Kids think Hitler was a football coach

One in 20 British schoolchildren thinks Adolf Hitler was a German football manager, according to a new survey.

One in six youngsters believed Auschwitz was a theme park - and one in 12 thought the Blitz was a European clean-up operation following World War II.

The embarrassing findings are contained in a poll for the veterans' charity Erskine, which asked 2,000 kids aged nine to 11 about the two world wars.

One in four said they did not think about soldiers who died then, and 40% had no idea when Remembrance Day is.

Erskine chief executive Major Jim Panton said: "Some answers to this poll have shocked us and show we have a part to play, not just in caring for veterans but in educating society.

"Children are the future of the country. It is important we help them learn about our history."

The Erskine charity, which provides nursing and medical care for veterans, will now take part in a national scheme to educate kids about the world wars.

They did this in both playoff and non-playoff cities - so it was really targeted toward the hard-core fan who just enjoys the sport.

When I was with Flying Dog Brewery, we had good success creating tweetups to build stronger awareness and relationships with our consumers. But the cool thing is that loyal consumer who would come to the event would almost always bring someone who was less familiar with the brand, so we got to talk to a partially new audience.

Big in-person attendance. More than 1200 people attended tweet-ups in 23 cities (including events in New Zealand and Northern Ireland) for the opening night of the playoffs. Many fans organized further tweet-ups as their teams progressed through the playoffs as well

Bigger online chatter. Those attendees talked a lot about the events on Twitter: On the opening night of the playoffs, the term "NHL" was mentioned on Twitter more than twice as often as on a normal day. And #NHLtweetup became a trending topic for the day.

Enormous total reach. According to the league's research, as many as 240,000 people could have heard about the event on Twitter. And the tweet-ups also generated press coverage that reached millions, including a story in USA Today.

Dozens of UN peacekeepers punished for abuses

The United Nations says at least 50 peacekeepers have been punished by national authorities in the last three years for committing sexual abuses while on UN missions.

The data, released Thursday, comes after repeated requests from media for the punishments meted out to peacekeepers accused of rape and other abuses in conflict areas such as Congo, Haiti, Sudan and Ivory Coast.

The UN said the punishments ranged from reduction in military rank to eight months imprisonment.

No data on the nationalities or identities of the peacekeepers were revealed.

The UK arm of the human rights charity Save the Children released a report in 2008 that found more than 50 per cent of 250 boys and girls living in towns in Haiti, Sudan and the Ivory Coast said they knew of at least one incident of coerced sex and sexual touching involving boys and girls in their communities.

Uproar over court crucifix ruling

The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that crucifixes should be removed from Italian classrooms, prompting Vatican anger and sparking uproar in Italy, where such icons are embedded in the national psyche.

"The ruling of the European court was received in the Vatican with shock and sadness," said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi, adding that it was "wrong and myopic" to try to exclude a symbol of charity from education.

The ruling by the court in Strasbourg, which Italy said it would appeal, said crucifixes on school walls -- a common sight that is part of every Italian's life -- could disturb children who were not Christians.

Italy has been in the throes of national debate on how to deal with a growing population of immigrants, mostly Muslims, and the court sentence is likely to become another battle cry for the center-right government's policy to restrict newcomers.
