Increasingly, nearly all forms of discipline appear morally suspect.

So what should you do when a child throws a tantrum? Many parents, determined not to be cruel or counterproductive, latch on to pre-approved language from books. Walk through a Manhattan playground and you’ll hear parents responding to their dirt-throwing, swing-stealing offspring with a studied flatness. A toddler whirling into a rage is quietly instructed, “Use your words.” A preschooler who clocks his classmate is offered the vaguely Zen incantation “Hands are not for hitting.”

A French shoe designer is being called on the carpet for a comment he made calling Barbie fat - specifically her ankles.

The iconic, incredible Barbie is now a bigger fashion symbol than ever. In fact, some in the fashion world seem to think she's too big.

Stiletto maker Christian Louboutin is re-designing a fashion Barbie set to come out next year, and according to Women's Wear Daily, found her ankles a bit too fat for his taste, so he re-shaped the doll's feet.

"Are you serious? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," Brooklyn resident Depelsha McGruder said.

And though most people seemed to take this as a big joke, child psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Gardere doesn't.

"They idolize their dolls. They get ideas as to body image, self esteem, self perception by playing with the dolls," Dr. Gardere said.

'I always thought people who commit such serious offences like rape automatically go to prison - yet this boy was allowed to go free. He was even allowed back onto the estate where he lived.

'In my eyes if someone commits an adult or grown up crime then they should serve an adult or grown up sentence - not be molecoddled by the courts and told to get treatment.

'My son is six years old now but as a result of what happened his childhood innocence has probably been robbed. Heaven only knows what effect it will have in him in the years to come.

Child rapist strikes again days after being let off because victim's Christian family forgave him

A top judge is at the centre of an investigation after he freed a child rapist who then kidnapped and raped another youngster just eight days later.

Judge Adrian Smith had spared the 16-year old sex attacker a jail term after his first victim's family, who are devout Christians, forgave the teenager.

But just days after the boy was placed on a community order amid protests from prosecutors and police, he lured a five-year-old boy from the front of his home and raped him nearby.

During his horrific ordeal the terrified victim was forced to commit a series of sex acts before being given a Star Wars light sabre toy as a 'reward' for keeping quiet.

Judge Smith, who earns £128,000 a year, allowed the 16-year-old to go free after hearing statements from the first victim's father (photo posed by model)

I recently stopped to congratulate a young mother pushing her toddler in a stroller. The woman had been talking to her barely verbal daughter all the way up the block, pointing out things they had passed, asking questions like “What color are those flowers?” and talking about what they would do when they got to the park.

This is a rare occurrence in my Brooklyn neighborhood, I told her. All too often, the mothers and nannies I see are tuned in to their cellphones, BlackBerrys and iPods, not their young children.

Parents have stopped having good communications with their young children, causing them to lose out on the eye contact, facial expression and overall feedback that is essential for early communication development.

Specify what you want the child to do and prompt the behavior with clear instructions, model the desired behavior yourself and shape it at first by helping the child to do it properly, and arrange for the child to engage in as much reinforced practice of the behavior as possible until it takes root as an enduring habit.

hen this usually reliable approach hits a snag like the one described above, the therapists at the clinic have found success in solving the problem by taking what appears to be the opposite approach. They direct the parents to temporarily back off almost entirely: to stop asking their child to do the desired behavior and say it's OK not to do it at all, stop offering praise or other rewards for doing it, and mask their attitude of engaged enthusiasm or frustrated rage with an appearance of bland disinterest in whether the child does it or not.
