But the equations suggest that some weird stuff could be just around the corner — maybe "dark matter," the invisible stuff that seems to hang around galaxies.

"It's kind of an embarrassment that we don't know what 95 percent of the universe is made of by weight," Green says. "We hope — it's possible — we may be making dark matter."

Some theories say it is possible the collider will cause miniature black holes to momentarily appear.

But for now, what has appeared is a table of croissants, an urn of coffee, and more people. Everyone stands around in blue hard hats. They don't talk about black holes or dark matter. A few say things like "I hope the magnet doesn't fall."

Clip Source: www.npr.org

The World's Largest Particle Accelerator

The work is all part of an $8 billion project at the international physics laboratory called CERN. At its heart will be an enormously powerful particle accelerator capable of smashing subatomic particles together, reproducing the energies that existed a fraction of a second after the big bang. What comes out may solve some fundamental mysteries about how the universe is put together.

But that's if everything works. Physicists hope to begin operation this fall of what is arguably the largest and most complex science experiment ever constructed.

Tags: particle accelerator, physics, black hole, universe, big bang, dark matter

<clipSource>http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9473392</clipSource>

The Planet's Most Massively Awesome Computer to Go Live September 10th

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: There is a chunk that wouldn't clip, but is interesting. CERN1 has today announced that the first attempt to circulate a beam in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be made on 10 September. Television coverage of the start-up will be made available through Eurovision.

The CERN Control Centre, from where the LHC will be operated.

Starting up such a machine is not as simple as flipping a switch. Commissioning is a long process that starts with the cooling down of each of the machine’s eight sectors. This is followed by the electrical testing of the 1600 superconducting magnets and their individual powering to nominal operating current. These steps are followed by the powering together of all the circuits of each sector, and then of the eight independent sectors in unison in order to operate as a single machine.

Tags: cern, lhc, timeline

<clipSource>http://press.web.cern.ch/press/PressReleases/Releases2008/PR06.08E.html</clipSource>

CERN announces start-up date for LHC

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: Getting closer.

Clip Source: press.web.cern.ch

The CERN Control Center, from where the LHC will be operated.

Geneva, 7 August 2008.
