Mata Amritanandamayi, an Indian woman known as Amma, is as canon-worthy as anyone we've ever heard of. For over 30 years, Amma has been traveling the globe, giving hugs to everyone she meets, asking nothing in return. Though she considers herself spiritual, she does not advocate any particular religion – her message is love, pure and simple.

So why does she do it? As Amma told BBC News, "Love is a very special, very uplifting vibration. That's what I'm trying to give people. It's like visiting a perfume factory. Consciously or unconsciously you will carry that fragrance around with you."

In each city she visits, Amma doles out hugs all day long, often until as late as two or three in the morning, until everyone's gotten a turn.

she is the founder of a charity called Mata Amritanandamayi Math. Many of her followers contribute money to the organization in appreciation of Amma's hugs.

Nintendo fighting breast cancer with limited edition Pink Ribbon DS Lite

While we normally hear about new DS Lite SKUs fairly far in advance, Amazon sneaked a new version of Nintendo's money-printing handheld onto their virtual shelves today -- a Polar White console adorned with the universal logo for breast cancer awareness, a pink ribbon. The handheld retails for the standard price of $129.99, though Nintendo has agreed to donate $5 from every purchase to a cancer research charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, promising a minimum donation of $100,000. Sure, it may not be the most stylish DS Lite model to date -- but it's certainly the most altruistic.

It's a basic political-science axiom that citizens are less likely to revolt if they feel they determined who gets to look down Arianna Huffington's blouse at political soirees.

So feel free not to vote. Just remember, if so many groups' main objective really were to strengthen democracy, America would have gotten rid of the electoral college by now.

Interesting opinion! ... I feel very strongly that everyone should always vote, but should we? Is not voting at all, better than voting for the lesser of two evils?

When it comes to helping the needy, Brooks writes: "For too long, liberals have been claiming they are the most virtuous members of American society. Although they usually give less to charity, they have nevertheless lambasted conservatives for their callousness in the face of social injustice."

WASHINGTON: Democrat Barack Obama, fighting off new character attacks from his Republican opponent, said on Sunday that John McCain behaved erratically as American financial structures teetered under the mounting burden of bad debt.

Palin's comments dredged up Obama's association with a former 1960s radical, William Ayers, a founders of the Weather Underground. Its members took credit for bombings, including nonfatal explosions at the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol during the Vietnam War era. Obama was a child when the group was active and has denounced Ayers' radical views and activities.

Obama and Ayers live in the same Chicago neighborhood, served on a charity board together and had a fleeting political connection, but there is no evidence that they ever palled around. And it is not true they were associated while Ayers was committing terrorist acts.

Cannabis is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, according to a report by a British research charity Thursday, which called for a "serious rethink" of drug policy.

The Beckley Foundation, a charity which numbers senior British and other academics among its advisors, said banning cannabis has no impact on supply and turns users into criminals.

"Although cannabis can have a negative impact on health, including mental health, in terms of relative harms it is considerably less harmful than alcohol or tobacco," says the report by the Foundation's Global Cannabis Commission.

The Beckley Foundation, a charitable trust, claimed only two deaths worldwide have been attributed to cannabis, while alcohol and tobacco use together kill an estimated 150,000 people in Britain alone.

Many of the harms associated with cannabis use are the result of prohibition itself, particularly the social harms arising from arrest and imprisonment," it said.
