Army Vet Seen in Iconic Photo Dies of Overdose

An Army medic who became famous for being photographed in 2003 carrying an Iraqi child to safety has died at the age of thirty-one after overdosing on a computer cleaner aerosol. Army Specialist Joseph Dwyer had been struggling with post-traumatic stress syndrome. After he returned from Iraq, his marriage fell apart, and he spiraled into substance abuse and depression. When my son was a baby I read a book called "How to raise a brighter child", by Joan Beck.

Despite the pompous name it is the smartest book on child education I read. One of the advices that I've never forgot was to buy toys that are 5% toy and 95% child. So we bought him Legos, books, other things that make him work. He only had a folding umbrolla for a carriage and second hand clothes.

My son is now 33, graduated with honors from an Ivy League school, decided that he didn't want to work in front of a computer eight hours a day, and went to grad school where he studied architecture.

He doesn't own a TV set, and is the most moral person I know.

Parents should spend more time on the floor with their kids or reading them Dr. Seuss books and less time driving their SUVs to stores and shop for ridiculous stuff.

The sad saga of a soldier from Long Island

The March 2003 image became one of the most iconic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq: that of a bespectacled American soldier carrying an Iraqi child to safety. The photograph of Army Pfc. Joseph Dwyer, who was raised in Mount Sinai, was used by news outlets around the world.

After being lionized by many as the human face of the U.S. effort to rebuild a troubled Iraq, Dwyer brought the battlefield home with him, often grappling violently with delusions that he was being hunted by Iraqi killers.

The war that made him a hero at 26 haunted him to the last moments of his life.

"He loved the picture, don't get me wrong, but he just couldn't get over the war," his mother, Maureen Dwyer, said by telephone from her home in Sunset Beach, N.C. "He wasn't Joseph anymore. Joseph never came home."

"Talking to him, he knew he was going to die," Maureen Dwyer said.

But if you’re worried that you need an expert, in the form of personal trainers or organized programs, rest assured that it’s much simpler than that. For young children, the best strength training involves the use of their own body weight in activities they’d be doing anyway…like running and jumping, pumping higher and higher on a swing, climbing the monkey bars, or playing tug-of-war. Yes, this might seem old-fashioned. But if you’re like me, these were the kinds of activities you were doing when you were a kid…and there was no childhood obesity crisis back then.

Father Allegedly Shoots Wife, Kidnaps Son, Then Gets Hit by Bus

A desperate five-day search for a 9-year-old boy abducted by his father in Southern California ended in Mexico, where the man died after being hit by a bus and the boy was found safe across town, authorities said Monday.

He had been missing since Wednesday, when his father, Lonnie Ramos, 46, allegedly shot his estranged wife during a custody exchange and took off with their child.

Gynnae Ramos, the boy's mother, was in good condition Monday at Mission Hospital, where she was recovering from gunshot wounds to the chest, stomach and right eye, Amormino said. Her son was taken to her bedside, he said.

Lonnie Ramos called his father in Washington, D.C., around 11 a.m. Sunday to say that he had left the boy at the church building and that he, too, was in Ciudad Juarez.

Lonnie Ramos was hit by a bus at 2:35 p.m. Sunday while crossing one of the city's busiest streets and died on the way to the hospital.
