about 25 years old. She paid for half an hour but soon got tired and spent the rest of her time just chatting to me,” Lin says. “The second customer also only lasted for a few minutes but they both looked much happier afterwards. It does people good to let off some steam.”

For anyone who’s interested, Lin reportedly charges 100 yuan (about $15) for a 30-minute bash-fest.

On Nov. 1, Beijing had its earliest snow ever. And then the China Daily reported that the Beijing Weather Modification Office, a unit of the National Meteorological Centre in China induced another storm by seeding clouds with chemicals a little more than a week later.

how about a study on the long-term effects of being an artificial rainmaker?

The biggest worry is the law of unintended consequences. The AFP report notes that no one knows how weather manipulation will change the sky.

One thing is clear: More research is needed and it’s not coming anytime soon.

A photograph purporting to show a 55ft snake found in a forest in China has become an internet sensation.

It was originally posted in a thread on the website of the People's Daily, the official Communist Party newspaper in China.

The thread claimed the snake was one of two enormous boas found by workers clearing forest for a new road outside Guping city, Jiangxi province.

They apparently woke up the sleeping snakes during attempts to bulldoze a huge mound of earth.

"On the third dig, the operator found there was blood amongst the soil, and with a further dig, a dying snake appeared," said the post.

"At the same time, another gold coloured giant boa appeared with its mouth wide open. The driver was paralysed with fear, while the other workers ran for their lives.

"By the time the workers came back, the wounded boa had died, while the other snake had disappeared. The bulldozer operator was so sick that he couldn't even stand up."

In a world still awash in economic worry, China has stood apart as the one country that has come through the global slump with only the briefest of hiccups.

Last quarter the nation grew at a brisk 8.9% rate, and many economists expect it to expand even faster over the remainder of the year. Profits at large, state-owned companies that have benefited from Beijing's aggressive stimulus program are up sharply.

A lot of global CEOs, of course, are on the thank-God-for-China bandwagon, and it might seem a little churlish to question one of the world's few good-news economic stories. Yet a growing number of observers believe that China is creating its own bubble economy. And they have a case to make.

The U.S. fueled its housing and consumption bubbles by providing easy credit. China seems headed in the same direction, although the victims would be different this time.

Chinese scientists have artificially induced the second major snowstorm to wreak havoc in Beijing this season, state media said, reigniting debate over the practice of tinkering with Mother Nature.

After the earliest snow to hit the capital in 22 years fell on November 1, the capital has again been shrouded in white, with more snow expected in the coming three days, the National Meteorological Centre said.

The China Daily, citing an unnamed official, said the Beijing Weather Modification Office had artificially induced both storms by seeding clouds with chemicals, a practice that can increase precipitation by up to 20 per cent.

The office refused to comment on the report when contacted. On Tuesday, an official had said the storm was "natural".

City weather officials have previously said that such methods are aimed at alleviating a drought over much of north China, including Beijing, that has lingered for more than a decade.

China To Stop Shock Therapy On Internet Addicts

BEIJING (AP) - China's Health Ministry has ordered a hospital to stop using electric shock therapy to cure youths of Internet addiction, saying there was no scientific evidence it worked.

Linyi Mental Health Hospital in eastern Shandong province used the treatment as part of a four-month program that has so far treated nearly 3,000 youths, the China Youth Daily newspaper has reported, citing the psychiatrist who runs it, Yang Yongxin.

The ministry said in a statement posted on its Web site late Monday there is no domestic or international clinical evidence that electric shock therapy helps cure Internet addiction. Electric shock therapy is most often used to treat severe depression.

Chinese psychologists say symptoms of Internet addiction include being online more than six hours a day - playing games and looking at pornography rather than working or studying - and getting angry when unable to get online.

Today it is the Americans who now find themselves in Afghanistan, fighting the sons of the people they once armed. It is the free-market model of Thatcher and Reagan that seems to lie in ruins

Navajo Wind Energy Corp. (the "Company" and formerly Caliber Energy Inc.) (PINKSHEETS: CLBN) announces today that it has taken delivery of 10 of the 53 wind turbines per the manufacturing supply agreement with China Lao Gaixian Wind L.P., represented by PCA Wind Power OA Inc., for its 120.80 MW wind farm project in Liaoning Province, China (the "China Lao Gaixian Project").

The Agreement includes provisions for supplying the China Lao Gaixian Project with 53 complete wind turbines, as well as testing and commissioning services. The Agreement also provides for operations and maintenance services to be provided to China Lao Gaixian Wind L.P. over a two-year period. This agreement is anticipated to result in approximately US$65 million in revenue over its duration.
