Coincidence? Socialist Countries Facing Blackouts

President Hugo Chávez has been facing a public outcry in recent weeks over power failures that, after six nationwide blackouts in the last two years, are cutting electricity for hours each day in rural areas and in industrial cities like Valencia and Ciudad Guayana. Now, water rationing has been introduced here in the capital.

The deterioration of services is perplexing to many here, especially because the country had grown used to cheap, plentiful electricity and water in recent decades. But even as the oil boom was enriching his government and Mr. Chávez asserted greater control over utilities and other industries in this decade, public services seemed only to decay, adding to residents’ frustrations.

Other countries in the region, including Brazil and Chile, have also expressed concern.

The BBC's Jeremy McDermott, in Colombia, says Colombia is increasingly isolated in the region, but does not seem to care, just so long as it has US support.

President Uribe's deal with the US has caused concern in the region

Colombian opposition groups have reacted angrily after details of a controversial military deal with the US were made public.

Under the 10-year deal, the US military will not only have access to military bases, but also be able to use major international civilian airports.

US personnel and defence contractors will also enjoy diplomatic immunity.

President Alvaro Uribe says the agreement will help rid Colombia of drugs gangs and left-wing rebel groups.

But leading opposition senator Gustavo Petro, of the left-wing PDA party, said the deal amounted to a virtual US occupation of Colombia.

They reveal that the US military will have access to seven Colombian army, navy and air force bases and also be able to use civilian airports under conditions that have still not been made clear.

The deal has led to a worsening of already strained ties between Colombia and Venezuela.

Zelaya, a leftist logging magnate, was rousted at dawn by soldiers and flown to exile on a Supreme Court order, after he irked many in Honduras by cozying up to socialist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and allegedly seeking support to allow presidential re-election, something he denies.

In Islamabad, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who sent the U.S. delegation this week, praised the deal, calling it "a big step forward" for democracy in the Americas.

Venezuela is no tyranny

Dictatorship has returned to Latin America in Honduras, not in the genuine, if imperfect, democracy of Venezuela

Venezuela is far from the "dictatorship which has a facade of democracy" described by General Raúl Baduel, who has been accused of corruption. What kind of tyranny oversees a 70% increase of participation in presidential elections, as Chávez has, or the government holding 13 free and fair elections in 10 years?

What cannot be said of Venezuela is that the right to protest is threatened. This year alone, the opposition have staged dozens of marches free from state harassment. On numerous occasions opponents and marchers have been invited to address the nation from the National Assembly.

Respect for democracy is intrinsic to the particular model being followed by the Chávez government.

Maybe in Honduras we have a serious glimpse of what "democracy" would have been like in Venezuela had its violent attempts to overthrow Chávez been successful?

Leftist Latin American leaders have agreed on using a new intra- regional trading currency, dubbed as Sucre, instead of the US dollar.

Why be afraid to go on FOX and, if they are wrong about you, set them straight? It seems like if you had real faith in your agenda, and if conservatives' notions of what you're up to are way off base, you'd be confident to go look people in the eye and calmly tell them where they are wrong about you, why they are wrong about your extremist associates and appointments, and clear up the issues. You could explain that your advisors aren't students of Mao, Marx, Alinsky and that you understand America is not where we forcibly "redistribute the wealth" for it's own sake.

I want to ask if you are watching MSNBC this morning. Well, I'll tell you : What they are doing over there is surely not the news. It is an anchor woman going from Obama policy to Obama policy and arguing in support of it. This is not the news.
As a viewer of all the different channels, I am aware of the "flavor" of each of them. I am also clearly aware that you guys are only disparaging the ONE that doesn't actually actively promote YOUR agenda. The evenings are filled with opinion talk noise Fox=right, MSNBC=left. So, in terms of equality they cancel each other out. Add CNN to the moderate-left and you have FOX alone on one side. (Actually Gretta is center,factual. MSNBC's whole p.m. is hard left)

This is not opinion. I am informing you of reality. Your Chavez-lite attempts to insert yourself, and attempt to promote suppression of opinion and disparage the ideas of half of America is something America doesn't appreciate in it's leaders.

According to the Fox News Channel, the White House is purposely avoiding the network’s Sunday news show because it’s “opinion journalism masquerading as news”. Not at all like the networks that get tingles in their collective leg when the President’s name is mentioned. Apparently, they don’t like to be fact-checked;

The White House stopped providing guests to ‘Fox News Sunday’ after Wallace fact-checked controversial assertions made by Tammy Duckworth, assistant secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, in August. Dunn said fact-checking an administration official was “something I’ve never seen a Sunday show do.”

Maybe that’s why Fox has a growing audience these days - because the other news shows don’t bother to investigate beyond the talking points issued by the White House.

Can you imagine the furor if the Bush White House had treated the President’s critics this way? This is more of the tactics they’ve borrowed from Hugo Chavez - it’s certainly not American.

A luxurious way of life for wealthy Venezuelan golfers is under threat, with President Hugo Chavez deriding the game as lazy, bourgeois and the antithesis of his Bolivarian Revolution.

Chavez launched his attack on the sport on his weekly TV show, "Hello Mr. President," branding players selfish elitists who annexed acres of prime land while the poor suffered in slums.

"Golf is a bourgeois sport," he spat, citing the use of golf carts as evidence of the laziness of the "little Yankees."

Officials have moved to seize two of Venezuela's prime courses, at Caraballeda and Maracay. However, the move has divided Chavez's local supporters, with many warning of a detrimental impact on surrounding communities.

Gian Carlos Perez, the manager of the Caraballeda course, said the club had the support of the area's communal councils — set up by Chavez.

CARACAS (Dow Jones)--Venezuela moved to seize the Hilton resort on the Caribbean island of Margarita, a swanky beach-side hotel which recently housed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe.

During the summit, Chavez joked that the government could nationalize the hotel. A few years ago, the government seized a Hilton in Caracas, which it rebranded Hotel Alba. Since then, the hotel has become a meeting point for Chavez sympathizers from around the globe.

The Hilton-managed resort is the latest target in a long list of nationalizations. During a decade in power, Chavez has expanded the role of the state by seizing oil companies, coffee-roasters, a bank, food processors, telecoms, utilities, a steel-mill and cement makers.

Ingredients

* 1-1 1/2 lb cubed beef stew meat
* 1/2 cup flour
* 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
* 1/2 teaspoon pepper
* 1/4 cup vegetable oil
* 1 onion, chopped fine
* 1 carrot, chopped fine
* 1/4 cup finely chopped celery, with a few minced leaves
* 1 tablespoon dried parsley
* 1 pinch thyme
* 3 1/2 cups beef broth
* 2 medium potatoes, diced
* 2 carrots, diced
* 2 onions, diced

Directions

1. Put flour, salt and pepper in a large ziploc bag.
2. Heat oil over medium heat in a large dutch oven.
3. Place meat in bag with the flour and shake until well coated.
4. Shake off meat pieces and add them to the oil and stir until slightly browned, Add remaining flour from the bag and the finely chopped onion.
5. Stir until well browned.
6. Add finely chopped carrot and next 4 ingredients.

Faced by Mr. Zelaya's attempted usurpations, the institutions of Honduran democracy performed as designed, and as our own Founding Fathers would have hoped.

Hondurans are therefore left scratching their heads. They know why Hugo Chávez, Daniel Ortega and the Castro brothers oppose free elections and the removal of would-be dictators, but they can't understand why the Obama administration does.

In the last three months, much has been made of a supposed military "coup" that whisked former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya from power and the supposed chaos it has created.

There is, however, chaos to spare in the Obama administration's policy toward our poor and loyal allies in Honduras.

That policy was set in a snap decision the day Mr. Zelaya was removed from office, without a full assessment of either the facts or reliable legal analysis of the constitutional provisions at issue. Three months later, it remains in force, despite mounting evidence of its moral and legal incoherence.

In a day packed with meetings, we met only one person in Honduras who opposed Mr. Zelaya's ouster, who wishes his return, and who mystifyingly rejects the legitimacy of the November elections: U.S. Ambassador Hugo Llorens.
