The half sister of Cindy McCain, wife of presidential candidate John McCain, has died of Alzheimer's disease, the family announced.

Dixie Lea Burd, 74, died on Tuesday in Phoenix. She had been in a nursing home for the past two years, and Cindy McCain arranged for her to go into hospice care, son Bob Burd said.

Cindy McCain and Dixie Burd had the same mother. Marguerite "Dixie" Johnson married Cindy McCain's father, the late James Hensley, in 1945.

Three million dollars? If the benefit to the "children" is so great, let the parents of Chicago, the parents of Illinois or, BEST YET, the people who attend such science events, AS I OFTEN DID AT THE AMAZING CHICAGO MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY pay for it. My parents took me to that museum, with the submarine and the NYC apartment sized washing machine. I think we paid, like, an ADMISSION AT THE DOOR.
Last year I could not come CLOSE to paying for the Health care I was prescribed. I could not come close to affording my medication. Frankly, I could not care less about a parent actually having to pay a dollar a child to get into the museum where people suffering FAR WORSE than I am could use that money simply to LIVE AND BREATHE.

I am an Associate Professor of Astronomy at the University of Chicago (the University that today has added yet another Nobel Prize winner in the sciences for the US). I would like to comment on Sen. McCain's statement during the today's debate that Sen. Obama has earmarked "$3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Ill. My friends, do we need to spend that kind of money?"

The way Sen. McCain has phrased it suggests that Sen. Obama approved spending $3 million on an old-fashioned piece of office equipment (overhead projector).

The 3 million is actually for an upgrade of the SkyTheater - a full dome projection system, which is probably the main attraction of the Adler Planetarium and is quite sophisticated and impressive piece of equipment.

I find it appalling that Sen. McCain would call a science education tool for public (largely children) for
a historic planetarium with millions of visitors a year a wasteful earmark.

Police raid "baby farm" in Nigeria

Police have raided a private hospital in Nigeria where they suspect new-born babies were being sold to traffickers.

Police found the hospital in the south-eastern town of Enugu, when a 17-year-old girl escaped.

Four people - two nurses and the hospital's owners - have been arrested in connection with the "baby farm", police said.

Seven pregnant young women discovered in the hospital during the raid are now in the care of the state government.

State police commissioner Sani Magaji told the BBC Hausa service that a 17-year-old who was days away from giving birth had escaped from the hospital.

The women, according to the police, had spent up to six months in the hospital, waiting to give birth.

Their babies would be sold for as little as 15,000 naira ($127, £72), the police said.

It is suspected the babies were to be sold to traffickers who sell children into forced labour or prostitution.

Poor, unmarried women face tough choices if they get pregnant in Nigeria.

Thousands of refugee children, some as young as three, are being found abandoned at UK ports and airports.

Often orphaned and from wartorn countries, the youngsters are packed off by relatives unable to care for them.

More than 3,500 arrived last year and the numbers look set to top 4,000 this year, a rate of around 75 a week.

Around a third of the children coming into Britain without parents or family are from
Afghanistan, with many also arriving from Iran, China, Eritrea and Somalia.

Concerns over asylum-seeking children and teenagers have been growing while the numbers of adult asylum seekers remain much lower than during the early 2000s.

The top ten nationalities of unaccompanied child asylum seekers in 2007 were:

Mark had always been well behaved in nursery school. But in primary school, he had become a nightmare. Regular bouts of hurling himself at other children and attacking equipment, combined with an inability to sit still and failure to respond to instructions had led to the dreaded words Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. The school indicated that Mark may have to be assessed for ADHD and the medication Ritalin prescribed.

This week, new guidelines from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence pronouncing that Ritalin (which acts by stimulating the central nervous system and can have a calming and focusing effect) should be prescribed with greater care, seem to suggest that they were right to be wary.

My experience over many years in the field of child development and psychology has led me to believe that one size does not fit all

Work and play often commingle in Kitezh, an experimental orphan community about 190 miles southwest of Moscow that combines features of an orphanage with those of foster care. With its colorful wooden cottages, Kitezh appears as distant from the cruelty of the children's frequently alcoholic and abusive parents as it is from the stale, often crowded government institutions where many Russian orphans still live.

The founders of Kitezh hope that their village can be a model of reform for Russia's decrepit child welfare system, little changed since Soviet days. Though perhaps hard to replicate on a large scale, Kitezh still stands as one of the few largely successful alternatives here to institutional care for orphans.

Today, there are about half a dozen houses built in Russian-folk style, a school, a communal dining hall and a small Orthodox church.

Murder accused Mayra Rosales too big for courtroom

A 400KG woman accused of crushing her toddler nephew to death is too big to fit in the court room that will try her, her lawyer says.

Texas woman Mayra Rosales, who suffers from a rare thyroid condition, is charged with the murder of Eliseo Gonzalez, 18 months, at her home.

A post-mortem examination on the toddler, who died in March, showed his skull was crushed.

Ms Rosales, 27, who is bedridden, says she accidentally fell on the child.

The boy's mother - Ms Rosales' sister - believes Ms Rosales rolled on Eliseo and killed him, while her lawyer says her arms are too big to have moved enough to kill him.

Jamie Rosales is charged with injury to a child for leaving her son in the care of his aunt.

A lawyer for Jamie Rosales said she believed the death was possibly caused by the morbidly obese woman rolling onto the toddler.

“She doesn’t believe her sister intentionally did anything to her child."
