Ezra Klein sat down with an insurance industry CEO to try and better understand what’s going on with our health care system. The most interesting part of the conversation (to hear him tell it) was seeing charts that actually assign costs—in dollars—to different units of care (like pills, doctor visits, and lab tests), and then compare those costs to the same units in different countries. He describes the United States column in all the bar charts like “a New York skyscraper that got lost in downtown Des Moines” in comparison to all the other countries. And, looking at the charts, it’s hard not to agree. The takeaway: our health care costs more because we let insurance companies and care providers charge more. In other countries, governments set the rates for different treatments and drugs.

Here’s a part of health care reform we don’t hear enough of - the cost of care.

There is a simple explanation for why American health care costs so much more than health care in any other country: because we pay so much more for each unit of care. As Halvorson explained, and academics and consultancies have repeatedly confirmed, if you leave everything else the same — the volume of procedures, the days we spend in the hospital, the number of surgeries we need — but plug in the prices Canadians pay, our health-care spending falls by about 50 percent.

The biggest developer of wind farms is still NextEra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of Florida Power & Light, but the Spanish firm Iberdrola is second. Foreign companies riddle the rest of the top ten. (Fascinating charts showing market share can be found on pages 14 and 15 of the American Wind Energy Association’s 2008 annual report.) Since the economic crisis of last fall, U.S. companies have pulled back their investment and foreign companies have charged ahead.

Most interestingly, we found that the program, which is designed to reimburse companies for 30 percent of the cost of building a renewable energy facility, has given out $1.05 billion since Sept. 1. Almost all of it (91 percent) has gone to 11 wind farms (a mix of solar, geothermal and biomass projects collected the rest).

Discussion topics include approaches to microscopic hematuria, erectile dysfunction and elevated serum Prostate Specific Antigen.

Asymptomatic microscopic hematuria is a common observation in the family doctor's practice. Microscopic hematuria is defined as 2 well collected urine samples with more than 3 red blood cells per high power field. Management of microscopic hematuria is summarized in the following 2 charts.

After years and years of a housing bubble, we have millions of Americans trained in some capacity relating to housing, and those skills are no longer needed. Concepts like this should shred anyone's notion of an output gap. Sure, American hands are underutilized, but if those hands don't have anything to do that's productive, can they really be considered unused "capacity." No, they can't.

And this is the problem with big, macro-thinking. You can point to two GDP trendlines and say "Look, undercapacity..." but that totally ignores the ground level where real employees have to find jobs that they're suited for, and no amount of expansionary practice can change that problem.

Here's a little paradox for you. Even with unemployment officially sitting around 10%, studies continue to suggest that America is deficient when it comes to having a skilled workforce.

A new survey by the Business Roundtable finds that many businesses say they can't get as skilled-enough workforce for what they need. Remember, we're in the middle of period where there's a record number of jobseekers for every listing.
