CAIRO — Actress Lucy Liu, who has produced a film about children sold into the sex trade in Cambodia, says the fight against human trafficking will be long.

That assessment rings true in the Middle East, where stigma in conservative societies and a lack of data have frustrated activists' efforts. Highlighting those challenges, organizers of several UNICEF-funded programs Liu visited in Egypt did not even want to make details of their efforts public out of fear doing so would stir up controversy and pressure from conservatives.

In Egypt, the sex trade is often hidden under the guise of temporary marriages sanctioned by some religious figures and local authorities. Under these marriages, hundreds of underage girls in rural Egypt are essentially sold by their families for large sums to wealthy visitors from Gulf nations.

Egypt recently passed its first child protection law, which criminalized trafficking and raised the age of marriage to 18.

Bad accident in Calgary involving school bus leaves children with cuts, bruises

CALGARY - As many as three dozen elementary school students are being treated for cuts and bruises after a bad accident in Calgary between their bus and a minivan.

The bus appears to have jumped the curb and smashed into a tree in front of a house in the city's northwest.

Homeowner Marilyn Gunn says she heard a loud bang and ran to see what had happened.

She says she and a neighbour managed to help the screaming children out of the smashed-up bus.

Both drivers were seriously injured, but are stable in hospital.

Insp. Curtis Olson said police received a call around 8:15 a.m. about a collision between the two.

In 2006, British soldier Martin Webster hit the headlines after being involved in a media scandal when he filmed British troops in Iraq beating up Iraqi youths

“Once the children started using grenades and firing RPGs, they certainly became a threat to our lives. Our underlying issue as infantry soldiers is to preserve life – our lives and civilians around. So once you pick up a weapon and you are going to use it – you become a target for us to either be captured, arrested or killed.”

“When video cameras became widely available I do not think that the [British] government accounted for the fact that the public is going to see how horrific the war is,” remembers Webster. “You’re fighting kids [in Iraq]. People find it very hard that their Western boys are fighting children. That is the horrible fact of war. Those bombers were in their teens.” He added that the notorious clip with British soldiers beating up Iraqi youth destroyed his life.

Eighth-graders Cassandra and Aliyah Russell of Chicago never imagined they'd be arrested in their school cafeteria, much less for throwing food.

But that's just what happened following lunchtime mayhem last Thursday at the Perspectives Charter Middle School, south of Chicago. More than two dozen students, ages 11 to 15, were rounded up by police, arrested and charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct.

"They took us to jail, fingerprinted us, mugshotted us, or whatever, all because of a food fight...I was arrested. Handcuffs on," 13-year-old Cassandra told ABC News.

"We were suspended, went to jail and now have to go to court," said 14-year-old Aliyah.

The sisters' mother, Erica, told ABC News she's stunned.

"Who does that? Lock children up for throwing a carrot, a biscuit, milk, Jello," she said. "Who does that?"

The Russell sisters returned to school today after finishing a three-day suspension for their part in the food fight.

Mercury Rule Suspended for Swine-Flu Vaccines

Recently in The Seattle Times: In what could prove to be a controversial decision, Washington’s Health Department has allowed swine-flu vaccinations to be carried out while temporarily suspending a rule that limits the amount of thimerosal, a mercury preservative, in vaccines given to pregnant women and children under the age of 3. This means that the swine-flu vaccine will be given to these populations despite some fears that thimerosal can cause autism in children.

Nearly 200 million children in developing countries suffer from stunted growth and health problems due to poor nutrition in their early years, the UN children's foundation UNICEF says.

However, the percentage of children with retarded growth in Asia fell to 30 per cent last year from 44 per cent in 1990, and in Africa to 34 per cent from 38 per cent over the same period, UNICEF said in a report.

Despite a decline in the rate of the problem, 195 million children under five years old in developing countries have stunted growth due to poor nutrition during the critical period between their conception and second birthdays, UNICEF said.

Undernourished children often have poor physical health and slower mental development.

When the problem is widespread, as in India and Afghanistan, it undermines those countries' ability to improve their economies and eradicate poverty.

"Undernutrition steals a child's strength and makes illnesses that the body might otherwise fight off far more dangerous,"

Before our adoption, pregnant friends rubbed their bellies and said: “The older they are the more problems you’ll have.” “You must feel desperate,” one said. “Do you think they’re even capable of loving you?”  I didn’t think those things but struggled with one other unofficial yet painfully true reasons of why I wanted an older child, not a baby. I looked down on those other mothers, so engrossed in their children they couldn’t even talk on the phone let alone brush their hair. I wouldn’t be trapped, not like them, for 18-plus years. I mean, what if the kid never left? Ultimately, however, I was ashamed. Babies, with their hands the size of rose petals and toes like creamy pebbles were natural. My lack of maternal instinct was not.    

I’m not going to lie: 2009 was the year I looked forward to ever since I became a mother. It’s what gave me the courage to have my girls in the first place—knowing someday they’d leave.

A General Idea on Passports for children

Special forms are there and every child must come into view in person to apply, together with both parents. Then parents have to submit photocopies of documents in specific government-approved forms (i.e. on 8 ½ by 11 white paper—“The 8 1/2 x 11" paper size cannot be substituted with a larger or smaller size paper, even though the alternative folds down to the 8 1/2 x 11" size. Tough love breeds smart kids

A new study in the United Kingdom has found that children whose parents take a "tough love" approach are better prepared to achieve in life.

The research by think tank Demos tracked the lives of 9,000 families over eight years.

The head of the research team, Sonia Sodha, says the tough love style of parenting combines warmth and discipline, and is far more important in a child's success than parents' income or social background.

"Parents are able to set rules, apply them consistently and fairly and that means that children know what the boundaries are to their behaviour," she said.

Ms Sodha says tough love parenting helps children to develop key skills such as emotion control and empathy.

"They are skills that we've termed character capabilities, and what I mean when I say that is skills like self-regulation, so being able to regulate your own emotions in difficult circumstances," she said.
